Book Review: The Way of the Wolf by E.E. Knight - Book 1 of The Vampire Earth series.

Way of the Wolf by E.E. Knight

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

First of all, let me start out by saying that it took me a good four months to read this book. Not because it was boring or lacked intrigue, simply because I read it while I got my infusions and occasionally when I took a hot bubble bath to relax. With that pretext out of the way, let me get to the review.

Mr. Knight seems to be highly influenced by a recent sci-fi television series. I refer to Stargate SG-1. The first few chapters were almost an identical set-up to the way the Stargate 'universe' is set up with the Asgard, Goa'ould, etc. This did not detract from my enjoyment of the book in the least. In fact, it gave me a reference point from which to understand what he was describing. So, either he or I like that show far too much to be able to draw so much from it. Probably me... I am an uber-geek when it comes to sci-fi.

The story spun out well, with plenty of backstory where it was needed, and I felt an almost instant liking of the main character, David Valentine. The ending was a surprise to me, as I was almost certain that for the books to continue the girl would have to die, but she did not - at least in this book. I was very appreciative of the glossary at the end, because it did take about 2/3 of the book to figure out exactly who/what the Quislings were. That leads me to wonder if perhaps it couldn't have been a bit clearer in the books for the descriptions of much of what was in the glossary. Nevertheless, it is there, and if you choose to read this book, I suggest starting with the glossary at the end.

About the only real negative I found in the book was not even Mr. Knight's fault: poor editing. For a novel that size (380 pages) I would not expect to find a half dozen or more typos and/or word omissions. That looks poorly on ROC Publishing, but again, not up to Mr. Knight to catch.

All-in-all, I expected to like this book from the beginning, that's why I went ahead and bought the first three in the series at BAM last year, and I was not disappointed. I look forward to starting Vol. 2: Choice of the Cat tomorrow!

I love cold weather as long as I can bundle up to be in it. I love to watch snow fall, but since that doesn't happen much here, I settle for watching it rain. On rainy days I prefer to be indoors with a cup of coffee or cocoa and watch television or write, but that doesn't happen often either because I'm normally driving to work in the blasted stuff. LOL

I do tend to get a bit grumpy if the rain lasts more than a couple days. I need doses of sunshine interspersed with the rain - much like in life!

I'm selling off most of my Beanie Babies in preparation for the possible move sometime in the not too distant future. (That whole 'they're relocating my office 60 miles away' thing.) I had posted a msg to one of the Beanie comms on LJ that I would sell them for $2-3 each, and a woman responded wanting to see them. So I drag three large baskets out and take pictures of all of them. Told her $2 each plus shipping if she wanted all of them, $3 each plus shipping if she wanted to pick and choose. She picks out 10 of them, then asks me if I'd consider trading. TRADING? Lady, I'm trying to clear out clutter, not add to it! Told her about the move and her words? "eh, then I'll pass."

Thanks for nothing BITCH!

A cocky Department of Agriculture representative stopped at a farm and talked with an old farmer. He told the farmer, "I need to inspect your farm."

The old farmer said " OK, but don't go in that field."

The Agriculture representative said, "I have the authority of the U. S. Government with me. See this card? I am allowed to go wherever I wish on agricultural land."

So the old farmer went about his farm chores. Later, he heard loud screams and saw the Department of Agriculture Rep running for the fence and close behind was the farmer's prize bull. The bull was madder than a nest full of hornets and the bull was gaining on the Rep at every step.

Nothing has happened, except that I don't trust the new owners of the company I work for, and though they may be the most liberal-minded creatures on the planet, I've heard they are Republicans primarily (I'm gonna get eaten alive for that remark, I can hear you all now! LOL) and as such aren't open to the Slash that I love and live for.

Fic journal is still open to the general public, so if you want to read my fics, they're easily available. Of Course There is a Santa Claus!

