Stremio Introduces Supporters for Premium Users

Stremio has officially introduced Stremio Supporters – a paid premium version of the application with advanced features.

The free streaming app most of you already know just rolled out an optional paid tier, and the timing makes sense once you read the reasoning behind it.

Stremio has run completely free for 11 years, and the team says that will never change. What did change is the budget math behind keeping a free app current.

In their announcement, the developers explained they had reached the limits of what they can build on the funding they have, while users keep asking for more. Their words were blunt about it: ‘this was the only fair way that we could push forward towards such user expectations.’

Stremio Supporters Pricing Tiers

There are three tiers, and the free one is not going anywhere. Here is how it breaks down on the official donation page:

• Basic – free forever, with every current Stremio feature and access for everyone.
• Supporter – $39.99 per year, which unlocks the experimental perks.
• Champion Donor – $199.90 paid once for lifetime access to those same perks.

Right now the checkout takes Credit Card and Cash App. I would love to see crypto payment options added down the road, since a privacy-minded crowd tends to prefer paying that way, and it feels like an obvious fit for this audience.

Premium Features for Stremio Supporters

This is where the value sits, and honestly the list is better than I expected for the price. Supporters get access to a stack of experimental tools the free app does not include:

• User Profiles – up to 6, with optional PIN protection
• Child-safe profiles and catalogs
• Skip Intro and Skip Outro
• Move, hide, or rename any catalog
• Filter stream results by keywords you include or exclude
• Improved subtitles plus a live subtitle sync menu
• Download Manager
• Configure Cinemeta with translation and 135 translatable catalogs
• Customize the app appearance

The team labels these as highly experimental, and they left the door open for some to reach free users later if the budget allows.

One open question I have not seen answered yet is whether unlocking these requires an app update, or whether they switch on automatically once you sign up and log into your account. I will update this post when that gets confirmed.

The Community Reaction Has Been Loud

Head over to the Stremio subreddit and you will see the comments lighting up, with plenty of users pushing back on the idea of paying for anything at all.

I get the reaction, but I do not fully support it. Plenty of streaming apps already gate features behind a premium plan, and a non-profit asking for support to stay alive is no different than Kodi, Wikipedia, or any non-profit asking for donations to maintain operations.

The “11 years free” line is the whole story here, because an app that never charged a dime is finally asking the people who use it daily to chip in 40 bucks a year, and the loudest critics act like that is a betrayal rather than a survival move.

Think about that number for a second. Cable packages and the big streaming services run hundreds of dollars a month, hike their prices every year, and keep getting worse with more ads and shrinking libraries. Stremio is asking for $40 for an entire year, and somehow that is the line people will not cross.

I have been recommending Stremio for a long time, and I would rather pay a fair price to keep a great app developed than watch it stall out or get bought and ruined.
