This is a list of the foul penalties Liverpool have been awarded by the 247 VARs in the Premier League since the system was introduced in 2019, with ‘x’ meaning no VAR-awarded foul penalty to the Reds – bear in mind, three have gone against the Reds from VARs in the past 11 games.

(Best read in the voice of Steve Coogan by a swimming pool.)

x = no VAR foul penalty to Liverpool.

Which means:

  1. Diogo Jota was the only Liverpool player to win a foul penalty via the VAR.

  2. It’s 141 games since the VAR awarded Liverpool a penalty for a foul.

  3. Never once has Mo Salah, Sadio Mané, Roberto Firmino, Luis Díaz or any other elite Liverpool attacker in the VAR era who wasn’t Portuguese been awarded a foul penalty by the VAR. Nada. Zilch.

  4. Liverpool have been penalised with more VAR-awarded foul penalties in the last 11 games than they’ve received in all 247 games with the tech.

  5. None (or neither, should I say) has ever been before the 85th minute, or with the game-state tied or Liverpool losing. Only late, when the Reds were ahead.

  6. The earliest VAR overturn of any kind for the Reds excluding offsides is 28 minutes. There have been close to 100 subjective overturns before this minute for all the other clubs combined. VARs are asleep on the job for the first third of games when it comes to decisions to Liverpool.

  7. Burnley have had twice as many VAR-awarded Premier League foul penalties as Liverpool. And they’ve not even been in the top flight much in recent seasons.

  8. And since the start of 2015 (so, 11 full years!) Liverpool have never been awarded a penalty before the 15th minute unless it was an empty stadium (as against Leeds during the pandemic).

  9. So, what time was Ekitiké fouled? Too early! VAR? Too early! Also, a foul? Too early! #LiVARpool, etc.

  10. But it’s never too early to give anything against Liverpool. The chronological spread and match-time spread of awards against the Reds looks logical. Neither is true of those for Liverpool. The ref doesn’t give it, the VAR will be laughing at Stockley Park. #bantz

  11. Liverpool have been given just one league penalty this season (three against, all fouls, all given by VARs), despite half a dozen ‘stonewallers’ that never get added together into anything that bothers anyone (someone do a compilation video of all the ones ignored, please!).

  12. For once, Liverpool got a normal number of penalties last season (nine) and won the league; this year, forget it. We can’t have you winning the league again!

  13. You can’t outplay the tricky PGMOL. David Coote, for whom they have not apologised to the world, and who worked closely with tonight’s ref Chris Kavanagh for years at the Manchester FA, is due in court next week for indecent images of a child – which sums him up amongst his many other ‘crimes’; yet when I questioned how dodgy his data looked, no one cared. (The more I research, the more it looks like he was very dodgy indeed – more in due course, but it looks highly suspicious).

  14. Coote alone awarded each Manchester club two foul penalties each, amongst his many overturns in favour of those clubs.

  15. Ultimately, if you stay on your feet, like Hugo Ekitiké tonight, you won’t get the foul penalty from the VAR, and if you are dragged over going into the box and it continues into the box (thus a penalty), as with the foul on Federico Chiesa tonight, you won’t get the foul penalty from the VAR. Because you’re wearing a Liverpool shirt, dummy!

  16. While other teams have had loads of foul penalties from VARs (well into double digits, such as City), Liverpool’s only ones remain given by Craig Pawson in early 2022 and John Brooks in early 2022.

  17. We’re now in early 2026, folks.

Below is a list of the 100+ foul penalties given by VARs in the Premier League up until November, in chronological and then match-minute order. (Only Man City have better attacking/defensive data than Liverpool across the 247 games.)

Seriously, the officiating in the Premier League is a joke. We can see it’s a joke, but when will anyone else? Probably never, as no one else cares.
