fic - two chances : 12

Thus concludes the Two Chances collection. Thanks for reading!

Two Chances : 12

They'd all been invited to a Maguanac wedding. The ceremony had been short but meaningful, the banquet more properly labeled a feast, but now it had carried on into the latter part of the festivities, which seemed more appropriate for a cozier group, and they'd each excused themselves. Heero and Duo separately found themselves on one of the venue's balconies to watch the moon rise.

Duo eventually broke their companionable silence. "Ever wonder if we..."

"Hm?"

"...squandered our chance? I mean, we were probably too young for that. Or immature. Or, I dunno..."

"Still trying to figure ourselves out?"

"Yeah! That." Duo exhaled loudly, thinking back to those early days. "It was hard enough figuring ourselves out, it was probably gonna be impossible for us to figure each other out at the same time."

Heero's answering silence signalled agreement. "Well," he said eventually. "At least it ended while we could still be friends. Right?"

"Right. And I'm super glad I've gotten to know you as a friend instead. You're..." He paused, a lot of things coming to mind all at once. He settled on something that seemed like an appropriate summary. "I really value that."

"Hm," Heero said contemplatively. "I also value our relationship now. But..."

"...but?"

"...I don't know that I would say 'squandered'."

"Uh." Duo chewed his lip for a moment, trying to figure that one out. "Oh. Just wasn't meant to be?"

Heero shook his head slightly. "I mean... We took a go at it. And it didn't work out. But... things are different now. Who's to say it wouldn't work out if we tried it again?"

"If..." He mouthed the word near-silently, just trying to process the thought. "If we..." he tried again, this time with a little bit more sound. Alright, there, the idea finally came into focus. "If..." Oh, now some more details clarified themselves and he needed some more time to think about them.

Heero gave him a sidelong glance to gauge his reaction, then turned his visual attention away again.

"Have you ever wondered... about that?"

"I'm wondering now. Since you've brought it up. No, I don't think we lost our one and only opportunity to have that sort of relationship with each other. Yes, I think it would work out this time, if we tried it again. It'd be very different from what it was before, of course, but... that's the point, right?"

"Right...." he echoed automatically. He wasn't entirely certain what he was agreeing with. How was there suddenly a point to this? A wonderful, beautiful point. It all sounded kind of right, if he had to be honest with himself. He looked Heero over with a critical eye. "You've actually kind of gotten hotter, yanno? You were kinda all.. awkward limbs and stuff back then."

Heero raised an eyebrow at him. "Like you weren't a teenager, too?"

"And I do kinda like you even more than I did before."

Heero just went ahead and put a hand on top of his. He figured this would be a more effective test than any rambling on on the topic.

They both looked at those hands for a while, each thinking to himself, oh, see, that's not weird at all. They'd touched plenty of times over the years, of course, even gotten right into each other's personal space... but always in a reassuringly platonic way.

This... was barely even a blip outside the friend zone. But it was still somehow generating an attractive force that made Duo scootch right up to Heero so they were standing shoulder to shoulder.

"Hm," Heero observed mildly.

"Hm," Duo responded smugly, giving him the lightest of shoves. "This could work. Maybe," he had to hedge, never feeling quite confident about being optimistic.

"Maybe I'm just being curious," Heero admitted, showing just a hint of doubt.

Duo shrugged, somehow getting closer to Heero with the action. "I've done things for worse reasons."

Heero huffed a chuckle, rested his head briefly against Duo's. "There's no hurry, I suppose."

"Hm, no hurry at all."

The moon rose above them, noting to itself that they were building up quite a bit of momentum, for something they weren't in any hurry to do.

back to previous part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/188820.html.

fic - two chances : 11
Two Chances : 11

A squeaky noise sounded when he definitely wasn't expecting it. Heero glanced from the kitchen to the living room and found Duo crouched in front of the small basket of dog toys he kept in the corner of the room. Duo looked up, grinned when he saw Heero was watching, and squeezed the chew toy a few more times before putting it back and heading over to Heero's side. "Ever think about just adopting your own pup instead of borrowing Relena's all the time?"

"I'm not 'borrowing' Miles. I'm training him."

"Heero, love, that pup's about as trained as trained can be. Pretty sure it's all just about the puppy playtime now."

"Corgis are working dogs. They need --"

"You are a Preventer, a Gundam pilot, and an all-around general badass. Not the Royal Dogkeeper. In any case, forget my poor choice of words, then. Ever think about just... getting your own dog to train?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"I am a Preventer," he answered wryly. "I spend time with Miles when the opportunity presents itself, but I'm not in a position to offer full-time care and attention to a canine companion."

"You offer me your full-enough-time attention."

"You're potty trained."

"Okay, fair. Ever think about training Miles -- no, what I am saying, forget that. Relena's not in a position, either, otherwise I suspect you wouldn't be dogsitting for her so often. Okay, okay, you're not dogsitting. You're..."

"She has staff." He paused thoughtfully for a moment. "I also think Relena might get Miles a friend at some point."

"Like a dog friend?"

Heero eyed him oddly. "Yes."

"Like, another corgi, I wonder? Would it be a disgrace if he were caught slumming it with a former shelter doggo?"

"I would like to think I've taught him better than that."

Duo stared at him blankly. "You've been training him in DEI, too?"

"He's been trained to help those in need," Heero answered placidly. "Shelter animals are in need of a new home."

"And, uh..." Actually, it was probably better not to question the dog's ability to recognize that. "What if he perceived the new dog as a threat to Relena? Shelter animals aren't always known for the best manners."

"He should give them a chance to prove themselves, one way or another."

Duo sighed in defeat. "Well, he's certainly had a good teacher. You didn't chase me off because of my bad manners, either."

Heero kissed him on the cheek. "I, for one, celebrate our differences."

back to previous part

on to next part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/188611.html.

fic - two chances : 10
Two Chances : 10

"Hey, you've got a free minute, right? Can I get you to try out this game with me?" Duo waggled his cell phone.

Heero lifted an eyebrow at him, but held out his phone so Duo's could send over the necessary install. "Can't you play someone over the network?"

"Sure, but I don't want to matchmake with some rando. Especially since I don't know how to play yet. It'd be really embarassing to lose, yanno? Even if I have a valid reason for losing."

Heero was about to ask for more information, since he knew Duo didn't normally have such a fear, but then the game finished installing and booted up and he blinked at it for a few seconds. "Well. You could play as a Taurus or something, while you learned the controls. Then you wouldn't feel bad."

Duo grinned as he set about getting themselves into a match. "Oh, come on, you always say only losers blame their failures on their equipment. Besides, I have to imagine that, as a matter of good game design, they wouldn't have put such an obviously inferior machine up against Gundams without some way to balance its disadvantages. Like, maybe you get a hundred lives or something... Aha, here we go. Why, hello 'Scythe, ol' buddy. Not an entirely accurate portrait, but they did you justice." He looked over to Heero expectantly.

Heero was buttoning through the character options with a critical eye.

"Oh, come on, Heero, don't tell me you're not going to go with Wing?"

"I don't think the abilities assigned to each of these characters is really a meaningful reflection of --"

"Oh, come on, Heero."

He knew the experience would disappoint, but he supposed there really wasn't any other choice besides Wing. He locked in his selection and they went back to a brief load screen before their characters appeared in what seemed to be the sky over a generic military base.

"Ho hum," Duo muttered to himself as he fiddled with his controls. "How do I...? Oh, okay. You ready?"

Heero huffed softly before nodding, a small indication that yes he was ready to deal with this thing that obviously did not meet his standards.

