To those who are, and those who have them.

We gave Lori's dad a card and a Merle Haggard CD. Then we ate brats n'kraut and had some strawberry cobbler.

Called my Dad a bit to confirm he got his card. My folks went out to lunch at the local Country Club with my aunt & uncle. My Dad's got an endoscopic checkup mid-week to verify some ulcers have been reduced through medication. He's had a rotating series of moderate-to-abit-more-serious cardio and gastro issues in recent years. On par for life in his mid-70s, I suppose.

Easy, relaxing day (and a bit less humid than usual for this past week).

I wonder.

I've had a story idea rattling around the brainpan, but with certain things going on, it's probably best I don't run the 30-day distraction. However, I really do miss writing. Well, I've got one more day to think about it (want to register by Friday).

It's a fantasy story, straight no satire, and doesn't feature any recognizable characters. A fresh start, if I start it.

Had a few interactions with the legend of Sylvia today. First, I watched a recent 'Warehouse 13'. The episode featured among its 'cursed artifacts', the author's typewriter (from 'Ennui'). The object's effect field made the target stand still and care about nothing, eventually starving to death. Then, I was shopping the bargain movie bin at the store after dinner, and came across a $3 copy of the 2004 movie starring Gwyneth Paltrow. Which I then bought.

So last Thursday, a recruiter I've been trying to get onboard with finally called me about being in the pool for a nice contract job in Lexington. Before I could move forward, could I take some assessments? Excel, Word and a few others that are relevant to the job? Sure.

Turned 'em around Friday, and just in case the automated process didn't get all 'notify-y' back to their contact, I sent a few emails as well to names I had there. It was Friday afternoon before a holiday, so I figured I might not get a reply before Tuesday. I heard nothing, so I called today. I dug up the lady's phone number from Thursday and gave a call.

"Oh, you completed those? Great, let me look in the system, Oh, here they are. Okay, we can move forward now. I'll call the client, you should hear from me by Friday with their interest. Those tests were more of an internal thing to show the client we're screening." Well, I figured that. I didn't figure that I'd have to prompt *you* to look for them.

Basically, my scores *sat* there unnoticed until I gave *her* a kick in the pants. Smooth, people. Ugh, the corporate slackness, it BURNS.

(And readers, don't sell me the packaged response that they're busy and have lots of applicants. I know that, it's crazy out there. Her inbox was probably full for lots of reasons. But I think if you are recruiting someone, call them, and send them tests, that perhaps you police *yourself* and check on those tests, maybe drop them a quick email. After all, I sent her *two*.

(Aced the tests, natch.)
