One stat you won’t find in your Spotify Wrapped is how much artists are paid for all that listening on the platform.
The max possible in 2023 is $0.003 per stream. And in 2024, Spotify will stop paying anything AT ALL for 2/3 of the tracks on the platform.
As of April 1st, Spotify has demonetized any track on the platform that receives less than 1000 streams per year. That’s an estimated 86% of tracks on the platform. This new policy will impact small artists the most — the same artists that Spotify claims to support.

Spotify is trying to classify working musicians who aren’t benefiting from their streaming model as “amateurs.” Whether you’re an underpaid working professional or just getting started, all musicians deserve to be paid fairly for streaming.

The music industry is in crisis. It’s incredibly difficult to be a financially stable musician, even for those selling out tours or with millions of streams. All the industry money is flowing to a few giant corporations. We need to organize for major change & our fair share!
BREAKING: Austin Parks and Rec Board unanimously passes a recommendation that @sxsw be required to pay fair rates to musicians. This is a massive victory and a huge step.
