Thrive: Maximizing Well-Being in the Age of AI
Purchase options and add-ons
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a powerful general-purpose technology that is reshaping the modern economy, but misperceptions about AI stand in the way of harnessing it for the betterment of humanity. In Thrive, Ravi Bapna and Anindya Ghose counter the backlash by showcasing how AI is positively influencing the aspects of our daily lives that we care about most: our health and wellness, relationships, education, the workplace, and domestic life. In the process the authors help explain the underlying technology and give people the agency they need to shape the debate around how we should regulate AI to maximize its benefits and minimize its risks.
Bringing over two decades of experience with cutting-edge research, consulting, executive coaching, and advising to bear on the subject, Bapna and Ghose demystify the technology of AI itself. They offer a novel “House of AI” framework that encompasses traditional analytics, generative AI, and fair and ethical deployment of AI. Using examples from everyday life, they showcase how the modern AI-powered ecosystem fundamentally improves the emotional, physical, and material well-being of regular people across the globe. Thrive’s mission is to educate the public about AI, shape realistic expectations, and foster informed discussions about a fast-emerging AI-shaped society.

An insightful, informative and entertaining book that demystifies AI for the layperson
Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2024On November 30th, 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT, and we all now realize the world will not be the same ever since. AI is transforming almost every aspect of our lives. So what exactly is AI -- what are the technologies underlying AI, and how is it being used? What does it mean for our jobs, our lives and our future? While a lot of us are enthusiastic, some of us are uneasy -- will AI help or hurt humanity? "Thrive" by professors Ravi Bapna and Anindya Ghose is a timely book that addresses these issues based on rigorous academic research, that is nevertheless presented in an accessible and engaging manner.
The book discusses a variety of examples of how AI is being used to transform how we date, find work, take care of our health, and secure our homes, among other topics. On the question of whether AI will benefit or harm humanity, the book argues convincingly in favor of AI being a net benefit to humanity. But to benefit and thrive from AI, we need to understand and embrace AI in our lives and our work. This book is a great starting guide and companion on our quest to understand AI better.
Often, key ideas behind AI applications and underlying technologies are buried in highly technical academic papers or inaccessible industry case studies. A key strength of the book is that it uses engaging examples to illustrate key ideas, and demystifies important jargon that is essential to understanding how AI works and how it is applied to solve real world problems -- such as: how dating apps use latent dimensions help match users or flag offensive messages, and how Airbnb uses latent Dirichlet association to flag a participant's intent to commit fraud. The examples discussed in this book can provide interesting material to brainstorm and kickstart AI initiatives in your company or nonprofit.
Overall, given the massive impact of AI on white collar work, this is a timely and essential book for non-technical readers in business, finance, law, and other white-collar and creative professions.

Bridging Theory and Practice: Takeaways from "Thrive: Maximizing Well-Being in the Age of AI"
Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2024Thrive presents a masterful blend of scholarly insight and accessible prose, making complex AI concepts both comprehensible and compelling. As someone who used to work in academia and now working in tech, I find the book's practical orientation particularly valuable. The authors' emphasis on data engineering as a critical foundation resonates strongly with my own experiences---too often, companies rush to implement AI solutions without proper data preparation. Furthermore, the book's balanced approach to ethical considerations is especially relevant for those of us developing AI solutions.
What makes "Thrive" special is its ability to spark meaningful conversations across generations: My son (a high-schooler) found the book a joy to read, "this book shows how AI can actually improve our daily lives---finding jobs, even helping people date, without getting into the nitty-gritty of coding". Kudos to the authors! They've created something rare: a book that can sit comfortably on both a professor's shelf and a teenager's desk.

Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2025I recently finished reading Thrive, and I have to say, it’s one of those rare books that made complex concepts feel accessible and relevant to everyday life. As someone with no technical background, I now have an understanding of what goes behind the apps and tools that seem to run my life.
What struck me immediately was how the authors, with years of research and expertise, took some of the most complicated ideas in AI and explained them in a way that felt both simple and engaging. I found myself understanding the intricacies of AI without feeling overwhelmed. Their personal experience and anecdotes made the reading very relatable and interesting.
One of the most rewarding outcomes for me personally is how this book has empowered me to have informed discussions with my tech-savvy children. Before reading this book, I felt I was always playing catch-up in conversations about AI, but now i am sure I will be able to engage with anyone on a deeper level!
For anyone like me who’s curious about AI but intimidated by its complexity, this book is a fantastic must read.

Very well-researched and Accessible
Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2024Thrive is a fantastic read and lists how AI can aid the society in positive ways across many different areas, from healthcare, to dating and even career fulfillment. The book is a breath of fresh air given the sensationalism around AI. The authors lay out the potential in many different areas on how AI is changing/ or has already changed our lives. Thrive is particularly valuable for its focus on the ethical and societal implications of AI. While AI undoubtedly presents challenges and potential risks, the media often tends to overhype these negative aspects, creating a distorted public perception. Sensational headlines about AI taking over jobs, invading privacy, or even becoming sentient can lead to unnecessary fear and anxiety. The authors clearly remind us that AI is a tool, and like any tool, its impact depends on how it is used. The authors focus on the benefits and show many examples of how AI is developed and deployed in a responsible and beneficial manner across many different firms (so many cool examples from Airbnb, Uber to the many different products everyone uses on a daily basis).
I strongly recommend Thrive to managers in any organization and in any capacity, and to students (definitely a must-read for business school students) who should enter the age of AI without feeling overly concerned about media hype!

How is AI thriving our lives? A must read!
Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2025This book is a wonderful and detailed illustration of how AI can affect our daily lives. The term "AI" has been showing up in headlines and serves as one of the hottest topics for the modern economy. Many have taken it granted that AI is definitely changing our lives. However, many times when I engage in conversations with strangers on how exactly AI affects their lives, the answers are blurred. In this book, the authors have provided concrete examples and explanations on how and to what extent AI has affected, is affecting, and will affect our lives. The topics range from finding love, building personal connections, learning, career building, smart home, and organization implementation- basically, everything about our lives.
I like the writing style, with concrete examples and a context being created. The authors have put a lot of effort into connecting real-life scenarios with AI techniques and explanations, balancing the need to illustrate the key ideas and lay out the scientific reasonings. Even though you may not be tech-savvy, you can still enjoy the read and understand how AI will help us thrive!