They got started. "Oh, hey, nice soundtrack," Duo murmured, the music seeming to ramp up in intensity as they clashed. The battle was, perhaps, not quite as epic as the music made it out to be. There were plenty of misfires and fumbles on both sides, but Heero managed to stumble upon the button combination to trigger his ultimate first and won the battle.

"Hmm," Heero observed. "Not embarassing at all."

Duo snorted. While technically true, he wasn't about to just take that. "You just got lucky button mashing --" He stopped to chortle at the victory pose Wing just pulled. "Okay, that was embarrassing. For you."

Heero had a funny look on his face. Maybe it was agreement.

"Oho, look at this." The level had just reset for round two. Seemed he had another chance to win the day. "I gotta beat you so I can see my victory pose."

"Much as I don't want to see Wing dabbing again, you're going to have to earn it."

"Expected nothing else."

back to previous part

on to next part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/188343.html.

fic - two chances : 9
Two Chances : 9

Duo woke up lazily, a little unsure of the time. His body felt like it was a well-deserved morning but the ambient light was darker than he would have thought... Ah, after a moment, the sound of rain caught his attention and he remembered the storm that had been expected to roll in late last night.

He turned on his side to face the other side of the bed, but even before the action was complete, he sensed that the other side was vacant. With one corner of his mouth pulled down in disapproval, he cracked an eye open to confirm his lover's absence. With a soft huff to express himself, he slid a hand over and gauged the remaining warmth. Gone at least a little while, but not a long while.

He was going to have to teach Heero some manners. A morning like this was made for sleeping in with your lover. Or maybe not-sleeping in with your lover.

Well, lazing about wasn't going to be any fun now. He rolled out of bed, intent on giving Heero a chance to rectify his obvious mistake.

back to previous part

on to next part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/187974.html.
Two Chances : 8

J had ample warning before Dekim came into the lab, though there was not much to hide. They were always prepared for an unannounced visit from Dekim. These visits were really not as 'surprise' as Dekim thought they were.

He took advantage of his old age as an excuse to lever himself out of his chair in greeting, slowly enough that he didn't have to say much of anything before Dekim made his pronouncement.

"What's this I've heard about your little pet?"

The topic was what J had been expecting. He knew Dekim had his moles in the lab. They didn't have access to anything really juicy, of course, but this hadn't been something they could keep under wraps. "Circumstances in the field changed between the setting of the charges and the detonation."

"Hmpf." Dekim tapped the floor with his decorative cane as if he was making some sort of point. Probably the point was just that he was an irritable old man. That was often why J did it himself, honestly. "You spoke more highly of him than that."

"The boy has learned his lesson," he said mildly.

Dekim snorted. "'He'll do better next time'? Is that your only response?"

"Sometimes the best lessons are learnt the hard way. Failure has a steep price, worse than any punishment we might give him. He won't soon forget it."

"Punish him anyway," Dekim ordered flatly. "He needs to learn that we won't just let mistakes slide, no matter what else happens. Punish him, re-train him, and no more mistakes, or he's out. Make sure he understands that." And having said his piece, he turned with a small flourish of his cape and left.

J wished he could still derive satisfaction from a good roll of his eyes. The boy wasn't going anywhere. Dekim had been trying to replace him with his own pet candidates for years, but the boy's performance had been so conclusively superior to them all that even Dekim had a hard time making a case. The boy was taking this mistake hard, true, but J still had faith in him. He was the right person for the job.

Maybe the fact that he was taking this mistake hard was proof of that.

back to previous part

on to next part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/187677.html.
Two Chances : 7

"Um. So..."

"Don't feel obliged to make conversation with me."

"...Ouch."

Heero winced faintly and turned to his companion. "Sorry. I just meant, this isn't a double-date or anything, so... Wait. This isn't a double-date, right?"

Duo blinked for a moment. "Um, no?"

"I was very clear to Quatre that this would not be a double-date."

"Okay, not a double-date. Very clear to me, too."

Heero took a deep breath and let it out again. "Sorry. Again. Let me start over. Quatre invited me out. Of course, he would be attended by his boyfriend. That was fine by me. But it is my understanding that Trowa invited you to balance things out. I don't want to impose on you. He should not have felt that he had to do that. Especially given the last time..."

Duo chewed on his lip for a moment, sorting through his responses. "I wasn't sure you even remembered the last time."

He grimaced. "Honestly, I remember Quatre scolding me afterward, the most."

"Oh, uh, well, I didn't think it was so bad that it would have warranted a scolding..." Both conciliatory and true. Heero hadn't really spoken to him any more than necessary the last time, either. Duo thought maaaaybe the last time had been intended to be more double-datey, but certainly Trowa had learned his lesson. Or at least, Duo had made sure he remembered the lesson, when inviting him out this time. He, too, had been very clear that he was just riding wingman on this one.

Heero's lips twitched into another grimace. "It was less to do with you, and more to do with my... ahem, interrogation of Trowa."

Duo snorted. "Heh, Trowa remembers that part, too. Probably why he felt like he had to invite me along as backup. I think he despaired of Quatre ever seeing him again, after that night."

A corner of Heero's mouth moved, this time, in perhaps amusement? "Mission accomplished, then."

"Hm? But, they're still seeing each other."

Heero shook his head slightly. "I wasn't trying to break them up. I was just... testing Trowa's mettle."

"Huh. So... I guess Trowa passed the test, since they are still together?"

"For now," Heero answered serenely. It almost sounded simply provisional and not altogether omimous. Almost, mostly.

Duo chuckled. This wasn't the sort of guy he had imagined would be one of Quatre's best friends, but.... maybe he could see it. If he squinted. "Okay, so, then, just to be clear... There's no bad blood between us?"

Heero seemed faintly surprised by the thought. "No, not at all. My apologies if I gave you that impression."

"No offense, but I suspect that may be an apology you're pretty used to delivering."

Heero laughed quietly, which faintly surprised Duo in turn. "True, I may often give that impression to people... But I don't often apologize for it."

Duo found himself smiling. "Ah, well, I'm honored."

back to previous part

on to next part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/187625.html.
Two Chances : 6

Duo sauntered up to the guy he'd been talking to more than an hour ago. "Hey. She finally let you go?"

Heero raised an eyebrow, unsure of whether it was for the implication of criticism of her, or the implication that he'd been observing for quite some time. "There was a lecture that had to run its course. Sorry to keep you waiting."

"A lecture? On New Year's Eve?"

"I don't run into her that often. I guess she had to take the opportunity."

"You don't run into her that often... and you still managed to earn yourself a lecture?"

"I'm a bad influence on her brother," he said wryly.

"That was... That wasn't one of Quatre's sisters, was it?"

"Trowa's sister."

"Ah, I don't think we've met."

"And... Quatre's done with you?" To be honest, maybe he'd been observing Duo for a bit over Catherine's shoulder, too, and maybe he was already fairly sure what the answer would be.

"Yes! It took me a while to extract myself, and then I came back to look for you, only to see you'd gotten waylaid, too. I was afraid I wouldn't get another chance to talk with you all night."

"Thank you for your patience, I suppose."

"Do you know what Quatre called me over for? He wanted to introduce me to someone, one of his sister's friends. Can you believe that? There I was, in the middle of flirting with you, and Quatre interrupts me to try to hook me up. Awkward."

"Flirting? Is that what that was?" He had thought it was just good chemistry, but maybe that was a potato / potahto sort of thing.

"I was working my way up to it. I was just building some good momentum when we got interrupted. Now I gotta start all over."

"Not so sure about that. That you have to start all over," Heero clarified when he saw Duo's puzzled frown. "We had just met. I don't think we have to meet again, this time."

"True! Meeting's the hard part, sometimes, in this big world of ours."

"So. Maybe we can just pick up where we left off."

Duo smiled charmingly at him. "Already started."

