Facial Recognition

Start Date: 01/01/2026
The government’s expansion of live facial recognition (LFR) surveillance is another intrusive policy that was not in Labour’s manifesto and one that is now being advanced without electoral mandate or meaningful democratic scrutiny. LFR undermines the rights to privacy, free assembly, and political expression. Mass, suspicionless surveillance has no place in a society that claims to respect fundamental freedoms.

Facial Recognition turns presumption of innocence on its head

Overview

Britain is already one of the most surveilled countries in the world. Under the current government, however, we appear to be entering even more troubling territory. The Home Office consultation indicates plans for a new legal framework that would dramatically expand facial recognition technology across the country. Live facial recognition – rarely seen outside highly authoritarian states such as China – could soon be scanning every town centre, turning everyday public life into a permanent digital police line-up.