I remember my first Christmas adventure with Grandma. I was just a kid. I remember tearing across town on my bike to visit her on the day my big sister dropped the bomb: "There is no Santa Claus," she jeered. "Even dummies know that!" My Grandma was not the gushy kind, never had been. I fled to her that day because I knew she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told the truth, and I knew that the truth always went down a whole lot easier when swallowed with one of her "world-famous" cinnamon buns. I knew they were world-famous, because Grandma said so.
It had to be true.
Grandma was home, and the buns were still warm. Between bites, I told her everything. She was ready for me. "No Santa Claus?" She snorted...."Ridiculous! Don't believe it.That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad!! Now, put on your coat, and let's go."
"Go? Go where, Grandma?" I asked. I hadn't even finished my second world-famous cinnamon bun.
"Where" turned out to be Kerby's General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars.
That was a bundle in those days. "Take this money," she said, "and buy something for someone who needs it. I'll wait for you in the car. "Then she turned and walked out of Kerby's.
I was only eight years old. I'd often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself.
The store seemed big and crowded, full of people scrambling to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, clutching that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy, and who on earth to buy it for. I thought of everybody I knew: my family, my friends, my neighbors, the kids at school, and the people who went to my church.
I was just about thought out, when I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker. He was a kid with bad breath and messy hair, and he sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock's second grade class.
Bobby Decker didn't have a coat. I knew that because he never went out to recess during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but all we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn't have a cough; he didn't have a good coat. I fingered the ten-dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobby De cker a coat!
I settled on a red corduroy one that had a hood to it. It looked real warm, and he would like that.
"Is this a Christmas present for someone?" the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down.
"Yes, ma'am," I replied shyly. "It's for Bobby."
The nice lady smiled at me, as I told her about how Bobby really needed a good winter coat. I didn't get any change, but she put the coat in a bag, smiled again, and wished me a Merry Christmas. That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper and ribbons and wrote, "To Bobby, From Santa Claus" on it(a little tag fell out of the coat, and Grandma tucked it in her Bible). Grandma said that Santa always insisted on secrecy. Then she drove me over to Bobby Decker's house, explaining as we went that I was now and forever officially, one of Santa's helpers.
Grandma parked down the street from Bobby's house, and she and I crept noiselessly and hid in the bushes by his front walk.
Then Grandma gave me a nudge. "All right, Santa Claus," she whispered, "get going."
I took a deep breath, dashed for his front door, threw the present down on his step, pounded his door and flew back to the safety of the bushes and Grandma.
Together we waited breathlessly in the darkness for the front door to open. Finally it did, and there stood Bobby.
Fifty years haven't dimmed the thrill of those moments spent shivering, beside myGrandma, in Bobby Decker's bushes.
That night, I realized that those awful rumors about Santa Claus were just what Grandma said they were: ridiculous. Santa was alive and well, and we were on his team. I still have the Bible, with the coat tag tucked inside:$19.95.

Railroad Accident
In a potentially terrible accident at a railroad crossing, a train smashed into a car and pushed it nearly four hundred yards down the track. Though no one was severally injured, the driver took the train company to court.

At the trial, the engineer insisted that he had given the driver ample warning by waving his lantern back and forth for nearly a minute. He even stood and convincingly demonstrated how he'd done it. The court believed his story, and the suit was dismissed.

"Congratulations," the lawyer said to the engineer when it was over. "You did superbly under cross-examination."

"Thanks," he said, "but he sure had me worried."

"How's that?" the lawyer asked.

"I was afraid he was going to ask if the lantern was lit!"

An amazing family tradition

All of his life Charlie from Cape Breton had heard stories of an amazing
family tradition. It seems that his father, grandfather and great-
grandfather had all been able to walk on water on their 21st birthday. On
that day, they'd walk across the lake to the boat club for their first legal
drink.

So when Charlie’s 21st birthday came around, he and his pal Corky took a
boat out to the middle of the lake. Charlie stepped out of the boat and nearly
drowned! Corky just managed to pull him to safety.

