Kind of a long story. Okay, so in summer of '09 I got hooked on Guiding Light, a friggin soap opera. hee! Sadly, one that was canceled and going off the air in September. Always late to the party, I am. Anyway, got hooked because of the same sex pairing of Natalia Rivera (played by Leccia) and Olivia Spencer (played by Chappell).
Otalia. *happy sigh* This story and pairing? It kind of kicked Xena to the curb as being the object of my ~~obsession~~ affection.
So, the soap is being canceled and CBS SUCKS and wouldn't even let Otalia kiss. Not even in the last friggin' episode. *shakes fist* But both actresses were amazed and touched by how much the story of Otalia meant to so many people - especially Crystal. She wanted to give back, while also stretching her own creative muscles - and Venice came from that. The first season was okay, they were finding their legs as it were, and the second season just got better and better and better. As soon as the second season comes out on DVD I am SO buying both sets.
So, that's my long story slightly shortened. Heh.
Geez, and I didn't even really talk about the actual icon. Ooopsie. Mostly, just liked the shot of Ani hugging Gina from behind, desperately trying to make an emotional connection with Gina. But Gina is too damaged to let Ani in; they're physically connected but still so far apart. I've also gotten into using a lot of negative space in an icon and that seemed perfect for this moment of them quietly longing for more than what they have. *shrug*

This is the aforementioned Olivia Spencer. MMMMMM. This shot caught my eye, partly because I love profiles and Crystal's is especially delicious, but also because of her neck at the angle. I...have a bit of a thing for necks, especially when the tendon is standing out like that.
Messing around with cropping I ended up cutting off much of her profile but with that delicious neck, who cares? lol
And because I'm such an icon whore and now that I've gushed about CC's profile, here is an icon that actually shows it off. GUH

Gabrielle, specifically Warrior Gabrielle - have quite the thing for her warrior persona. Plus, she rocked the short hair. I liked the photo and wanted to use it, but also try to use interesting crops and this is what I came up with. Felt like it needed something else and added the text. Wanted it to be there and readable but not taking too much of the focus. Not sure if I succeeded, but is what the finished product ended up being.

My reading of books has fallen off quite a bit the last few years. Never thought that would happen. *blinks*

I have, however, found the wonder of audiobooks, made all the better by being able to download
them to my iPod. Makes for fun driving times. :D

So now shall try and copy those on my flist that do the book list things, though not sure how well I'll stick with it.

1)Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith, read by Scott Holst. Downloaded this at the end of December, so most of it was listened to in January. I liked it. In some ways quite a bit, but in others...
The Good: the intertwining of fantasy with history was well done and it really kept my interest. The narrator was pretty decent; there were some voices that it was hard to tell who was speaking, but for the most part it wasn't confusing.
The Not-so Good: it bugged me, perhaps more than it should, that so much of what led to the Civil War and slavery in general, was blamed on vampires. Yes, Vampire Hunter and all that but...*shrug* It just seemed to let plain old humans off the hook too much. Guess I just couldn't divorce the real horrors from the imagined enough to just enjoy the book without that eating at me.
As for a book specific that bugged me: SPOILER! Major SPOILER! Highlight to read.
I did not like that Henry changed Abe, or more to the point that Abe went along with it. For a guy who detested vampires, who more than once refused to allow Henry to change those whom Abe loved that had died, it seemed unlikely to the extreme that Abe would allow it and not find a way to die for real.

2)The Fiery Trial by Eric Foner, read by Norman Dietz. Non-fiction.
This is about Abraham Lincoln and slavery and how it came to an end, as well as how his views evolved as more time passed. Really quite enjoyed it and found it all fascinating - and yet sad and depressing too. Just in that, well, people suck ya know? This time period was not all that long ago all things considered and added to that all the things that stayed wrong and abhorrent for the next 100 years. Hell, plus the things that have yet to change enough. People still suck. *sighs*
But, anyway, did like the book and it was well written. I also thought the narrator did a terrific job. He did really well making it clear when he was reading the 'main' narrative and when he was reading quotes or footnotes or things like that.

3)Vision in White: The Bride Quartet, Book 1 by Nora Roberts, read by Emily Durante. It was good, nothing spectacular, but well written and enjoyable enough. Still really like Roberts writing and she fleshes out characters well, even those that aren't the main ones, but...it was just a lite/quick/easy listen. Enjoyable but not spectacular.
The narrator...was pretty good. Not one of my favorites, but decent enough.

