We are pleased to bring you a new release of the GitHub CLI on this Confusion 46, 3189 YOLD. We've got features. we've got bugfixes. This release has a real zest for life; can you feel it? First though, a sad note. [@mislav](https://togithub.com/mislav) has moved on from GitHub. He was instrumental to this project and without him I don't think it would have ever happened. BIG THANKS MUCH LOVE to this wonderful person! Happily, we have a new core team member though who is, truly, a delight. Please welcome [@williammartin](https://togithub.com/williammartin) , whom you'll see a lot more on issues and pull requests moving forward. Now, let's talk ***BUSINESS***. #### gh ruleset [Repository Rulesets](https://github.blog/changelog/2023-04-17-introducing-repository-rules-public-beta/) are in beta on git hub dot com and they are now also in beta on git hub sea ell eye. You can list, view, and check branches against rulesets set at the repository or organization level. Major shoutouts to [@vaindil](https://togithub.com/vaindil) for this [big contribution](https://togithub.com/cli/cli/pull/7650). This PR introduces slightly modified behavior for the
--server-portflag that should only make it more useable to CLI users. Before:
If you passed
--server-port=1234to thegh cs sshcommand, it would create the local SSH server on port1234and (very important) print the connection details that CLI users can use to connect akassh codespace@localhost -p 1234 ...This approach works well when the CLI user can guarantee that port
1234is available on the OS. This is hard to do and can't be guaranteed. The solution that the CLI currently exposes is to pass
--server-port=0which allows the OS to find a random open port and give it to CLI to create the SSH server with. Only problem is that the current logic would then keep the CLI from printing connection details. Hence CLI users would never know which random port was picked or see the connection details. The default for
--server-portis0, so even if we don't pass it it's being "used"After:
With this change, we use a feature of cobra that tells us when a flag has been "changed" (or set) even if it matches the default value. This is important, because there is a difference in behavior that we want.
With the
--server-port=0explicitly passed, the CLI will now capture a random port AND print connection details 🎉Without the
--server-portflag being explicitly passed, the CLI will continue to capture a random port but it will NOT print the connection details. This unblocks some personal OSS work I am doing for an extension that uses the SSH command to connect to the codespace.