The fizz of their chemistry made a small smile bubble up in response. "So you have."

back to previous part

on to next part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/187221.html.

fic - two chances : 5
Two Chances : 5

They left the amusement park before the evening fireworks show, neither of them particularly inclined toward explosive ordnance going off overhead as entertainment, so they were able to exit in relative peace.

"So..." Heero started. He paused only a moment, wondering if there was a certain tentativeness in his voice. The moment passed. "Overall, good?"

Duo grinned at him. "Of course! I'm glad we came. You?"

A few nitpicks rose quickly to mind, but Heero suppressed them and nodded. "Crowded," he mentioned, needing to add something. He tried to keep his tone more observational than critical.

"Yeah, about what I was expecting, I guess. Can you imagine coming here at peak season?"

"That's why we didn't."

"Yeah, why we also..." Duo shifted the large bag of plushies on his back. "I have this weird feeling that we didn't do this the way we were supposed to."

"Is there a way we were supposed to?"

"Well... we barely went on any of the rides."

"If the lines hadn't been so atrocious, maybe we would have."

"Not that I didn't have a ton of fun winning all of these toys." Half the fun had just been the recon, scoping out all of the games and evaluating strategies and odds and cost-benefit until they mission-planned their way to success.

Heero gave the large sack on his own back a tug, gauging the mass of the plush therein. "For the children," he intoned solemnly.

"For the children," Duo repeated piously. They'd even gone out of their way not to trade in the smaller wins for the larger toys, so there would be more to donate to the holiday toy drives.

"Maybe..." Heero detected that note that may have been tentativeness again. "We can do this again some time. Get another chance at those rides."

"Heero, my dear." Duo snuck his hand into Heero's. He, too, may have evinced a bit of shyness with the action. "I had a wonderful time, but I can have a wonderful time with you doing practically anything. We are not spending that much money again, just to spend that many hours standing in lines."

Heero snorted. "Honestly, I agree. With the money part, and the line part. ... And the you part." He squeezed Duo's hand.

Duo bumped their shoulders together as they strolled toward the parking lot. "It was a special occasion, though, so once was fine."

"Go for a hike next time, maybe?"

"I am one hundred percent down with that."

back to previous part

on to next part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/187062.html.

fic - two chances : 4
Two Chances : 4

He wakes. Or at least, he thinks he wakes. There's something out of the ordinary about his waking. He thinks about it, and realizes that the thinking about it is the part that is out of the ordinary. He's pretty sure he's the kind of person that just wakes up and is ready to go.

Having realized that, he's pretty certain he's awake now. He thinks about opening his eyes, takes a breath to ready himself for sitting up, and figures out why he is feeling so disconnected from his body right now. Those are definitely bandages wrapped around his torso. Quite snugly done, he thinks, but not professional grade.

He hasn't a clue what his injuries are. His entire body is a blurry mess of aches and pains. He twitches his toes, and then his fingers, and that seems to work out alright, so there can't be anything too catastrophic. And his brain?

The thing that dominates his most recent memory is the explosion, a concussive force that left him feeling crushed from all sides even as he went flying free through the air. He prods his memory a bit more and finds a second impact, or perhaps a series of them. The sequence is more drawn out than the first. Hitting the ground, he suspects. He must not have faded to black immediately, because he remembers thinking, 'fuck, that hurt', but also thinking that it was fine, because it would be the last time, and there had been a certain comfort to that.

He doesn't know why he's still alive. He suspects the universe is saying, 'Fuck you, you don't get to die yet.'

He takes another breath to sigh, and grimaces at the bandages binding his ribs. Well, if the universe wants him to take another crack at it, he doesn't suppose he has much of a choice. Hopefully the universe isn't annoyed enough at him to have started his second act in OZ custody. He tunes out the clamor of his body and listens. No hum of any machines near him. No buzz of institutional lighting. No, not a hospital. He can't quite place it, though. He takes a breath, carefully this time... Does he smell food?

His first order of business is probably just getting upright, but after that? Well, first things first. He forces his eyes to open.

back to previous part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/186779.html.
Two Chances : 3

"Ah, good, you're back. Mika postponed the debrief till four o'clock, though."

"Hm."

Duo hardly expected Heero to hang on his every word, but he put that sound of acknowledgement at 'slightly distracted'. "Everything alright with Hook?"

"Hm? Yes, of course. He'll probably be back to full duty in a month or so."

"Oh. Took you longer than I thought it would, to check up on him."

Heero seated himself at his desk, and turned his chair toward Duo rather than waking his workstation up. "Conversation... took an unexpectedly grim turn."

Duo put on an appropriately attentive expression and waited for him to continue.

"He thanked me for not leaving him behind. Which... honestly took me a minute to figure out because... why would I have left him behind? Granted, his injury would have put him at a severe disadvantage, had any of the gunrunner's allies circled around to take him, but on its own, it wouldn't have been serious with proper treatment."

"His first injury in the field, I'm guessing?"

Heero tilted his head in acknowledgment. "I'll allow for a certain amount of inexperience to increase his anxiety. It was still puzzling that he thought I would leave him behind. Have I done anything lately that would warrant a lone wolf reputation?"

Duo opened his mouth to immediately deny it, but then he had to stop and consider things from the point of view of people that were not so familiar with him. "Hmmm... you jumped out that window a couple of months ago?"

It took Heero a few seconds to place the incident. Such things did not particularly stand out in his daily life. "That was not a lone wolf action. That was a flanking maneuver."

"Mm, yeah, I don't think Bartlett saw it that way at the time."

"And there was a fire escape."

"Hm, yep, pretty sure he didn't know that at the time."

Heero's little glare seemed to indicate that he did not hold himself responsible for the miscomprehension of others. "Even so. There's a world of difference between running off on your own, and running off to leave someone to die."

"Well, you know, I'm pretty sure Hook thinks you're a badass. Well, I mean, obviously you are a badass, but like, mythical status."

Heero raised an eyebrow, prompting for clarification.

"And, some people equate that sort of behavior with that sort of mythical status. So badass, you'd do anything to get the job done."

"The mythical badass sounds like a dick."

Duo chuckled in agreement. "A real badass doesn't need to pull dick moves to get the job done, eh?"

Heero rolled his eyes just a little. "I guess that must have been it... In any case, I ended up in an unplanned discussion on the factors that would go into high-stakes decision-making in the field. Death is permanent, and there's no way to just die halfway. If you take someone's life, you won't have a chance to undo that decision." He shrugged. "I'm guessing he hasn't killed anyone, either."

"Yeah, pretty sure. Huh, I wonder if your little lecture would make him think you're even more of a badass."

"It wouldn't make me less mythical?"

Duo smiled. "Well, I think you're even more of a non-mythical badass, anyway."

back to previous part

on to next part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/186618.html.
Two Chances : 2

"Guess what today is!"

"Tuesday?"

"...Guess again."

Heero admittedly hadn't been paying much attention before. But Duo's flat tone did the job of sharpening his attention. As a show of good faith, he minimized the incident report he had been reading before turning to Duo.

Although Duo had seemed miffed by his absent-minded answer earlier, he didn't have that pinch in his expression that spoke of true irritation, so Heero felt he could rule out any truly spectacular miss on his part. But just to be sure, he ran through their relationship milestones and found nothing corresponding to today.

Alright then, pre-scheduled event? No, they hadn't planned to meet for lunch today. Good thing, since he'd already finished his lunch at his desk. Had he seen or heard anything around the office? Maybe... "The first day of Hanukkah?" he tried skeptically.

"Whoa, hey, you got it!" Duo beamed proudly at him. "Time to celebrate!"

He frowned faintly. "We're not Jewish."

