break my heart, sunder my belly
A new irreversible contraceptive device for women is being hailed as a breakthrough in female sterilisation.
The Essure pbc (permanent birth control) insert, just released on the national market, is claimed to be a safer, less intrusive form of sterilisation than tubal ligation and intra-uterine devices.
The flexible device is inserted into the fallopian tubes using a local anaesthetic.
The insert then grows across the fallopian tubes over a three-month period and blocks them, preventing conception.
Unlike tubal ligation, the procedure is permanent and cannot be reversed.
