It's that time of year again!

Rules are the same as previous years:

1) Choose as many people as you like and write a sentence or two about how you feel about them. It could be as simple as "you always make me smile," or "I love your icons." Just something you would like to tell them. No upper or lower limit on length.

2) Post your list to this entry. You have until midnight on February 13 (SGT) to send them in. (There may be some leeway, depending on how late the post goes up, but try to hurry!) It can be done anonymously or not, no posters will be revealed and comments are screened.

3) On February 14, a list of all the people who received comments and the comments that they received will be posted without revealing who sent them. Hopefully, lots of you will wake up on Valentine's Day to all kinds of anonymous love!

4) The valentines will post to LiveJournal and DreamWidth with links to both Tumblr and Twitter. Please don't send multiple valentines for the same user across platforms. If you've sent one on DW there is no need to also send them one on LJ :)

You can also send valentines to users of other sites, such as Tumblr and Twitter! Just specify who and where. Giants of the Earth, Chapter 33 AND 34

Most of the characterizations will be taken more from G1--especially Optimus, who is *not* the 'kill 'em all, let Primus sort 'em out' character he is in the movies. Most of the onscreen 'deaths' of Decepticons and Autobots have also fallen victim to authorial override--see the fic for details. Mild warnings for threats of violence and hatchling chaos. :D

White Aster was an awesome beta, and was great in pointing out things we missed--as always, all remaining mistakes are our own. :)

That same fallout, still in the atmosphere, meant no human-made technology stood a chance at peering through the murk to follow the battle raging over southern Nevada. All NEST could do was listen to stories told by exhausted, frightened survivors: of how passing ships flipped vehicles over like toys in their wake, endless lines of evacuees along highways ignored in favor of distant Autobot targets. Of driving under shadows that blotted out the sun for thirty miles. Of watching the horizon light up with incandescent, eye-searing flares of light, the sky glowing green and white, their very bones vibrating as the earth below quaked and shook.

Well, the challenge fever is catching and I wondered, why not do a challenge that keeps the word limit down? That is short? I still have many fond memories of tf_speedwriting and my favourite prompt there had been the challenge to do a flash fic - a oneshot limited to exactly 500 words. This kept bugging me, until I gave in and created a new Challenge on AO3:

The Transformers Flash Fic Challenge!

The goal of this challenge is to produce four flash fics of exactly 500 words. All four flash fics should be about the same Transformer character or team (continuity doesn't matter), so that at the end there is kind of a set.

Every week offers 4 prompts. Please choose one prompt per week to write one of the 4 flash fics about and mention which prompt choosen in the notes. You are free to do what you want with the prompts as long as they inspired /something/.

You can start posting from the 1st October onwards. Deadline is the 31th October.

It doesn't matter if you really do one per week or if you upload all four on the 31th October.

Summary/Prompt: Fireworks have dazzled the optics of some Autobots. And what do they want? Some more!

Spike found himself disappointed when the light show faded. He wasn’t the only one.

“Ah, it’s over already?” That was Ironhide’s distinctive drawl.

“Just when it was getting good, too!” Sideswipe’s input wasn’t too much of a surprise, as he was vocal in his likes and dislikes.

Looking around, Spike saw a few bots that seemed to be locked in place. “What did you think of it, Cliffjumper?” Spike’s question brought the red minibot back to the present.

“That was awesome!” Cliffjumper exclaimed. “Is there going to be a repeat tomorrow?”

Uncontrollable laughter burst from the young Witwicky. “The sparklers and colored air-bursts are only shown once, maybe twice a year – second time’s during the New Year’s Celebration.”

“Kapow!” the brownish-red tank – a recent arrival from Cybertron (one of Ultra Magnus’ division, routed for reinforcement of the Autobot Earth Base), - asked “when is the New Year’s outdoor light show happening? Kapow!”

“About six months from now.” Spike said.

“Nothing earlier?” Ironhide frowned. Sideswipe seemed disappointed too.

“Nope, sorry.” Blinking his eyes, trying to adjust to the sudden darkness (it had still been light when the first firework went up, and with the semi-constant glares from the burning fuses, summer’s sunset had been ignored and forgotten), Spike looked around, counting the Autobots. “Hey, weren’t there more of you at the beginning?”

