Trump made a unilateral decision to pull out of WHO. But we joined WHO in 1948 by an act of Congress. Trump needs Congress' approval to withdraw. His decision is too catastrophic to be made without Congress and the courts. As director of a WHO Center, I am considering a lawsuit.

Dr Oz is unfit to run CMS. He peddles conspiracy theories on vaccines & fake cures. He profits from fringe medical ideas. By nominating RFK Jr & Mehmet Oz, Trump is giving his middle finger to science. Having worked for 40 years in public health, it's utterly disheartening

CDC is in trouble on 2 fronts * CDC's "hard" powers are narrowing: Voiding of CDC's mask mandate was the latest in a line of cases w/ a strained & narrow view of its powers * CDC's "soft" power is vanishing: Loss of public trust & refusal to abide by its scientific guidance

CDC is betting that by giving wide freedom to vaccinated people it’ll encourage the hesitant. But there’s no behavioral evidence for that. What’s more likely to happen is that both vaccinated AND unvaccinated people will take off their masks. That’s not good for public health

The idea of #COVID19 herd immunity won't go away. Let's be clear. Herd immunity is a term used to achieve high vaccination rates. It's not an acceptable ph strategy to place people at risk of serious disease or death by exposing them to a novel virus.

Think mandates don’t work? When @CDCgov transit mandate was in place, almost everyone masked up. Now it’s rare to see a mask at airports. That’s why we’ve drafted an amicus to support CDC & DOJ, signed by >200 leaders including 5 former CDC directors. CDC must have strong powers

Facts on US role in @WHO * US never left WHO @JoeBiden will tell UN he's rescinding 1 yr w/drawal notice * Biden will release all funds owed to WHO * US will join #COVAX, joining 172 countries * Fauci is a staunch internationalist We're rejoining the community of nations!

The @WHO EC voted 8-6 against declaring a #monkeypox PHEIC. Legally, @DrTedros is not bound by their recommendation. For the first time ever, he declared an emergency against EC advice. That’s politically courageous & I applaud his historic decision

I rarely disagree with my dear friend Tony Fauci but think it’s overly optimistic to predict a #COVID19 vaccine by January. Even if we don’t skip vital tests of safety/efficacy there won’t be nearly enough doses for US population let alone globally.

Biden’s #Omicron plan is much of the same: masks on airplanes; plead for more shots & boosters; tests. There’s no vaccine passports or new mandates. His plan isn’t bold & doesn’t meet the moment. Maybe the US is simply ungovernable in a public health crisis.

CIA shifts assessment on Covid origins, saying lab leak likely caused outbreak. This defies credibility b/c the only factual change is a new president. That's politics, not science. Also note, it has "low confidence" in its evaluation. And there isn't a shred of evidence given.

New #maskoff guidance is one of CDC’s most serious errors in my memory. Yes, vaccinated individuals are safe w/o masks. But @CDCgov is a public health agency. It should have foreseen the impact on public behavior. #MasksOff will put 60% of the pop at risk. That’s not good ph

If the Moderna data does show vaccine effectiveness for under 5 year olds, why wouldn’t FDA grant an EUA. That’s the legal standard. It’s decidedly not FDA’s job to guess what might confuse parents. It’s insulting to parents who want their child to be protected against Covid-19