"Yeah, well we're not Christian or Catholic or anything either, and we do Christmas."

"I believe you said we celebrate Christmas commercialism."

"Yeah, well, Hanukkah's got eight times the commercialism!"

Duo's logic was difficult to argue with sometimes. "Wouldn't you prefer the twelve days of Christmas, in that case?"

His expression brightened. "Ooh! I know! We should do all three! That's twenty-one days of presents."

That was not what Heero had been going for. Time to divert. "Well, seems I've already missed the first day here. You'll have to give me a little more notice next time."

"Hm." Duo gave it some serious thought. "Well. I can settle for a kiss today."

"I can do that."

"And two kisses tomorrow."

Heero wasn't sure he liked where this was going.

"And three the day after. And... that'll be two hundred thirty one kisses, please."

Well, alright, the number sounded daunting, but it was certainly within his power to achieve. "Can I pre-pay? I kissed you more than once this morning."

"Starting now."

Heero deployed a tactical sigh to let Duo know what he thought of Duo's arbitrary rules. "Later, then. You'll only get the one, so you better make the most of it."

"Well, you can't pay ahead, but no one said you can't pay extra."

"Where would the sense be in that?" He reveled in his moment of victory while Duo pouted, and moved on before an adequate counterargument to be found. "Did you come in here just to announce what day it is?"

"Hm? Oh! Bachmann just bought fresh fried tasties from the deli for the occasion. She said we should try some while they're toasty hot."

Heero stared at him for a moment. "This conversation went pretty far afield."

Duo shrugged. Wasn't uncommon. "Come on, let's grab some before people start coming back from lunch."

back to previous part

on to next part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/186287.html.

I was out-of-towning and missed the proper start date here. To anyone following along at home, I'm backposting the start of this year's set to fake consistency, and also because I haven't done anything to really earn an extra three days to get this done.

The following collection of ficlets is not intended to take place in any single timeline.

Two Chances : 1

"Oh. You going?"

"Yeah. I wasn't planning to, but then they announced the raffle, and..." Duo seemed slightly abashed. "I mean, most of that stuff, I really don't care about, but they're giving away that weekend getaway package..."

"You're interested in that?" Heero didn't mean to sound dubious. He wasn't sure if he succeeded.

"Ah, well, actually, I've got this friend at the shelter, she's about to get married, but she was saying there wasn't anything in the budget for a honeymoon, so... I don't think it'd be too offensive if I gave it away? If I won?"

Heero huffed. "I don't think that would stop you."

"Well, all the same..."

"You can have my ticket."

Duo paused for a second, then shook his head. "Nah, you have to actually attend to win. You have to stick around until, I can't remember, like ten-thirty?"

It didn't take very long for Heero to decide. "That's not too terrible."

It took a while longer for Duo to process what Heero had said. "Wait... You're willing to attend?"

"The people at the shelter do good work."

"That's... you're willing to do that?"

Heero's slightly raised eyebrow said, "Don't make me repeat myself."

"Uh... Oh, maybe you can just give me your ticket, I'll put it in at the start, and then you can maybe just show up around ten-thirty?"

He waved the offer off. "It's fine. I'll live."

Duo fidgeted. "Well, I kind of have a higher bar for that, for you, for how you spend your time."

A corner of Heero's mouth tilted upward. "Hm, well, if you're offering, I suppose you can keep me entertained, then."

"Me?" He really didn't feel like he was on top of his game at the moment.

"Price you'll have to pay, to double your chance to win."

"Oh." Something in the nonchalant way Heero threw that out there, followed with direct eye contact, finally clicked for him. "Well. I think I can manage."

on to next part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/185940.html.

fic - two degrees : 12

Thus concludes the Two Degrees holiday collection. Phew, we made it through one more year!

Two Degrees : 12

Duo pushed open the door to the hotel room. The first thing he saw was Heero waiting for him. A lovely first sight, to be sure, especially since Heero was only wearing a towel, but that was an especially odd place to have put a chair, and Heero was definitely not in the habit of putting himself directly in vulnerable sight lines. The wry expression on his face definitely said 'what have you gotten into now?'. And so Duo wasn't particularly alarmed when the door finished opening and revealed a man holding a gun on Heero.

He went ahead and crossed into the room, and set the bag holding their dinner down on the first available surface, before turning back to his unexpected guest. "So. What can I do for you?"

"You have something of my client."

"Pretty sure I don't." Duo leaned casually against the wall.

The man snorted. "You are definitely the thief that stole the Karlson from my client's collection."

"Not denying it. Just saying, the item is no longer in my custody."

The man pressed the muzzle of his weapon to the side of Heero's head. "Where is it?" he growled.

Duo carefully gauged the calm but irritated twist to Heero's lips. "Hey now, no need to start threatening innocent bystanders."

The man made another disdainful noise. "You brought this 'bystander' in when you decided to fuck him. But now's not the time to discuss your shitty life choices. Now, tell me where it is!"

Duo pushed off of the wall with only partially feigned outrage, though he was careful to keep his hands in view. "Hey, I have made plenty of shitty life choices, but this guy is not one of them!"

Heero rolled his eyes.

The man made a vaguely aggressive gesture. "Hey, back off--"

And before he knew it, Heero shifted just enough to take his head out of the line of fire, snatched the gun out of his grasp, surged out of his seat, tripped the guy, and smashed him on the temple with his own gun, all in pretty much one smooth motion.

"Talk about shitty life choices," Duo said, shaking his head. "A shitty life choice is trying to hold a guy hostage, who has like three black belts in bad-ass, second-degree."

Heero nudged the guy with his foot to confirm he was down for the count before looking at Duo with a raised eyebrow. "You didn't tell me you were expecting company."

"I wasn't! I met up with you for some honest-to-goodness R&R! I made delivery on the item days ago, got my money, case closed."

"Hmpf." He put the gun down and turned toward his duffle bag.

Duo brought their dinner to the table, trying to decide what to do with it. "I'm really sorry about that. I'll make it up to you. Though... how did the guy get in?"

"Must have stolen a keycard. I heard it beep while I was in the bathroom, but it didn't sound like you coming in."

"And you decided not to take him out immediately?"

"I didn't know who he was," he answered mildly. "Or what you would want done with him."

"So respectful," Duo sighed contentedly. He sidled up to Heero and kissed him as soon as he'd pulled on a shirt. "How did you take him out without dropping your towel?"

"How could I earn a black belt without knowing basic skills?"

Duo grinned and fingered the top of the towel, still wrapped securely around Heero's waist. "Woulda been more interesting if it'd slipped off..."

Heero put his hand firmly on Duo's, stopping those sneaky fingers from loosening his towel. "Not while there's a body on the floor."

Duo threw the body a scowl. "Oh. That."

"Your body, your play."

"Bleh." Dealing with bodies was really more of Heero's thing, but Heero was right about where responsibility lay on this one. He glared at the unconscious man while considering his options. "Think we can pack it up and get out of here before dinner gets cold?"

"I'm choosing the next hotel."

His nose wrinkled in irritation when he looked up and realized Heero had managed to drop the towel and pull pants on while he was distracted. Black belt, indeed. "Oh, come on, you know this was only gonna be our initial rendezvous. I've got much better than this planned..."

"I'm vetting those plans."

Ah, well, fair. There was a body on the floor, after all. Duo started packing up. The sooner they got out of here, the sooner they could pick up where they left off.

<a href="https://turnippatch.livejournal.com/185481.html"
Two Degrees : 11
Part 11

The ocean was a little gray today, being slightly ahead of what might be considered even an early beach season, but the weather was still fair. Duo watched the waves for a minute or two before deciding, "I want to go into the water."

Beside him, Heero glanced over at him with some surprise.