Furious and confused, Charlie went to see his grandmother. "Grandma, it's my
21st birthday, so why can't I walk across the lake like my father, his
father, and his father before him?"

Granny looked into Charlie eyes and said, "Because, you dummy, your
father, grandfather and great grandfather were born in January, you were
born in July."

and sad. Took my mom to the airport this afternoon... *sniffles* I miss her again already. Wish she could have stayed through Christmas, but she has a job, even if it isn't paying her much of anything. This past weekend was INSANE I tell ya! So much happened that I don't think I could remember it all to tell you, only that this coming weekend is going to be equally nuts, and I DON'T EVEN HAVE THE DANG TREE FINISHED YET!

Xmas cards are all mailed except for the overseas folks. (Don't hurt me too bad for them being abnormally late, 'kay?) And I still have about 5 packages to put in the mail, hopefully before Friday. LOL It definitely isn't getting done tonight since it's 10:45 right now and I'm about to fall asleep at my desk.

The additional Xmas fic came along quite nicely last night. I guess about 2/3 done with it, then have to do some revisions I imagine. But it should be done by the 22nd barring unforseen complications! Got caught up on LJ last night, but have missed all of today's posts, so if there's anything I should know, PLEASE link me. I've received a ton more cards in the mail, and I'll get around to posting the names ASAP. Hopefully tomorrow. Somewhere along the way I have to pay my bills too. *heavy sigh* I need another vacation! *headdesk*

Side note, got half the Xmas cards for US folks mailed out today before my PictureIt! program died due to some type bug/virus/whatever. Got rid of the problem and just finished printing out another batch while I wait for the next pie to finish cooking (pumpkin, 2 for tomorrow's family get-together), so those 20 will go out in the mail Monday. I have several that go overseas, and those hopefully will go out Tuesday, along with some packages that have to be mailed. Have already finished the main course, and hub has to shred the Velveeta for pimento-cheese sandwiches. Made the tea and bought the cokes, so hopefully everything will be taken care of for tomorrow. I'll be glad when it's over.

Am enjoying spending time with my Mom. Very nice to have her here from Colorado. :-) Makes Christmas a whole lot brighter, even though she won't be here next weekend, she'll have helped make it much nicer! She put together two baskets to give away as door prizes this year. They look gorgeous, but I don't even want to consider what each one cost. If I had to guess, I'd say $20 each. Perhaps $25.

Anyway, gotta check on this pie and get back to catching up on LJ, even though I should be writing, my brain can't function well enough after midnight even with a huge dose of coffee to push it along to write more than this here!

I'm off!

No one is online, LJ is dormant, and nothing is happening in the Yahoo groups. Everyone out Christmas shopping? As mentioned Thursday night, I am in Gatlinburg, TN. Tonight is the Cav. Ball, and I'm about to start getting ready soon. Yesterday we rushed to get here in time for the 'meet-n-greet', which wasn't much to get excited about. We went to eat dinner first in the hotel, since we hadn't eaten anything since breakfast. Twenty minutes after we'd arrived, we left. We're not socialites, and not very outgoing, so the three people my hubby knew he said hello to and then we made like wallflowers. The DJ sucked, it was set up around a pool, and basically everyone who was there already knew each other from past balls or serving together in units or in Iraq. So we spent the evening in our room. Yep, all dressed up with no place to go.

So, today we got up, had breakfast here at the hotel, (which was okay really, despite having to eat with a utensil that resembled a pitchfork), then walked down into town and did some Christmas shopping. Got my niece a handmade bear from the Wacky Bear shop (some of you may be familiar with Build-a-bear, same thing). This is a black cat I named Tabitha, and she has a rich blue wizard's costume to wear, with hat and wand. I'll have to take a picture of it when we get home. She's adorable!

Started writing on my zine fic today! WOOHOO!! One whole page... LOL. I have a feeling this fic isn't going to be as long as I initially though, unless I change up the formatting between now and the end. *headdesk* Did I mention I hate deadlines?

Anyway, I've got to take a shower and get myself primped.
