Against all odds, a lone slash title produced in the LJ community (Captive Prince) has made it into the finals of this competition, beating out a multitude of het romances. This excellent story has to overcome one last hurdle in the FINALS. If you have a couple of free seconds, please vote for my friend Freece. Just scroll down to the bottom of this post and click the link. Thank you so much in advance.
Superman/Batman Archive

So...I have this Superman/Batman Archive that I've kept up for years now. I'm seriously thinking of just taking it down for good. I'm tired of paying for it every month, and I'm rather tired of answering email about passwords that can't be reset because Yahoo won't deliver the auto-generated password email, not even into the person's spam folder, apparently. I can't turn off the password generator because then the archive will end up with a ton of robot spam posts.

I'm just not sure it's worth doing this into perpetuity anymore when AO3 is available.

Traditionally (and for over a decade), I've been a serious proponent of pairing-based archives, and I've never thought that it was wise to aggragate all of fandom works into one central archive without backup and side collections. But fandom has changed so drastically, and it's not really a homey place anymore where I think I need to care. The person who was developing the eFiction script that most of the archives use hasn't updated it in ages. Eventually, the script will become completely obsolete, either in form or function, so why keep throwing money at a website that I can't develop myself?

The thing about this S/B collection is that I did get permission to archive some of the older stories of authors who are MIA and that aren't really housed anywhere else. If I shut down the site, access to those stories may cease to exist entirely. Perhaps I shouldn't really care about that at this point. Perhaps I should migrate them as a collection to AO3, but I doubt I'll have the motivation to dedicate the time.

Anyway, everytime I pay the hosting bill I think about this. LOL I wonder if AO3 will ever get out of Beta status, and if the script will ever be made available for ancillary archives, as I believe was originally intended.

Perhaps as I move towards 20 years in fandom, I simply don't care as much as I once did.

Le sigh -- Batman and Robin

So...I never really write Robin, or the batfamily, really, other than Alfred. I just have no reading background in the Batman comics and don't know enough about all the ancillary characters to make the notion of a bunch of kids running around fighting dangerous criminals under the auspices of an obsessive-compulsive make enough sense for me to want to novelize it.

Yet, I've just plotted out two whole stories for my S/B fanzine that feature Dick Grayson. I can't even tell if what I want to do sounds interesting, because I'm so skeptical about whether I can pull off using Dick without falling into a kiddie trope and gagging myself on the tripe. lol

Do you want to help me brainstorm? If I give you two summaries, can you give me uses of Dick within that scenario that would be interesting to you? I'm sort of hoping that I will learn a bunch of little idiosyncrasies about Dick that I didn't know about that will make my writing of him more authentic, without me having to go read a bunch of source material.

So, if you are not doing anything today and Dick is your favorite character -- if you read these scenarios, how would you like to see him handled:

Summary 1:

Dick Grayson forms a plan to prove to Batman that he is ready to fight at his side by solving the mystery of the Metropolis Red-Blue Blur. He figures the best place to start his investigation is by following Lois Lane. (As an aside, I was going to try to hook Dick up with SV version of Impulse -- do Dick and the incarnation of Flash after Wally have a relationship in comics?)

Summary 2:

It seems to Dick Grayson that he has always wanted Clark Kent, since the first time, 10 years ago, when Superman showed him what it felt like to fly without the benefit of a swing or a net. Yet, Clark has never wanted anyone but Bruce. Dick loves his guardian, but he knows better than anyone that Bruce is incapable of loving Clark the way he deserves. He knows just as well that Clark will never love anyone but Bruce. Then, one day, a possibility presents itself. What if Dick could go back--back before there was a Bruce and a Clark. Back to when there was just...Clark, and his heart was free to find someone else to love? Someone who could love him like he deserved. Someone like himself, who would be old enough to compete with Bruce on his own level.

Soo...insight and ideas would be welcome. :)

Not really slash, more gen than anything but if you prefer to see it that way you can.

Why would this be posted to the Steve/Danny pairing-specific slash comm? Why is the author listing Steve/Danny as the pairing if THERE IS NO PAIRING??

What do gen ficcers in this fandom have against posting to gen comms? The reviewer pretty much despised the movie, but how can I take him seriously when his review neglected the first basic premise of robots: Giant Robots are Cool and Interesting by Definition. The movie doesn't have to be good. If it has giant robots, it gets a pass. Silly reviewer. Next, he's going to want to hold Godzilla movies to an arthouse standard.

When an author writes a crossover, she typically takes the tenets of each universe as true and mixes them together. For example, if I crossed Stargate and Highlander, I'd come up with a scenario where the Game was going on behind the scenes at some point in the future where the stargates have been discovered.

Some universes, however, are really not compatible. They are analogous to combining two separate planets.

That's the trouble you have with crossing the Marvel and DC universes. They are both set in the world, but the worlds are different. They are completely different realities, timelines, versions etc. If you're going to cross them, you really have to develop a pretext. You can't simply pluck one or two characters out of one universe and stick them in the other as if they exist there. I mean, you can, but it makes no SENSE.

STOP PUTTING TONY STARK IN THE DC UNIVERSE!!!

Effing PLEASE. Best way to ruin a particularly good read: do something that breaks the internal consistency of the story.

Marvel and DC have two different government structures. Mutants are feared and often hunted in Marvel. There is no Gotham City or Metropolis in Marvel. In Marvel, Stark Industries is the top tech company and Tony Stark the dissolute playboy. You can't just insert him into DC!!!!

I think if I read another story with Tony Stark randomly inserted into the DC Universe I'm going to...mewl very, very LOUDLY.

/rant

Do you think a literate 8th grader would be unable to comprehend these words?

I'm really curious because I'm currently in a heated battle with one of my copyeditors who seems to want me to write like some hypothetical 8th grade-level everyman who doesn't know the definition of "perception." I'm not sure what for about this hypothetical illiterate 8th grader of whom she speaks, but when I was in 8th grade, I most certainly could define those words.

I'm thinking my vocabulary and her vocabulary should never meet in a dark alley for a fight.

In any case, $125,000+ in student loans says that I'm not, under any circumstances, going to start writing like her hypothetical 8th grader.

What is so interesting about that? We live family life every day. Why watch a show about it? It's the same thing over and over again. Middle America is so damn boring and has no imagination. How does Modern Family compare with the creativity of Fringe or Walking Dead or Justified or even Supernatural.

How can some sitcom guy beat out the guy who plays Walter on Fringe (Denathor from LoTR). That guy is effing amazing. He plays two completely different characters, and you would swear they are not even the same person, he's so good. And one of the characters he plays is crazy, and the other is scary. He's fabulous. What do we have going on with Modern Family, is it another show about a fat middle aged guy scratching his ass and farting while his obnoxious kids and put-upon wife run around trying to keep him happy? Even the title sounds boring.

And they canceled The Chicago Code. Good grief.