"It's... I mean, it's not like this is the last chance ever, but... Anyway." He kicked off his flip flops, took a deep breath, and started toward the water.

Heero was quick to follow. "Might be a bit cold," he observed mildly.

"Not gonna go for a swim."

Duo slowed once his feet hit the wet sand. He took a few steps in, far enough for the water to lap over his feet, before he came to a halt.

Heero stopped beside him, noticing with some sidelong glances that Duo seemed to be preparing himself to go farther in. He let Duo have some time before he shyly offered a hand.

It took a moment for Duo to notice, but when he did, he smiled and forgot about his trepidation while their hands got used to each other.

Heero gently pulled him into the ocean. "How far do you want to go?"

He hemmed and hawed for a bit, letting the decision be made for him as each step took them farther. "Not so far we have to fight it."

Heero came to a stop with the water about mid-thigh, with the small waves pushing only occasionally up to their hips. Duo, who had mostly been keeping his eyes down, watching his legs disappear into the water, bumped into Heero a bit. He muttered an apology and stepped away, but the water contrived to push him back against Heero's side again, and he did not fight it.

"You're right," he said, to have something to say. "It's a bit cold."

Heero chuckled silently. Quatre had invited them out because he was planning on putting the beachhouse on the market ahead of the season, and frankly ahead of the beach itself disappearing into the ocean in a few years. In a way, this was one of the last chances, in this one place.

"Bit weird, too," Duo added quietly.

"Not your first time, you said." Maybe that reminder would take the edge off.

"Yeah, no of course I came down with the Sweepers, and heck you were there with us for a while, in the middle of the freaking ocean. And for sure, they made sure I knew how not to die in all this water. But..."

"Still weird?"

"...Still weird." He moved his free hand through the water. "All this water... Bit different, being on the water, for a reason, versus just... I dunno, sightseeing?"

"Like doing an EVA is different from just... sightseeing."

"Yeah, exactly." He pressed up against Heero more snugly, pleased at their mutual understanding. Being out in the black was always quite the experience, no matter how many times you went out there, but having a job to do was different from just floating there, taking it all in. "You do much... sightseeing?"

Heero shook his head. "Never a dedicated trip. A moment here or there."

"Gotta be honest... I think I like space better."

"It's got stars," Heero agreed. "But it wouldn't be the same, holding your hand through a suit."

Duo laughed, and decided to turn them so they could embrace. "Yeah, you definitely have a point. Definitely... couldn't do this." Well, they were already up to their balls in a new frontier, so now seemed like an appropriate time to push their relationship past the flirting and into the kissing, and wasn't it just lovely that Heero seemed to have the same idea.

The water did not like being ignored, and gave them a reminder that it was time to go back inside.

back to previous part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/185191.html.
Two Degrees : 10
Part 10

Duo drew up short on the threshold of the kitchen. Heero was waiting for him in front of the electric kettle, blocking his access. With a glare, Duo closed half the distance between them, but Heero didn't move out of the way. "Excuse me," he said stiffly. "My water has boiled."

Heero stood his ground relaxedly. "The proper temperature for brewing your cup of coffee is rather short of boiling. It'll wait."

"For what, exactly?"

"I think we have something to talk about."

"Oh? Seems like I might have to brush up on my coffee brewing technique before we have that conversation."

Heero's lips pressed together into a flat line before he loosened up again. "We had a moment last night."

"If you say so."

His irritation was expressed in a brief flare of his nostrils. "You seemed alright with that. Until you weren't."

"Hm." It was a sound that was neither agreement nor denial.

Heero just looked steadily at him.

Duo knew that, if push came to shove, he would crack first, so he charted his withdrawal from that edge carefully. "I know eavesdropping is a bad habit..."

Heero rewarded him by stepping to the side. He would earn no points for keeping Duo from his caffeine, now that he'd decided to cooperate.

Duo advanced with a dignified nod. He measured his grinds with perhaps more care than he'd normally take, to buy himself some extra time while he picked his words. "But I happened to overhear... Trowa mentioning to Quatre... that... you've expressed an interest in sex recently."

Not the words Heero had been expecting. He frowned faintly, because he also hadn't been expecting Trowa to share that information. "...And?" Duo was concentrating fiercely on his pour, leaving Heero to ponder it on his own. "...You suddenly thought I might just... have considered you a convenient target of opportunity?"

Duo stared fixedly at his coffee as it dripped into his mug.

His hands were no longer occupied with the kettle, so Heero edged closer to him, until they were nearly touching shoulder to shoulder. "Duo. No one but you... has ever stirred such an interest in me."

They were close enough that Duo's involuntary twitch caused them to touch. He jerked away from the contact slightly, but then held himself still, and after a moment, eased back into his original position. "Something change?"

A small shrug, another brush, there and gone again. "I just started noticing our little moments."

"Moments?" Duo detachedly observed that that came out a little breathy.

"We've had more than one."

"Oh. I... Well, I didn't think you'd noticed."

"Oh, well, I didn't. And then I did."

"Ah. And, uh. What do you plan to do, then, now that you've noticed?"

"I suppose the first thing I should do... is make sure we're on the same page about this."

"Oh. Right." The practicality knocked the breath back into him. The gears in his brain started turning properly again. "Sorry about... last time."

"Hm."

"'Spose the ball's in my court now, eh?" He gave Heero a quick kiss on the cheek as declaration of intent before busying himself with finishing up his cup of coffee.

back to previous part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/185003.html.
Two Degrees : 9

Quatre saw a photo booth and pulled Trowa off with him with a bright, eager charm that set off Heero's internal warnings. It confirmed what he had already suspected. He sighed softly and turned to his companion. "I don't know how Quatre hasn't realized yet... that I can always tell when he's trying to set me up with someone. I apologize."

Duo looked at him curiously. "What's to apologize for?"

"I don't know how Quatre hasn't realized that there's never anything but awkward silence when he returns. To say nothing of my growing exasperation with him."

"Well. This is a little awkward."

"I'm glad you agree."

"But only because I actually asked Trowa to find an opportunity to re-introduce us."

"You..." Heero blinked at him for a few seconds. "What in the world for?"

Duo shrugged. "I don't remember there being any awkward silence between us the last time we talked."

"But we were talking about our work," he responded, puzzled.

Duo grinned. "I'm pleased you remember." He let that sit there for a good long moment before moving on. "I remember some other guy trying to talk to you about your work, and I remember you shutting him down pretty quickly. It was actually pretty awesome, just how neatly you denied him anything to latch on to. You don't look like you remember that part."

Heero shook his head slowly. "I do that often enough."

Duo chortled. "But, I managed to get you going, and you do remember that part, and so do I, and I have to say, I rather enjoyed it, above and beyond the work-related content of the conversation. And so here we are."

"That's... unexpected."

"It's unexpected that you said anything, to be honest. Apologizing and all. Why did you feel compelled to?"

"Well, I..." Heero considered that for a moment, somewhat surprised by himself, now that Duo mentioned it. "Did I... start a conversation with you?"

"I think you did." Duo chuckled at his faintly mortified expression. "Do you really hate talking to people that much?"

"I... just don't warm up to people very quickly." There was a note of wonder in his tone. "Not... usually."

"This seems like a promising start to me. Let's keep it going."

back to previous part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/184657.html.
Two Degrees : 8

Only once he had scrubbed the engine grease off his hands did Duo pull off the cap on his head to shake his hair out.

"You know, I used to wonder," Heero said, still putting away some of their tools. "How you dealt with your hair in a space suit."

Duo waved the cap. "I have my ways. And it's all braided up. It doesn't go everywhere. It works. What I've wondered though, is that Zechs. He definitely didn't braid up his hair, and this --" He waved the cap again. "-- seems a little beneath him."

