Emmy Nominations for 2006

Wow.

What a year for the Emmys! I swear, I could not be more surprised at the nominations this year . . .

First up, 24 has kicked some major ass with nominees for best drama, supporting actor and actress (for Gregory Itzin and Jean Smart, respectively), and of course, five million technical awards and the Old Standby, Kiefer. All well-deserved.

But then there's the lack of noms for Desperate Housewives (not surprising), and all the other winners from last year -- Patricia Arquette, James Spader and most oddly, LOST. Granted, they did get a ton of technical nods, and a very well-deserved nomination for guest actor Henry Ian Cusick (aka Desmond -- though, I do think I enjoyed the Henry Gale character a little more.) But to be knocked out of the best drama race by the popular, but wretchedly executed Grey's Anatomy? Sacrilegious.

Instead of nominating the winners from last year, Emmy pulled a 180 and nominated *gasp* . . . NEW PEOPLE. I'm talking Jaime Pressly (My Name is Earl), Kevin James (King of Queens), Bryan Cranston (Malcolm in the Middle), Steve Carell (The Office), and Will Arnett (Arrested Development)! Yes, YES, YESSSS! I have long had these people pegged as the best comedic actors on TV, whether it be for eight seasons or one . . . I just never thought that the Emmy voters would agree. (Now could we get a little love for John C. McGinley on Scrubs? Hmmmm???)

And I have to say that the Best Comedy category is the best I've seen it in years. Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office, Arrested Development and Scrubs were all nominated, and any of them would deserve to win. But instead of the more deserving My Name Is Earl (which has all but patented the format "Comedy with a Message You'll WANT to Watch"), the fifth spot went to the blander-by-the-minute Two and a Half Men. If the voters felt it necessary to throw in one "traditional" sitcom, they could have at least gone with the far better written How I Met Your Mother, or even The New Adventures of Old Christine.

I also hope that next year The CW will have enough clout to get Everybody Hates Chris or Veronica Mars some attention. But that is truly wishful thinking on my part.

And the best nominations by far? Patrick Stewart and Kate Winslet as guests on HBO's Extras. Nothing beats the best of England's theatre actors doing dick and fart jokes with Ricky Gervais. Nothing.

Emmy Winner James Spader

It seems odd that my two favorite hot older men were up against each other for an Emmy last night . . . and I didn't even realize it until this past weekend.

I know I said that Keifer deserved an Emmy solely based on the last five minutes of this season of 24 -- the crying jag to end all crying jags -- but when it came down to casting my own imaginary ballot, I was all for the Spader. (Though it was really nice to see the clip of crying Keifer in the "special moments of this year" montage, I will admit.)

I mean, c'mon . . . Spader reinvented a failed show in its final season and essentially gift wrapped guest star Emmys for two of SAGs (in my opinion) cheesiest actors: William Shatner and Sharon Stone. And he conveyed just enough lovable pervertedness to gain not only his own spin-off, but the adoration of even the most conservative Americans. (Read: my mother)

Not many could pull this off with such panache, and then deliver such an appropriately quirky acceptance speech.

And so, I salute you, James Spader. May your spin-off series run long and not start to suck after 3-4 years like most David E. Kelley shows.

Oh and PS: Please please please wear your hot-assed glasses more often.

Addressing the Obvious

For awhile now I've avoided posting here. (No, lists and dirty stories do not count.) LJ has me a little jaded . . . it seems everybody feels the need to spout off on how they feel about this war, not as a means of keeping a record of this important moment for history or posterity . . . but in order to convince every other person on LJ and throughout the world how their opinions are wrong in comparison.

If I see one more entry written solely to create drama between the pro- and the anti-, I swear I might snap and yank my internet connection out of the wall. Scrolling down, it's biased argument against biased argument, complete with home-made icons alternatingly supporting and disparaging the war efforts.

I only hope that what I am about to say doesn't come as a shock to you, but . . . you are both wrong, and you are both right. Just as no one individual is wholly good or bad, the government policies in debate here have aspects that are corrupt as well as qualities that strive to do right.

By all means, you have the privilege (in America especially) to speak your minds . . . but please, for the love of peace and logic, take a step back and consider the other side's points before launching an attack from the often defensive heart.

It's bad enough people are made to die over this conflict, but to create division and hatred in our own communities is something that may not ever be undone.

I do not expect people to agree with one another by any means . . . but I do wish that we would at least learn to respect our differences of opinion. They are, after all, what makes us uniquely human.

That said, we now return you to your regularly scheduled propaganda.

Safety Precautions Galore

For those of you who haven't noticed . . . I've been finagling around with my friends list a bit, and all those who want to read my blather have been "friended".

It's recently come to my attention that one of my cousins has a DeadJournal, and while that may not be a big deal to some . . . it's still too close for comfort for me. It was bound to happen sooner or later . . . I'm going "friends-only".

So, we're beefing up on security. I really don't know how I feel about this, as I always loved the great random non-LJers who stop by and comment . . . and I don't want to cut out a core audience I may not know I have. But perhaps this little added trust will allow me to write more freely and honestly . . . as I won't worry so much about people stumbling in on my criticism.

Not that I really cared before, but I recognize I have been a little less candid recently.

So, if there are any users out there who want to be added, please let me know. And if there are any dedicated non-users . . . well, we'll work something out.