4)Small Favor: The Dresden Files, Book 10 by Jim Butcher, read by James Marsters. Yes, that James Marsters. :D
It's a Harry Dresden novel and I swear they just get better and better. In this one Queen Mab of the Winter Court of the Sidhe asks for a favor. Just a wee little favor...things go downhill for Harry from there. hee!
And hells bells! Marsters is an awesome narrator. He just does an excellent job of bringing the story to life and his Harry is just spifftastic. I don't even hear Spike all that much, even with characters that have English accents. Sometimes with certain words, but it's not distracting at all when it happens.
It wont happen right away, as my money tree has yet to go, but am planning to download all Dresden books just to listen to Marsters read them. Even though my sister owns up through book 9. He really is that good.

5)Turn Coat: The Dresden Files, Book 11 by Jim Butcher, read by James Marsters.
Have about an hour, maybe a little more, to go until this is finished but am including it in this list anyway.
Warden Morgan has been accused of treason of the White Council and has come to Harry for help. Surprise surprise, things go downhill from there. But oh, what a ride.
There's only one quibble I have with it. SPOILER, for this book and Small Favor. Highlight to read.
Michael was hurt really badly in Small Favor and it's not mentioned how he's doing. *pouts* I wanna know, damn it! So that's a bit annoying.
Still totally loving the book, though. And as soon as I'm done posting will listen to the rest of the book.

Wow, I suck at keeping this here journal updated. :/

So, life has been moving on. I started working the day shift M-F a couple weeks ago and when the Desk Officer retires in a couple months will be taking over his duties. In some ways I miss the graveyard shift, but having weekends again will be cool. Is cool. Whatever.
My supervisor also told me the other day that he's been in this line of work for 30 years and I'm the best worker he's ever had. O.O
That...is just a little bit daunting. Don't feel like I'm doing anything special, just my job. *shrug*

Ummm, what else...Roping has been going well, which is the good part about having weekends off - will be able to go to jackpots and stuff a lot easier.

The newest thing is that I had my wisdom teeth pulled yesterday. I went the I.V. route and slept through the whole thing. Wheeee!
Actually feel pretty good. That is, until just a bit ago when I got on the computer. First time I've felt slightly nauseous and even feel shaky and light headed. Makes it hard to catch up on stuff. SUCKY.

car shopping is a pain in the buttocks

I'm currently looking for a car. Oh, could fix my '81 Corolla (it does have low miles) but...it's butt ugly. And with no power steering, a bitch to drive in town and/or parking lots.
Did I mention it was ugly? It's ugly. I want something fun. Something that looks cool.

For me, that basically means a Honda Civic or Accord, or an Acura Integra and in the mid '90s for the year. Not only for price range, but those years are actually my favorite body style. The newer ones? Blech.
Maybe a Toyota Celica, depending on the year. Maybe a VW Jetta or Passat, but am a bit leery of those because they're more expensive to work on.

Am going to pay cash (no payments FTW! and lower insurance as well), so that does limit how much I'll spend, and want kinda low miles. Really don't want more than 160k, but not firm on that.
Oh, and it can't be red. Yuck.
Being able to drive Mom's car for now means I'm not in a hurry, so can be picky. Whew. LOL

Aaaanyway, part of the point of this pointless post is to bitch.
There's this 98 Honda Accord LX that meets much of my criteria. Definitely higher miles than I want at 195K, but my mechanic is very good and very thorough when he's checking over a car, so I trust he'd find something major.

Here's the thing - they're asking $3450 firm. That make with that style (LX) with those miles bluebooks for private retail at $2765 for a car in excellent condition. Good is $2415 and Fair is $1890.
They also say that "this is a solid honda selling cheap cause of miles 195k" and "At this price it wont last long!"
*blinks*
Cheap?!? This price?!? I was unaware that a thousand dollars over blue book value was cheap. Silly me.
Oh, and as for it not lasting long? This ad was up last week; guess it's not selling so fast after all. Wonder why...

Senator Wyden effectively kills Internet censorship bill.

Yes! That is some damn nice news there. For a change, eh?

A few weeks ago, I sent an email asking my senators to support the...damn, can't remember the bills exactly. But one of them is to allow same-sex partners the same immigration status that married couples get, the whole marry and your non-resident spouse can come to the U.S. thing.

Anyway, just got an email back from Wyden saying he does support that, and has in fact worked on the bill with the senator from Vermont. deleted the email instead of archiving it; not very smart of me.</i>

Two cool pieces of political news in one day. Kind of unusual, but I'll take it.