Heero pondered it for a moment, then shrugged with a small smile. "I never spent my time wondering about him."

Duo winked in acknowledgement of the sideways admission. "I figured it was just the privilege of the aristocracy to be completely impractical."

Heero weighed that statement and did not judge it to be off the mark. "Maybe the helmet helped somewhat."

Duo snorted. "Man, that helmet was a disappointment."

"In what way?"

"I was expecting it to be hiding, like, disfiguring burns or something. Or even just mild burns that an aristocrat would be embarrassed to be seen with. But no, he was only hiding his face so his daddy wouldn't turn over in his grave."

"Privilege of the aristocracy."

"Quatre was loud and proud."

"And then his father was killed."

Duo paused, but only for a moment. "Okay, yeah, but not because of Quatre's rebel activities. God, can you just imagine Quatre wearing a mask -- or helmet, or whatever?"

"Goggles don't count?"

"Nope."

Heero did not bother trying to exercise his imagination any farther than that, knowing he would not be up to it. "Ah, well he and Trowa would be a matched set."

"Heh, imagine the awkwardness. He and Trowa meet for the first time, and they realize they're wearing the same thing."

"Quatre would almost certainly breeze past any awkwardness."

"Yeah, true. But, enough about them." As Heero surveyed the garage to make sure the workspace was now cleaned, Duo came up to him for a sideways hug. "Tell me more about how much you used to wonder about me."

back to previous part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/184487.html.
Two Degrees : 7

Duo opened his door with an apology. "Oh, sorry, did you not get my text?"

"I already had dinner ordered," Heero lied with no qualms whatsoever. "So I thought I'd come over anyway. I hope you don't mind?"

Duo shot a glance down to the bag in Heero's hands, his instinct to neither refuse nor waste food momentarily at war with his desire to stick to his guns. He stepped back and waved Heero in.

Heero smiled and delivered his bag to the dining table while Duo locked up. "I don't have to stay long. I can just give you your share of dinner, if you don't feel like hanging out tonight."

Duo was hugging his hoodie around himself tightly as he wandered up to him. "No, it's just... you know, I'm... having an off-day. That's all."

"I know." He tugged Duo down gently to kiss his forehead, and pressed his cheek against that forehead briefly before releasing him. Yep, Duo was definitely running a light fever, no matter how much he didn't want to acknowledge it. "Maybe I can help make your day better. Do you feel like eating right now?"

Duo hesitated ever so slightly. Heero started unpacking dinner to make the choice easier for him. Good hot food, easy to slurp down. Nothing that said comfort food too obviously, but on the other hand, comfort food was good for all sorts of occasions, or even none at all.

Heero smiled to himself as Duo moved into the kitchen to get some plates, pleased by his cooperation so far, though perhaps it was only luck. Duo wasn't so ill that he felt too vulnerable for Heero's company.

Heero knew better than to suggest illness to Duo in so many words. Duo had a thing about illness. Fortunately, Heero still had quite a few levers he could pull to make sure Duo got the care he needed, without having to press the issue.

back to previous part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/184085.html.
Two Degrees : 6

"I could introduce you."

Duo started a bit, his attention having drifted off somewhere. "What? To who?"

Quatre jerked his chin over in the direction of his boyfriend. "Trowa's friend."

"What friend? That guy?"

"The guy you've been staring at for at least five minutes? Yeah, that guy."

"What?" Duo shifted in his seat, perhaps not coincidentally turning his body away from the direction in question. "I have not. I was just watching them set up the speakers."

"Uh huh. Paying very close attention." Quatre latched onto his sleeve. "Come on, let's go over."

Duo shook him off. "No, thanks. Do you even know that guy?"

"Of course I do. He's Trowa's friend!"

"Uh-huh. What's his name?"

Quatre's nose wrinkled in a way Duo found very familiar. "Heero," he said quite confidently. "...I think."

"Uh-huh. Not much of an introduction, I say."

"But you do want one?"

"I did not say that." He rolled his eyes at Quatre's expression. "Okay, he's a looker. Happy? But I don't know a thing about him, and apparently, neither do you, so I can't say I'm very interested in him."

"I know he's Trowa's friend, and I know he's helping Trowa out today, so he can't be all that bad. In any case, I'm going over to help Trowa out, and you can come with me, and if that guy just happens to be standing there as well, well... Trowa can introduce him!"

Duo made a skeptical sound. "Great, so that would make him... a friend of a friend of a friend."

"Perfect! Let's go."

back to previous part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/183927.html.

fic - two degrees : 5
Two Degrees : 5

Duo casually detached himself from his conversation once he managed to catch sight of Heero through the crowd. It had been both an easy and a difficult exercise. It was easy to predict where Heero would not be, but not especially easy to locate him in all the leftover places. Duo drifted in that direction, naturally striving to blend in, but after being pulled into an interaction he had no particular interest in at that precise moment, he put more purpose in his step so he could get away with just a few nods of acknowledgment until he got to the side door that led to the patio.

Heero was alone there, leaning against the edge of a planter, sipping a drink. Duo tilted an eyebrow at him, and Heero answered with the shrug of one shoulder. Duo lifted both shoulders with his snort. "Come on, you can do better than that."

Heero shrugged again. "A little warmer than I prefer, in there."

Duo's eyes lifted to the heat lamp nearby, which was probably technically warmer than it was inside, but had to agree that it contrasted nicely with the fresh, almost nippy evening air. "You had the perfect excuse not to come to the party today," he said, wiggling his fingers in the direction of Heero's arm in its sling. "Why didn't you take it?"

"When have I ever let an injury as minor as this stop me from doing something?"

"What, afraid of damaging your reputation? You'd think it'd damage your rep even more, showing up to the company Christmas party."

"There was a thing I had to do here. It's done, so I think I'll make my exit soon."

There was something in his inflection that made Duo think the 'thing' wasn't attending the party itself, but something rather more specific than that. "A thing?" he prompted curiously.

Heero sipped from his drink again. Duo waited him out. "I suspected Bernstein might try to trap you into joining his steering committee again tonight."

Huh, okay. True, the guy did like socially engineering situations that were difficult to wiggle out of gracefully, and true, Duo had thought that perhaps Bernstein had reached the point of escalating his pressure campaign. He settled for a shrug. "Yeah, probably? I kinda crossed paths with him a few times tonight, but he never engaged."

"Hm."

That small sound was awfully suspicious. Duo tried to re-evaluate the encounters, but they hadn't stuck out much in his mind. "Were you lurking in my background or something?"

"Hn."

Definitely not an innocent sound. He answered with an amused one. "Silly pilot. Your arm is a perfect excuse for both of us to get out of here. Let's scoot."

back to previous part

on to next part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/183600.html.
Two Degrees : 4

Duo had only gone into the next room to see if Trowa was ready to play his part of entertainment for Rashid's nephew's birthday party. Heero was not expecting the loud "Fuuuuuu~~ck!" that issued forth. It was followed by a laugh which sounded like Trowa's, but then it paused and started up again, with a far more sinister and psychotic edge.

Duo swore again. Loudly. "Holy freaking fuck, Trowa! You're supposed to be a clown at a kid's birthday party! Not fucking The-Joker!" He fled the room and glued himself to Heero's side.

A distressingly authentic Joker strolled into the room after him, with a distressingly authentic jaunty step. "The Joker is a clown, Duo." They were at least spared a distressingly authentic Joker-like tone of voice.

"What? No. Are you trying to mess these kids up?"

"The Joker is extremely on-trend, you know."

"Does Quatre know about this?"

"Of course." He did a little prance and twirl and ended with a pose that somehow seemed rather manic, despite being stationary.

