Greensboro, N.C. (July 25)Â - For the sixth consecutive season, the MIT baseball program has been honored by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) with the Team Academic Excellence Award, which is presented by Sports Attack. For the 2023-24 season, the Engineers posted an overall team GPA of 3.77 on a 4.0 grading scale, including seven student-athletes who boasted a perfect 4.0.
Â
Teams from every level of college and high school baseball were recognized with this year's award as eligible teams had to post a 3.0 team GPA on a 4.0 scale for the entire 2023-24 academic year. The ABCA established the award in the 2015-16 season.
Â
Over 350 high school programs and more than 470 collegiate programs were recognized with this year's award.
Â
Academically the Engineers had 20 NEWMAC Academic All-Conference members, which led the league. Additionally, senior
Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) became the second player in program history to be a three-time College Sports Communicators Academic All-American as he earned Third Team honors in 2024. Graduate student
Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) earned Second Team Academic All-America honors for the first time in his career.
The American Baseball Coaches Association has a long tradition of recognizing the achievements of baseball coaches and student-athletes. The ABCA/Rawlings All-America Teams are the nation's oldest, founded in 1949, and the ABCA Awards Program also includes the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Awards, the ABCA/ATEC Regional & National Coaches of the Year and several other major awards such as the ABCA Hall of Fame and the Dave Keilitz Ethics in Coaching Award.