“Ah, Optimus Prime remembered some paperwork he had to deal with,” the red gunner didn’t sound very convincing, but Spike realized he wouldn’t be getting the real reason Bumblebee, and about half the group had left early.

“What’s Flag Day” Heatwave asked the Burns family. Cody hadn’t known, or been able to explain it sufficiently in detail for Boulder, so the Rescue Bot leader brought the question to the chief.

His cup of coffee slowly cooling, Charlie said, “The day we adopted Old Glory as your Nation’s flag.” He sipped his beverage of choice. “While this day of remembrance is not a federal holiday, some choose to celebrate anyway.”

“Yes! A Party. What kind of cake are we serving?” Blades interrupted, excited for the chance to celebrate with Griffin Rock.

While Charlie Burns tried explaining to the easily excitable helicopter why they didn’t need to make cake for everybody on the island, Heatwave turned to Boulder and Chase. “Any excuse for a party,” he groused.

“It’s not that bad,” Boulder replied. “Human lives are short, and their memories are even shorter – why shouldn’t they remember the good times with feasts?”

“Family-get-together do not always require a large party,” Chase added, sure of that much. “The chief’s family is always here, with him.”

Cody, listening in, just chuckled. “Wait until the entire extended family comes during the full- reunion.”

“Come again?”

“Cousins, aunts, uncles, estranged brothers, more cousins, the in-laws – it can get rather crowded when everybody shows up with their spouses and kids. You need a banquet hall to seat everybody comfortably.”

Heatwave and Boulder looked at each other, turned back to Cody. “I thought Chief’s only brother, Woodrow didn’t have anybody else to call family.”

“Not quite true, Heatwave.” Chief Charlie gave up trying to curtail Blade’s enthusiasm. “I’ve got a sister who moved to the mainland. June is her name – and my grandfather had several children, not just Woodrow’s and my father – most of those uncles left Griffin Rock, setting sail for lands unknown long ago.” He looked at his four children. “My kids have all chosen Griffin Rock has hom. Don’t know why they chose so, but I’ve been honored and blessed to have them remain by my side, even as opportunities open up elsewhere in the world.”

“Hey Steely! Oh wow, it really is you!” Sharp black talons closed over the rim of the datapad, obscuring the feed from several of the cameras. “Long time no see! Whatcha been up to? Is your carrier still talking his way into everywhere he shouldn’t be in Kalis?” Another narrow, wedge-shaped helm popped down into the visual field as the datapad tried to focus. “I noticed that Ravage had just booked a transport pod, but I never thought it’d be you! Wait until I tell Rainy--it’s gonna be great to have you here. We can all go out, swap some memories, find ourselves a party or three, just like the old days--”

“Stealing my calls halp,” squeaked Ratbat breathlessly from somewhere under Erasure’s coils.

“Buzzsaw--” Ravage growled. Buzzsaw tilted his helm, scarlet optics flickering in surprise at his cohort-mates’ obvious exasperation.

“Whaaat? Why are you looking at me like that? It’s just Steeljaw. We saw the booking notice go out, so I figured I’d come see who was visiting. And it wasn’t even my idea--Frenzy was just checking up on the suite’s data traffic, so it’s not my fault!”

But the rising energy was subsuming the tacnet now, as well, burning it out, soaking every last bit of bandwidth into that coruscating dome of energy. Each pulse throbbed farther, sweeping in like the tide, washing everything inevitably into the deep.

Megatron and Optimus were almost invisible in the midst of that vortex, reduced to ragged shadows within the light. Between them, two brilliant slivers had pulled themselves free to hang in the air, burning like the heart of a star, too painful to look at directly. Felt more than seen, the twinned shards strobed, pulsing as they neared each other. Sheets of physical light danced through the ash, splitting and merging, one moment fractalline, the next pure disorder. They robed the two mecha at the epicentre like nacre, petals unfolding from the air itself. Strobing flares lanced in a column skyward, shining through every obstacle. Every color was in that light, all the wavelengths, all the amplitudes, and all the endless singing spaces in between.