Where's the fail, you say? It is in the original question: "If you were the TSA at Hogwarts, which Harry Potter character would you pat down, and why?"

What the ever loving fuck where they thinking? I don't care that they are fictional characters. The question is basically "if you were in a position of authority, who would you sexually assault" and that is not okay. EVER.

Dreamwidth has the newest demo of the update page up. Wooooaaaah, it's so shiiiiny.
The page is customizable, with a drag and drop feature. Pretty sweet.

Even better? They actually care about user's privacy. We do hope to add Facebook and Twitter crossposting someday, along with Wordpress, Tumblr, Movable Type/TypePad, etc, etc, but it will have to be set up by the end-user, and if we ever allow the crossposting of comments (which I sincerely doubt we will), it will only be available on locked entries if the comment poster is the same as the entry poster. (So, nobody will be able to crosspost comments from your locked entries.)

What's the funniest thing? Looking at their stats page, on the by day section there were over 9,000 new accounts on the 1st.

Like the 1st one: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Freedom of speech and individual liberties are what the Repubs claiming to support - and yet...somehow they keep managing to limit them/try to limit them, for anyone they don't like.
Wrong race, wrong religion, wrong sex and or sexual orientation and well, those are just shit out of luck and don't count as 'Real Americans.'

And yet the Demacratic controlled House, Senate, and President keep backing down to these jokers who admit they wont work together! ARRRGH!

Oh, and then there's the jokers that have declared September 11 to be "International Burn a Quran Day". About Islam the paster says "put an end to the notion that Islam is a peaceful religion. Islam is a violent cult with the goal of world domination."
Meanwhile, being peaceful Christians, they're going to have an armed militia there of 500 - 2000 to protect them while they burn Qurans.

I am such a bad journaler. is that even a word?

So, I sold my horse last Saturday; as my sister pointed it, it's kind of weird I sold him on my birthday.
The guy who bought him called Papa a few days ago and is really liking him and Senor is working out well so far. So, yay! Senor needs to be used a lot and this way he will, so it's all good.

Filled out benefit stuff this morning and will mail it tomorrow - and then my insurance will start August 1st. Sweeeet!

Well fuck me running. It wont cover pre-existing conditions for 365 days after coverage starts. Hahahaha*cries*
Still better than nothing and if I get hurt it will help a lot. Still, I freakin' hate the pre-existing crapola.

And in even better news, we were paid on the second. Except that I have received no check, nor has one been direct deposited in my account. Work is starting up this new iPay thing, were we don't get pay stubs in the mail, but access them online. I checked it out and the only statement that is up is the last paycheck we got in June.

I don't even know...I just...WTF?!?
So, shall be talking to my supervisor about that and see if we can track my money down.

Why? Hmmm. Partly I think it is that we saw most of the Otalia story through her eyes and it's easier to see and feel what Olivia was going through. Natalia is a more self-contained character. But mostly I just have a thing for strong characters that are deeply wounded and broken underneath it all.
And boy, Olivia has the wounded and broken covered in spades. CC did such a brilliant job of conveying Olivia's pain and how it drove just about everything she did - sometimes conveyed just through her eyes. Amazing.
One of my favorite Olivia scenes is from long before Otalia - the mud fight between Olivia and Cassie. Oh, not the actual fight in the mud though, but their arguing before that. Olivia is slinging verbal arrows at Cassie and they are annoying and making her angry, but not really hurting Cassie. But Cassie's arrows? Oh, every one is tearing into Olivia, causing gaping wounds and just breaking her a little more each time.
Cassie's rage was from mainly annoyance. Olivia's rage was full of pain and vulnerability, just bleeding from her eyes. Painful scene, but magnificent.
And, of course, the graveyard scene. Just wow.
Though my favorite angry Olivia scene is this one:

1a. Crystal or Jessica and why?
This one is not so easy to answer. CC may edge Jessica out, just because she was Olivia, but they are both really lovely and extremely talented ladies.

2. You can choose one mythical critter to be real (eg. dragon, fairy, vampire, leprechaun); which do you choose and why?
Wow. I have no flippin' clue. Not a vampire, as not a big fan of blood. Not a leprechaun, just because I keep picturing that horror movie one.
Maybe dragons? Not our scary ones from fairytales, but the ones from Pern. They're cool.

