(I) STUDENT UPWARD MOBILITY INITIATIVE 2024 REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS

The Urban Institute is launching the
Student Upward Mobility Initiative and the request for proposals is now open! The mission of this multi-year initiative is to develop an understanding of the skills and competencies in PK–12 education that educators and policymakers can use to shape practices, programs, interventions, and broader systems change to support students’ upward mobility.

Proposals should develop new or improved PK–12 measures or connect measures of PK–12 skills and competencies to economic mobility across the domains of academic achievement, “noncognitive” factors, health and well-being, social capital, and career preparation. The Urban Institute expects to fund $3 million in research grants, ranging from $50,000 to $500,000, through this year’s request for proposals.

All interested applicants must submit a mandatory letter of inquiry by Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at 5:00 PM ET. You can find more information
here. Questions can be directed to SUMI@urban.org.

(II) LEARNING CURVE 2024 CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The
Learning Curve is an essay series that aims to bring new data to timely policy debates by blending academic rigor with accessibility and a focus on solutions. The Learning Curve is now seeking proposals to analyze the effects of local education policies and programs enacted in the last five years, with a special interest in the effects of policies implemented with federal relief funds (ESSER and HEERF) provided during and following the pandemic.

Potential authors should think of the Learning Curve essay as an early look at the effects of the policy or program, providing available data in a timely fashion. Selected authors will receive a $2,500 honorarium and technical and editorial support from Urban Institute staff members to turn their proposal into an essay published on
urban.org.

Proposals will be reviewed in two waves, with an initial deadline of Sunday, March 31, 2024, and a final deadline of Friday, May 31, 2024. You can find more details in the
call for proposals.
