The Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB), a critical backbone of the nation’s energy sector, implemented TrueConf Server to enable collaboration for 3,500 employees. The self-hosted video conferencing and messaging platform significantly enhanced corporate workflows among remote facilities.

The Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) is the sole organization entrusted with transmission of power throughout the country. Since its establishment in 1996, the main goal of the company is to construct effective management of the national power grid.

PGCB’s needed to provide employees with secure video calls and messaging capabilities over distance, taking into account the critical importance of the company to the country’s infrastructure. This required implementing a reliable system operating within an isolated network, with no risk of disruptions or external access.

After a thorough selection process, Systems & Services Limited, a network and infrastructure solutions integrator, assisted the Power Grid in deploying TrueConf Server, which fully met the requirements and became the core of the company’s collaboration environment.

The new system enables the seamless transition of most meetings, both strategic and training ones, to an online format, while also consolidating interaction and storage of work information within a unified system. Employees can securely connect from any device at any time without exposing the company to the risks typically associated with cloud messengers and communication services.

The Power Grid Company of Bangladesh has equipped its meeting rooms for holding board meetings and coordinating plans with government leaders. To streamline workflows, these formal conferences can be joined by employees from remote locations without any quality loss.

The LDAP protocol is an effective tool for centralized management of account data in a corporate infrastructure.

You can learn more about the LDAP protocol and Microsoft Active Directory in our article.

LDAP-compatible directory services (such as Active Directory, FreeIPA, or 389 Directory Server) support Single Sign-On: users receive a single account which enables them to access all corporate applications. This strategy reduces administrative overhead and improves user experiences.

Such solutions as TrueConf Server and its more advanced version TrueConf Enterprise are frequently used in corporate settings. They provide team messaging and video conferencing capabilities. In this case integration with LDAP directories can also be used. Detailed configuration of the TrueConf messenger is described in the documentation.

One should take into account that sometimes directories may contain service accounts (machine objects) and regular users who do not need access to certain services. TrueConf Server enables administrators to exclude such entries from synchronization. To do it, you should configure various filters to define the group of users who will be synchronized from Active Directory.

To successfully find users, we can use two tools available in LDAP integration settings of TrueConf Server:

  • Path (distinguishedName) — the full unique name of an entry in the directory. With DN, you can select a group of users to be added to TrueConf Server (if LDAP integration is already configured on your server, you may skip this step).
  • Filter Disabled — this parameter specifies the accounts that are disabled and will not be displayed on your TrueConf Server.

Filtering configuration with the help of DN

To make sure that only certain users can access the features of TrueConf Server, we recommend creating a separate group of objects in the directory service.

You can specify the group to be synchronized in the section Users → LDAP / Active Directory → LDAP Settings.

Filtering LDAP accounts 17

On the opened page, find the Path (distinguishedName) field and enter the parameters based on the data from the table:

Designation Explanation Purpose
dc Domain Component Part of the domain DNS name
ou Organizational Unit Division, department, group
cn Common Name General name of an object (person, group, service)

Based on this DN table, the trueconf_users group in the example.com domain will have the following entry:

cn=trueconf_users,ou=Groups,dc=example,dc=com – AD, FreeIPA / ALD Pro, 389 Directory Server, OpenLDAP

If you are unable to determine the DN of your group, or if your directory tree differs significantly from the one shown here, use the terminal (console) on the machine where the directory service is installed. Run the following commands and you will see a detailed description of the DN for your group:

  • Get-ADGroup group_name | Select-Object DistinguishedName — AD (run in Windows Powershell)
  • ipa group-show group_name --raw – FreeIPA/ALD Pro (in the Linux console)
  • ldapsearch -x -H ldap://your-ldap-server \ -D "bind_dn" -W \ -b "dc=example,dc=com" \ "(cn=group_name)" dn — for any LDAP server on Windows and Linux

where group_name is the name of your group.

ldapsearch -x -H ldap://localhost -D "cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com" -W -b "dc=example,dc=com" "(cn=group_name)" dn
Enter LDAP Password:
# extended LDIF

# LDAPv3
# base <dc=example,dc=com> with scope subtree
# filter: (cn=group_name)
# requesting: dn

# search result
search: 2
result: 0 Success

# numResponses: 1

For more details, please refer to the relevant documentation on directory services.

Once you have successfully connected to a directory service via LDAP, you can select a group by clicking on the Browse button.

Use of a custom filter

Sometimes, a group, whose users need to be synchronized with TrueConf Server, has service accounts that cannot be disabled or moved. In this case you can configure the use of filters on the side of TrueConf Server.

To learn how a filter can be created, refer to the official Active Directory documentation.

You can also use the table constructor below to create a filter. In particular, you can take required parameters from this table and insert your data.