3. You can pick one of your fictional 'ships to become canon, on the condition the others never will be; who gets together?
Become canon? Well, that makes things kind of easy. Otalia is canon, so don't have to worry about leaving them out. And I consider Xena and Gabrielle canon, so that takes care of them.
So, of the non-cannon ships - Alex and Olivia from Law and Order: SVU. At least from S2-beginning of S5, when Olivia was smokin' hot and they had HOYAY leaking out of their ears.
Plus, the first femslash pairing I shipped, so it's got the nostalgia factor going for it.

4. You can pick one character to crossover into another show for a short arc; who goes where and what happens?
Hmmmm. For one character...that's kinda hard. Probably Benson with one of her cases connected to a case the BAU of Criminal Minds is working. Of course, the UNSUB is caught, with much angst from the agents and detective, and victims with agency helping save themselves.

5. Would you rather be a Slayer, a metahuman, or have Xena's "many skills", and why?
Golly. Again with the no friggin' clue.
I don't think a Slayer - too short of a life expectancy. LOL. Plus the whole 'destiny' thing would be a bit of a downer.
Metahuman would depend on the power. Flight would be cool, a power like Rogue's would suck ass. As would telepathy. My head's messed up enough on it's own without other people's thoughts clamoring around in there.
On the basis of which power you get being a crap shot, guess that leaves "many skills".

According to this, execs are trimming the cast of Criminal Minds.
By cutting AJ Cook completely and reducing the episodes that Paget Brewster appears in.

Apparently, CM is "With the exception of Vangsness’ quirky nerd godess Penelope Garcia, which has developed a strong following, the series has largely been perceived as a male-centered ensemble, with the boys getting most of the action."
*blinks* What show have they been watching? Did they not see the episodes where JJ shoots 3 charging dogs and drills a guy through a freakin' glass door? Sounds like 'action' to me.
How 'bout Prentiss taking down that one unsub last season? All the doors she's kicked in? Surviving a car crash and still tries to chase down their subject even though injured? Yeah, more action.

CM was a show with strong female characters, both an integral part of the team and of the cast. Losing an actor the show can survive (moving on brilliantly without Mandy Pantinkin proved that) but this is a gutting. Oh, and hey! It's not sexist at all that only female cast are being given the heave ho. Not at all.

Fuck you CBS. FUCK YOU.

Graveyard is still going okay; still getting used to everything being flip flopped, but the work itself is going well. Except that I have forgotten twice this past week to clock out. Arrrgh.

Still working out, not everyday that I'm at work, but more than not. Weighing myself just once a week and when I did that Thursday had lost four pounds. Wheeee! Have also taken to eating at the Cafe at work after finished at the gym - been good and gotten a salad each time. They have a lot of stuff you can choose from and it's all YUM. Just wish they were open on the weekend, but oh well.

Have a meme I need to post answers to, but it requires some thinking and am a little short on brain power at the moment. LOL.

And now it is time for me to go to bed.

Job is going well. And...I should be going to full time next week, as long as the regional office doesn't interfere. LOL
So, that is good news, especially since once I'm officially full time it's 90 days and then insurance and 401K are available to sign up for, and also start accruing vacation days. Wheee!

The only downside is that it's a graveyard shift. BUT - don't think it's going to be as bad as I thought. It's all graveyard, so that will give my body a chance to adjust, rather than bouncing between days, swing, and graveyard like it would be if I didn't take it.
Working by myself doesn't bother me and the building is secure so it's not all 'eeek! scary!' or anything.

My supervisor has also told me a few times that I'm doing a really good job, which is always nice to hear. Though figured I must be when my first graveyard shift was scheduled the other day. heh
He also told me yesterday that he's had people from the client mention me, which is also really cool to hear.
It's also good for the self-esteem. *g*

One of the things I'm most excited for with this job is the client has a gym on site for their workers - and it's available to us as well. Sweeeeeet!
I worked out Thursday morning, though because I'm needing to learn the equipment and all, it was a little slow and therefore not as taxing, but that'll get better. Yesterday morning I just did cardio on the bike thing and boy, that was a hard workout. Decided to do 40 minutes, which at about 12 minutes in I thought that maybe that was a little to long. LOL. But, decided that I needed to try and finish, that could probably do more than I thought I could.
Kind of cheated though and told myself to at least get to 30, but when that was reached decided it was only 10 more minutes and got it done. Exhausted afterwards, but felt pretty damn good that I did accomplish that.
Thank you The Biggest Loser (as well as Jillian and Bob) for inspiring me, and pushing me.
And another yay for getting to use this gym instead of having to go someplace and pay and all that.