Duo jumped. "I'm... ugh, I'm... gonna go tell them you're ready." He hustled out of the room with as much dignity as he could muster.

"I didn't know he had a problem with clowns," Trowa said mildly to Heero.

"It's... a matter of degrees, Trowa." The Joker did not seem impressed with this answer, so Heero tried once more in Duo's defense. "Probably he walked in there, just expecting a harmless pierrot."

"Amir's really into Batman." He pulled a Joker version of a sad clown face. "I'm probably going to spend the next hour getting chased around and beat up on."

"I'm sure Rashid appreciates it." Heero paused thoughtfully. "Will Quatre be joining you as Harley?"

Trowa smirked and tee-hee'd.

"I wish you weren't so good at that."

back to previous part

on to next part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/183414.html.
Two Degrees : 3

Duo watched Miles' fluffy butt scamper off for a drink. "Man, it's been a long week. You don't really notice how tensed up you are until you settle in for a good puppycuddle."

Now that the dog was out of the way, Heero scooted a bit closer to him. "I'm sorry I've been away. What's been happening this week?"

Duo waved away both the apology and the concern. "Nah. McConnell and Van Hulkenburg have just been engaged in a pissing contest all week. I've just been keeping my head down, trying not to get pissed on. It's a lot harder than it sounds."

"Yeah, I've been there."

Heero's hand was resting casually on his own knee. Duo commandeered it. "Too bad we don't work at one of those places that lets you bring your dog to the office."

"You could reasonably get away with bringing Miles. He's a certified comfort dog, now."

"Whaaat?"

"Well, you might have a legal right to bring a comfort dog, but I suppose Psych might have something to say, if you were in need of one."

Duo shook his head like he was shaking off a daze. "Wait, they have certifications for that?"

"Why not? Otherwise, you could just bring any old animal into the office, and how would they know it's actually a comfort companion?"

"What, like, does he have like a badge he can flash at people?"

"No."

"Can I make one?"

"...That's entirely up to you."

"I mean, he's got to have something that proves he's legit, right?"

"He has paperwork."

"We should, like, make him a doggy diploma, hang it on the wall over his bed. He's got a certificate from his obedience course, too, doesn't he?"

"Somewhere, yes."

Duo paused, if briefly. "You're not getting excited about this."

Heero considered it, then squeezed his hand. "I'm glad your long week is ending well."

"Ah, well, you're back. That helps, too." Duo closed the distance between them and commandeered Heero's whole arm as he leaned into him.

"Glad to hear it."

back to previous part

on to next part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/183270.html.

fic - two degrees : 2
Two Degrees : 2

"The group has been holed up in an old building down in the Moore complex." Noin pulled up satellite imaging in one corner of the wall screen, and recent aerial drone surveillance shots on another. "As you can see, there's water to the west, and it's almost completely open ground on the north and south sides, so that's a no-go, and there's these four buildings to their east, forming a 'safe' corridor up to pretty darn close to this side entrance, except of course, they've accounted for that."

Duo leaned forward and scrutinized some of the photos from the drone. "Booby-trapped."

"Yes. Martineau thinks they can disarm this one and that they can get around the other two via this path..." She drew some lines with her stylus. "But he isn't comfortable with it. He hasn't been able to figure out what, yet, but there's something here that makes him uneasy."

Duo frowned as he gestured vaguely at the screen, fingers following his thoughts. "You have a different view of this intersection?"

Noin threw a couple more shots onto the screen.

"Hmmm...." He ended a few seconds later with a snap. "Right there." He jabbed his finger at the display. "You see? If you..." He started to gesture for the tablet, but then shook his head impatiently and just got out of his chair to point directly at the screen. "The only way to avoid this is to go around this way, but that'll expose you on this side, and then you can't get to this trap over here, but if you can see here? See? That's chained to this over here, and so if you go here, you trigger this, which looks relatively innocuous but look at how it's built over here... It'll funnel all the force straight into your team."

"Huh." Noin took down some notes to forward to the strike team.

"Good eye, Martineau. Yeah, this all is pretty crafty."

"Do you have the complete blueprints for that building?" Heero asked, pointing to the one the group was actually occupying.

Noin swiped the scenario away and flicked the requested blueprints onto the screen. "We've been entertaining the idea of using drones at night to drop some RC units onto the roof. You can see there, there's a maintenance shaft they should be able to get into, but we haven't figured out yet how that might help us accomplish the objective. We can go for the kill with explosives, but it'll be tricky to do it without damaging the package."

Heero pointed to the area below the building. "Underground parking?"

"It's underwater now. The ocean took it almost six years ago."

His finger shifted to indicate an entrance to the underground parking structure, some fifty yards away from the building proper. "But still accessible?"

"Underwater infil? Hm." The water level hadn't risen too drastically, but the area was low lying, so it hadn't taken much for the underground parking structure to flood. "I'd have to put the question to the engineers. The building itself is judged to be sound, so I assume the foundations, and the garage, can be presumed sound as well."

Heero studied the images and went up to put the side of his hand up against the screen. "The water's probably about this high inside. That floods this entire area, probably no guards in this whole section." He sat back to let her think through the rest of the scenario on her own.

"Hm, well, if he's got no certified divers on his team, I'm sure we can find some. Good call, Yuy."

back to previous part

on to next part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/182952.html.

This year's collection is brought to you by climate change.

Two Degrees : 1

"Hey, I remember you."

Heero pretended a moment of recognition, but in fact, he had recognized the man a ways off. "From Wednesday's convoy, right?"

"Yup! I'm Duo." The introduction was accompanied by a grin and the offer of a handshake.

"Heero," he answered, swinging his rifle back to take the offered hand. In truth, he had caught Duo's name back on Wednesday, too, when another of the aid workers had called out to him.

"Just you today?"

"There will be others coming along. I just saw you setting up. You shouldn't be out here by yourself."

"Trucks aren't here yet. It should be fine."

"For now." He scanned the area, automatically clocking all of the unknowns. "Nevertheless. You're a foreign aid worker. You are always at risk."

Duo frowned. "These people are starving, Heero. They aren't the enemy. They're victims of a region-wide drought."

Heero grimaced, and not only because this wasn't the way he had wanted this to go. "Yes, and I'm here to help ensure they get fair and orderly access to the aid you're here to provide them. There are people out there that don't want that."

Duo drew breath to respond, but ended up releasing it in a sigh. He couldn't argue with that. Things had been okay at this location so far, but another distribution point ten miles to the south, run by a different organization, had almost been raided by a local gang. "Yeah. I guess. People suck."

"You don't. I mean. You're here to help."

"Well." He summoned up a smile. "So are you."

"Me?" Heero shrugged, suddenly feeling faintly awkward. "I'm just a man with a gun. Not something this country needs more of."

"Well. As long as you only point it at other people with guns, I guess."

"I'll do my best."

They stood together in companionable silence for a short while, Duo lining up the hand trucks while Heero kept an eye on things. In due time, Heero's radio informed him that the convoy was inbound and the rest of his team would be arriving shortly.

"Hey," Duo called out as Heero finished his response. "Heero. After we finish up here, maybe we can hang out some time."

Heero blinked at him, and then settled on a raised eyebrow.

Duo shrugged. "I like meeting new people. Shitty circumstances, sure, but when are people like you and me not in shitty circumstances? It's important to meet people in all kinds of circumstances."

Heero weighed that, then nodded. "Sure."

on to next part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/182678.html.

Woohoo, I've managed to muddle along for another year. Thanks for playing, folks.

Two AM : 12

"Missed opportunity, Yuy."

Heero eyed Trowa sideways. "Aren't you missing an opportunity to be with Quatre?"