“Rust-humping… son of a toaster --ugh!-- skew-wheeled excuse for a bingled shag wagon--” Maggie aimed a frustrated kick at the cleaning drone. Heavily burdened, the machine wobbled a few skittering steps sideways, spidery legs going every which way. Catching its balance and possibly spotting a stain, the tabletop-with-legs tried to saunter off, its burden swaying precariously.

“Oh no you don’t -- dammit!” Maggie lunged, grabbed at one of the braided metal ropes she’d used to secure all her stuff to the creature’s back. Clicking and chirping like a demonic cuckoo clock, the cleaning drone staggered to a halt, shorter front legs waving disconsolately as Maggie hauled it back towards the lift.

“We’re more than a little busy right now, you slaggers, so you can fragging well put your guns away. Stand DOWN, Sunstreaker!” Ratchet snarled, alternately jabbing his little plasma torch at an overeager Decepticon from among the forces now surrounding them--though they didn’t seem to be too sure whether they were supposed to be hauling the Autobots off as prisoners of war or standing guard--and his own overeager frontliner.

//Springer and I can take point and punch us free, Optimus,// Sunstreaker turned to a higher authority. //We need to regroup. The minute the battle clears up, *he’s* going to be here, and you’re not in any shape to--//

“No, Sunstreaker,” came Optimus’ unexpected reply. “I will stay.” Blue optics turned, looking towards the advancing form of the Giant, and the ash-choked sky behind him. “The Giant, the humans, Autobots and Decepticons all have risked everything this day; I will do no less. And I believe … I wish to see what Megatron will do.”

Summary: Even Autobots can wake up on the wrong side of the bed

“THAT’S IT!” broke through conversations happeing in the rec, room. Many of the Autobots that were delaying their departure to outside patrols saw Bluestreak swing at an unsuspecting mech, and flattened the red twin.

Before they could reboot their optics, the normally-easy-going Praxian stood up, appearing to loom over mechs larger than himselve, simply by flaring his gray-and-black door-panels.

Silence replaced the normal level of friendly talks, as officers, scientists, and fighters rebooted their optics, trying to make sense of the scene. No change. Sideswipe still lay prone on the ground, one smooth-talking sniper standing over his frame, looking murderous.

Gears chocked.

Front liner Sunstreaker was the first to speak up. “Thanks for that, Blue. Been wanting to do that for a long time.”

“Don’t you mean, needing?” Bluestreak shot back, door-panels still quivering, with surprised emotion.

“Naw,” Sunstreaker drawled, “Taking my twin down a peg is something I can’t do myself.”

Meanwhile, Jazz reported to Optimus Prime. “Permission to take Bluestreak down to the range, sir?”

Optimus Prime nodded, still unable to form words.

Jazz waited until he caught Prowl’s optics – when the senior tactician nodded, both officers carefully approached the still-tense sniper. “Come on, Blue, shooting stuff should help.”

“If I was feeling like myself, yes, but I think – as the humans say - I woke up on the wrong side of the bed.”

“Yikes. Drastic measures then. Boss!” Jazz simply shouted to the matrix-bearer, while Prowl cleared the hallways. “Change-of plans: Blue and I’ll be gone for a while – ignore any rumors you get of unknown seekers.”

“Huh?” Blaster summed up what everyone was feeling. “Wait – what’s going on? Jazz! Prowl! Where are you taking Bluestreak?”

“All questions will be answered – after Blue’s vacation. Be grateful I’m not the one suffering from an emotional breakdown,” Prowl’s parting words were not reassuring in the least.

Barricade had to give the Siggrath one thing--at least they built their ships big. After several Earth-years spent confined to his alt or squeezing his way in and out of tiny, ridiculously fragile organic structures, the vaulted corridors and oversized hatchways were a relief. //Finally, some room to maneuver,// he remarked to Scorponok. The smaller mech sent back a brusque intertwined glyph of negation/amusement. //Oversized ship for an oversized mech.// Scorponok had been sparked to burrow, to dig and thrive in tight spaces and new-carved tunnels. Just the thought of being buried alive made an involuntary shudder run down Barricade’s backstruts, but Scorponok actually enjoyed it. Crazy mech.
