About

TRAИƧA is a Red Hot music concept album spotlighting the gifts of many of the most daring, imaginative trans and non-binary artists working today.

“Experimental, queer, and kind of magical” – Eileen Myles to The Guardian

TRAИƧA is a concept album in eight chapters, built as an intentional sonic experience of compassion and liberation.

Red Hot released TRAИƧA the album November 22, 2024; the project continues with live interpretations of the songs and new recordings in progress.

With contributions from the most daring, imaginative trans and non-binary artists working today, TRAИƧA softens the edges of the world we know, and invokes powerful dreams of the futures that might one day thunder from its cracks.

Across 46 tracks, TRAИƧA the concept album reunites generations of trans and gender non-conforming artists who carved spaces of possibility before awareness of trans identity permeated mainstream consciousness. Moses Sumney, Sam Smith, and Lyra Pramuk pay moving tribute to the late disco icon Sylvester with a cover of his most indelible single, “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real).” Over pastures of guitar, harp, and violin, Beverly Glenn-Copeland and Sam Smith duet on a stunning new recording of Glenn-Copeland’s song “Ever New,” originally released as the opening track to his seminal 1986 album Keyboard Fantasies. Jayne County, a pillar of New York punk, teams with Laura Jane Grace of Against Me!, Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, Kathi Wilcox of Bikini Kill, and Jay Dee Daugherty of the Patti Smith Group for a new recording of her raucous trans anthem “Surrender Your Gender.” Together with Wendy and Lisa of the Revolution, London-based singer Lauren Auder covers Prince’s iconic track “I Would Die 4 U,” a monument to gender transcendence.

That this Greek chorus of 100+ artists inspired movement across genre is no coincidence. Where Sade’s pop ballad for her trans son Izaak acts like a guardian angel of the collection, originals on the album shaped by artists at the forefront of experimentation like Niecy Blues, Joy Guidry, Ahya Simone and Teddy Geiger reach into noise and a kind of neo-classical mysticism. To listen is to consider transness as a quality beyond fixed identity and a path toward survival.

RED HOT PRESENTS TRAИƧA: A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY TO CELEBRATE TRANS PEOPLE

Dust Reid, who led production on Red Hot’s 2014 tribute to Arthur Russell, and Massima Bell, an artist and activist based in Los Angeles, began tracing the contours of what would become Transa together in 2021. The two producers originally met at a video shoot in upstate New York, and immediately bonded over their shared love of Beverly Glenn-Copeland’s music, as well as a common devotional connection to nature.

The passing of SOPHIE, the pathbreaking electronic producer who died in January 2021, galvanized the producers and focused their work. “We started talking about all the gifts that trans artists have been giving to the world, and wanted to create a Red Hot project that centered and celebrated those gifts,” says Reid. “We hoped to create a narrative that positions trans and non-binary people as leaders in our society insofar as the deep inner work they do to affirm who they are in our current climate. We felt this is something everybody should do. Whether you identify as trans or non-binary or otherwise, if you took the time to explore your gender, get in touch with the feeling side of yourself, maybe we would have a future oriented around values of community, collaboration, care, and healing.”

Bell and Reid began conceiving of the album as a spiritual journey in eight chapters, a mirror of the original eight-stripe rainbow pride flag. The narrative begins at the earliest awareness of consciousness; moves through awakening, trauma, and grief; and arrives at liberation and continual reinvention. “One thing trans people do all the time is turn grief into possibility,” says Bell. “Living under the ongoing Western binary system, trans people reveal maps of possibility for everyone. It’s something that we can all learn from – expanding the possibility of human life.”

TRAИƧA is a narrative journey in 8 chapters

Chapter I

Womb of the Soul
Ancestor after ancestor tells us: we belong, connected through generations of matter and spirit. Aren’t we an endless living continuum? Aren’t we everything? Us all from the primordial soup, together in all ways. Mother, father, parent, womb; briefly parted in this moment. So I gather the letters together, and make a name out of anything and everything that could be, a little bit of truth to add to the tapestry of life.

Survival

Sometimes I’ll picture my body floating above the city. The river is soft from so far — like an emerald necklace draped gently all around us. We’re suffocating this beauty, Paayme Paxaayt, the river that birthed Los Angeles. And the concrete is suffocating us too. My body is just like parts of the land. It is hard and soft, unerringly, and covered with contradictory signs of life. Men force scars on the world because they never learned you have to open up to let yourself heal. They are so far from softening. I could hate them forever. and it wouldn’t be enough.

Chapter III

Dark Night
I hate you. I will not be the person you want me to be. I will not be my parents. I will not be a politician trading stocks with our dreams. I will not be what you made for me. Another panic attack on the subway today. Why does everyone look at me like that? Is it my fear, or theirs? This is actually a reasonable response. I cannot continue to pretend that this world is ok. As much as I hate myself, I hate you more. On the walk home, I see a pinprick of light — there’s a corner where the sidewalk opens up; it’s almost like there’s something still alive under the concrete veneer.

Chapter IV

Awakening

Waking up’s the hardest part. I didn’t think we’d make it. Or did everything else fall away from us? I know you speak too, through the flowers, through the trees. That rustling of belief in the wind. The god of flowers came down today, and told me when I die a flower will sprout from my skull. There’s no Faraday cage big enough to block out the Earth. No more lead. No more fiberglass.

Chapter V

Grief

There's these funny days, where nothing seems to happen. All I've done all day is back and forth, bed to kitchen, and back. One attempt at something. But change is all there is. Heraclitus must said it. Octavia too. We slice time up and try to track all these little pieces but the river keeps flowing and you can't stop it. Even these days I try to float around and hope for something better. I'm changing. I won't blame myself for the chrysalis.

Chapter VI

Acceptance
I remember the way you would touch me, unerring and rapturous. Consumed with need. There is still the shadow of you on my wrist when it turns just the right way. And when I turn it around, sometimes it's like my whole hand is translucent, like all the light passes right through me. I had hoped for more than this, but maybe a shadow is enough. Maybe I can still trace the pattern the light has left around me. Maybe there'll be a new word dancing in-between. Maybe it'll be a new name.

Chapter VII

Liberation

We're so close to everything that could be. I mean it. Right now. I can feel it in the air in those corners where the concrete has cracked. But I don't just mean in the decay, which this dead empire is in the middle of. I mean everything that could be is right under the surface. If we woke up one day with collective amnesia, would any of us pay rent anymore? Wouldn't we simply recognize that we all have a right to live, that our home should be our home inherently? Would we ever work in service to a handful of rich men who have some papers that say they own the planet? Wouldn't we recognize the common humanity in all of us? Wouldn't we share in the abundance of the earth? One day we will turn away from all this violence. It could be one day soon, if we let it be.

Reinvention Reinvention Reinvention
We are a river of molten light together, our struggle afire forever in my heart. Cradled in this crucible called life. Over and over again, I will soften. Metal as soft as light. Together again and again. We will intertwine, in this life or the next. I'm not in a rush.