"I," Trowa said with some emphasis, settling in at the rail next to Heero, "was happily making out with Quatre at midnight, thanks for asking. While the same could not be said for you and Duo."

"Hmm," he said disinterestedly. He was watching the event company packing away the drones they had used for the Winner New Year's light display.

"Don't 'hmm' me."

"Hn."

Trowa punched him in the shoulder.

Heero turned to him with a mild glower. "Why would you imply there's some reason I should have been making out with Duo."

"Well, perhaps you could have started with a heartfelt confession first."

"What kind of shoujo manga have you been reading lately."

"Sounds like maybe you should read some. Pick up some pointers."

Heero made a half disgusted, half exasperated sound.

"Ah, speak of the devil," Trowa murmured cheerfully. "Hey, Duo. I was just about to go find Quatre." He waved and quit the area.

"Uh." Duo watched Trowa's retreating back, then looked back at Heero in some confusion. "I... was just coming over to hang out with you. And... I thought it was my idea. But Trowa had on his 'I'm messing with you' face, so suddenly I'm not sure anymore. Did Quatre actually send me over here?"

Heero shrugged.

"Well. Anyway." He leaned on the railing Trowa had just vacated. "I feel like we didn't get a whole lot of one-on-one time today."

Heero straightened, took a step back from the rail. "Hm, well, today's pretty much over. We can talk tomorrow?"

"I feel like we don't talk much anymore," Duo said in a rush, like he was trying to forestall Heero's departure. It was true, they were all staying over for the night and would see each other tomorrow, but still. "I don't know why. Is something going on?"

Heero raised an eyebrow at him.

Duo soldiered on through his sudden feeling of awkwardness. "Because if Quatre sent me over here, well, it's probably for a reason?"

"Don't assume his reasons make any sense."

"Well, even if they don't, I'm at the very least curious to know what they were. Even if Trowa's just messing with me, I want to know what I have to get revenge for. If you don't know, maybe we can figure it out?"

Heero looked at him for a few seconds before deciding he had to give Duo something or else he wouldn't drop it. "Look, Trowa's messing with me, not you. Don't worry about it."

"Huh. And Quatre?"

He shrugged. "Where one goes, the other follows."

"Uh-huh. And... what's this got to do with me?"

"Nothing," Heero replied promptly. "It has nothing to do with you."

"O-kay. Then... you need me to help you mess with Trowa in return?"

Heero made a somewhat discontent sound. "You're persistent today."

"Yeah, well, I guess I don't know how to mind my own business any better than they do. Probably, they just want to help?"

His lips twisted sourly. "I brought this upon myself. They don't know the full story and I don't want to tell them the full story, so they don't know that their attempt to 'help'... is not helpful."

"Oh. Well... wanna tell me the full story?"

Heero's answering look was complicated, like it was yes and no and omg go away and thank you for asking all rolled into one. He looked away with a sigh. "They appear to be encouraging me to deliver some sort of love confession to you, without realizing that I have already tested those waters without their dubious assistance, and found them unreceptive."

Duo went through a series of internal responses. 'Love confession' -- snort, right, no wonder Heero was so annoyed. Wait, to who? What, to me? Holy-- Wait, tested? When was -- Unreceptive? "What?" he finally said aloud.

Heero went back to watching the workers trundling their gear off the grounds.

Duo slowly parsed that bewildering sentence again. Heero... liked him? Like that? He hadn't known that, boy had he not known that, but okay. He skipped the part about Quatre and Trowa, and... "What do you mean, you tested the waters? And... I... I have no idea what you're talking about."

Heero exhaled audibly, worked his jaw for a few seconds like he was irritated with this entire situation but trying not to let it out, and finished with another sigh. "Do you remember a few months ago, I think you were talking about Padilla's bad luck with women? You said something about how his lack of love life was not for lack of trying and at least mine was by choice, or something like that, and I don't remember exactly how I got to asking whether you would consider going out with me, but I did, and you said no."

"What?" Duo was feeling more than a few steps behind here. He cast his memory back and could remember Padilla's last attempt at romance and could imagine such a quip, but did not at all remember Heero saying any such thing. "Uh, I mean, if I was in the middle of joking around..."

"You said no," Heero repeated carefully. "Quickly and firmly. No. As if the thought had never occurred to you. As if the thought itself confounded you. No."

"But..."

Heero shook his head, dismissing any apologies. "You were in the middle of joking around. I'm sure you didn't take me seriously. I'm sure I didn't want you to take me seriously just then. But. If you'd ever had even the slightest interest in return... I think your response would have been different. Am I wrong?"

Uh. Well. Fuck. He wasn't wrong. The thought really had never occurred to him. So definitely never occurred to him that it hadn't even occurred to him, even when Heero was right in front of him speaking the thought aloud. Fuck. "But that just means... it hadn't occurred to me. That's all... not like, no, absolutely not, of course I would never..."

Heero made another dismissive gesture. "I didn't take it personally. Like I said. Tested the waters: unreceptive. End of story."

"But..." Fuck. He didn't know what he wanted to say, let alone how to say it. Only this was not what he wanted Heero to think. He didn't know what he wanted Heero to think, but not... Christ, not anything that made him look like he was trying not to tense up over the whole thing. "Fuck, is this why... I feel like we haven't been talking as much recently? Or... I dunno, I think maybe, like, conversation-wise, it's just as much, but just not as... not... saying as much. I guess." Gah, he sounded stupid and uncertain, but fuck it, he was feeling stupid and uncertain, so there.

Heero shrugged again, switched to looking up at the stars.

"I... kinda missed that. You. Us. Ugh, you know... that thought hadn't really occurred to me either until just now. I mean, I did start missing you somewhere along the line, but I've only now just put my finger on it. On what was feeling wrong."

"Sorry." Heero's soft voice cut into the muddle inside his head. "We can get back to that, probably. I just need to find my balance."

"Dammit, don't apologize. It is a gross overstatement to say my waters are unreceptive. They're just... They were just totally not paying any attention. Okay?"

They looked at each other expectantly, Heero waiting for him to continue, Duo waiting for him to affirm. Heero spoke first. "And the difference is?"

Duo stared at him some more. "Fuck if I know. Look, all I'm saying is, these waters are not unreceptive. I don't know if they're receptive, because apparently I don't know what the fuck is going on in there, but they are not unreceptive, are we clear?"

Heero tilted his head slightly in concession of the point.

"Because if I don't know what the fuck is going on in there, you sure as fuck don't get to, either. Fuck," he said one last time, running a hand through his bangs. He needed to stop swearing and start being more articulate.

Heero huffed, this time in faint amusement. "Just take a breath, Duo."

His breath actually caught a bit in that moment, while at the same time a bit of a laugh bubbled up in his throat, and the result was a pathetic cough. He managed to chuckle through it. "Goddamn I missed that." He waved his hand vaguely at the wry tilt of Heero's lips.

Heero, clearly, did not have a good idea what exactly he was referring to, but with practiced ease, just went with it, and that also sent a wave of wistfulness through Duo. He reached for Heero's sleeve suddenly, tugging on it gently in a 'don't go' gesture. Heero glanced down, then back up, and Duo caught his eyes earnestly. "I... would seriously consider it. Am seriously considering it. Very seriously considering it. And... not just to make you feel better or something stupid like that, okay?"

Heero's expression wavered uncertainly for a second before it settled into cautious nod.

"Okay then." Duo took that recommended breath now, and released Heero's sleeve. "I... heh, I suppose I oughta find my balance before I say anything more tonight. That's probably enough excitement for one night. I... wanna head back in?"

Heero gestured for him to lead the way.

back to previous part

This entry was originally posted at https://turnippatch.dreamwidth.org/182313.html.