LDAP filter builder

Filtration Filter
Search for users (objectClass=user) – only for AD
(objectClass=inetOrgPerson) – only for OpenLDAP
Only active accounts (!(userAccountControl:1.2.840.113556.1.4.803:=2)) – only for Active Directory
Member of a specific group (memberOf=CN=tcusers,OU=Groups,DC=example,DC=com)
There must be an email address (mail=*)
Specific email (mail=test@example.com)
The username contains the keyword (cn=*test*)

The memberOf parameter has to match the group selected for synchronization on the side of TrueConf Server.

For example, here is a filter that will find all active users from the Developers group in Active Directory if their names include the test substring:

(&
  (objectClass=user)
  (cn=*test*)
  (memberOf=CN=Developers,OU=Groups,DC=example,DC=com)
  (!(userAccountControl:1.2.840.113556.1.4.803:=2))
)

(the filter can also be written in a single line without line breaks)

After the filter has been created, go to Users → LDAP / Active Directory → LDAP Settings, open the Advanced tab, and enter the filter you created earlier, in the Filter Disabled field.

Filtering LDAP accounts 18

After you apply new settings, only users, who match the specified filter, will be added to the server.

For a better understanding of the topic, we recommend reviewing the documentation provided by your directory service provider.

In addition to the Filter Disabled parameter, there are other parameters such as Filter Login, Filter CallID, and Filter Group. There is no need to change them because they are used to specify which entries in the directory service will be considered a user or group.

About company

Bangladesh Betar is a state-owned radio broadcaster in Bangladesh established in 1971. Today, the company delivers news, educational programs and cultural content in six languages, acting as a trusted source of news and entertainment for millions of listeners across the country.

Task

The main task of Bangladesh Betar was to coordinate the work of 31 radio stations across the country. Planning essential broadcast content required frequent in-person meetings, while breaking news demanded immediate response and close cooperation.

Employees relied on fragmented messaging and conferencing apps. As a result, important files and work conversations were scattered across multiple platforms, slowing information exchange and creating security risks, which was unacceptable when handling sensitive data.

Due to concerns about the security of cloud-based services, Bangladesh Betar decided to replace its disparate cloud-based messaging and conferencing tools with a unified, internally controlled system. The key requirements were to maintain full control over communications, eliminate external dependencies and associated risks, and ensure strict compliance with information security standards.

Solution

Driven by the preference for an all-in-one solution, Bangladesh Betar deployed an on-premises unified communications platform developed by TrueConf.

TrueConf Server runs on the proprietary protocol, granting the broadcaster complete administrative control over the video collaboration system and ensuring independence from third parties.

The deployment of TrueConf Server within the broadcaster’s private network prevented data transfer to external servers. The solution consolidated all communications into all-in-one apps, uniting staff from country-distributed radio stations into a digital collaboration space for discussions, news coordination, and content release.

All communications are seamlessly synchronized across all devices, providing instant access to call and chat history. TrueConf mobile applications enable employees to stay connected with their colleagues, even when working remotely.

Bangladesh radio

Results

The implementation of TrueConf Server marks a transformative step in Bangladesh Betar’s digitalization. By prioritizing security, scalability, and intuitive collaboration, the broadcaster has effectively addressed operational bottlenecks, resulting in a more cohesive and connected work environment.

Connect whatever you want

TrueConf introduced a module designed to integrate its on-premises corporate messenger with various IT services and automate business tasks with multi-purpose chatbots. The new solution connects TrueConf Server with third-party AI assistants, GPT modules, cloud services, and also allows migrating chat history from other platforms.

TrueConf Chatbot Connector is a powerful new module which transforms the messenger into a unified corporate hub. It allows organisations to easily integrate TrueConf Server with any solution — from cloud messengers and project management systems to complex CRM and ERP systems — using chat bots. In this way, companies can rely solely on the trusted messenger, regardless of whether the integration involves an external solution or an internal one.

The chatbot API enables IT specialists to implement multiple corporate scenarios using any programming language. Developers can create and connect multi-purpose chatbots to automate routine processes. For example, employees will be able to submit their sick leaves to HR, onboard new hires, automatically receive links to useful materials, track the days until vacation, and more.

Through integration with chatbots, specific use cases can also be implemented, such as managing a smart office directly in TrueConf desktop or mobile apps: users can control lighting, adjust blinds, book meeting rooms, manage climate systems and checkpoints.

Employees can access GPT models and AI assistants directly in TrueConf apps, allowing them to submit requests and receive instant responses without the need to switch between apps or services.

This module enables system administrators to create bots that provide real-time updates on the status of individual IT infrastructure nodes and the load on the video conferencing platform.

With TrueConf Chatbot Connector, you can also transfer chats, including message history, files, and participants, from cloud services to TrueConf messenger to ensure that no critical data are lost. It is also possible to set up two-way synchronization: messages from external communication services are automatically sent to the corporate messenger, and replies are routed back to users of cloud-based platforms.

“TrueConf Chatbot Connector is a logical development of TrueConf ecosystem as a core for corporate communications. Our solution provides companies with a tool for secure and controlled integration, turning TrueConf into a powerful hub for interaction with both the team and other IT systems and services of the company,” said Dmitry Odintsov, CEO of TrueConf.
