Lovelyz First Listen Thoughts

Having never watched or listened to Lovelyz (but I keep meaning too) I thought I'd do so today and write down my thoughts as I go through the MV's by them (and then maybe the albums depending on how much I get done today.)

Post writing some of this, it's getting super long and kind of heavy on the media front and I would like to appologise for that, hopefully it's not too bad, each song is seperated with a bold letter first and spaced out.

First up is 'Good Night Like Yesterday'

So my initial reaction was a) I really like the synth beats in the background and b) I love how low the song started, a lot of kpop has quite high tones for vocals (with sopranos seeming to be favoured as vocalists). As the song progresses and it rises it feels like a natural progression and works very well, the song seems to suit all of there vocal types (from this MV no one seemed to be struggling to sing it seemed very relaxed and lovely, befitting the name of the group).

Now as I'm not a musician or vocalist (and actually have limited knowledge here) I'll go back to what I do know which is this song gave me a warm fuzzy feeling (and then ripped that away by ending, how inconsiderate) and now I'm relaxed and want to listen to more (which is the point I guess). The aesthetics of the video were beautiful and highlighted the girls voices and let them shine as the innocent/cute concept that is so popular in korea. It didn't bounce everywhere I wasn't feeling overwhelmed by the video, it seemed to rise as the song rose and works for it. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next song.

Second up is 'Candy Jelly Love' (will it be a bop with a name like that? I'm curious)

I am instantly happy with this song, I love me a bop and the background music alone with its faster paced synth beats is more bop like than 'Good Night Like Yesterday' and I love it. Again the song is starting with those glorious lower notes and I am loving this so much, it makes the transition to the chorus so much more powerful and the bridge stand out more. The other part I really loved was the harmonisation on the chorus, it was just lovely, when they sang together it just sounded wonderful and very relaxed but still more powerful like a chrous.

The way 'Candy Jelly Love' itself was said was a bit too cute for me compared to the rest of the song, it stood out and was a little awkward, that being said I loved it. (Also that speaking in English part seemed a little awkward to me, I think because it sounded spoken rather than sung like the rest of the song).

Initially the MV suggested that it was going to be a very typical cute school concept, however, the girls proved me wrong by being themselves and having fun. It looked like they were having a blast filming, the rock paper sissors scene made me laugh and how they were just messing around like they were actually at school and just having a good day was lovely to see. Also I hope they got to eat lots of sweets whilst filming this and had a day off from dieting and all that idol stuff.

Overall the whole thing is highly cute but also very fun (which is really what I'm here for lbr) and the glimpses of choreography I can see also seem fun and bouncy and fit the whole song. (I'm going to watch a live stage super fast to see this fully as I'm actually excited to see it and a live from them).

So I watched this one and it was everything I wanted (this group is everything I wanted I just didn't know I could have it). The choreography is bouncy and fun but actually doable if you're terrible at dancing like I am and they actually looked like they were enjoying themselves. The outfits were cute but not too young (but still not my favourite, except pink is cute). The stage was sweet (and fit with the song super well, maybe even better than the MV...) and the whole thing just works. Also they had such good voices and tones, and it works so well here too (also the fanchants were the cutest thing I am happy).

Okay so third up we have 'Hi~' (and this is a whole seperate era right? a comeback)

(a wiki search tells me this was a repackage of the first album, and I can see it didn't do badly on the albums chart or the singles chart) (i'm excited)

Honestly as soon as this started my first thought was this was bopper than I expected and it took me almost until the second chorus to fully embrace it (but then I did and now I love it.) It also reminded me of Gfriend and April and some of the MVs I've seen from them (but this style is popular in Korea) and I'm curious to see the choreography overall.

The song itself seemed a little higher than its predecessors (but that might just be me, or the beats) but still suited the girls. Overall the song was quite a bop (although the lyrics seemed sad and hopeful at the same time and I couldn't quite get a grasp on what it wanted me to feel?). There was more of a retro feeling to this song (which I loved bc I'm basically a grandma at this point) and the vibe of the song was actually more mellow (for me) than the beat < I keep coming back to this beat it really through me I'm not sure why but I did enjoy the song, I just didn't see where the synth beats came in to use, that being said when I listen to this again with the live I might enjoy it a bit more.

Also, the aesthetic game was strong in this MV and I am officially a fan of the strong aesthetic game, and therefore this MV (what can I say I'm fickle and pleased by things that look nice). There was something soft and lovely about the whole thing and I love how much fun they seem to have when filming these, it makes the whole thing special.

So I just watched this (with a cup of tea I'm only human and tea is my hot drink weakness, as well as hot chocolate but that's a treat) live performance and I did like this more the second time around. The beat was less noticable in the live version and I could think about the cute choreography as well (and those outfits are adorable, I love the tops in particular). It does still remind me of Gfriend and there love of circles too (not in a bad way!) and it felt like this song was trying to market to that audience more.

This song is cutesier than the previous releases (and maybe that's why I'm less enamoured with it on the first listen) and they sound slightly sharper (a sign they could be straining a little) on the live vocals. I do love the fanchants and cheers though so I'm glad this seemed to do well (I think it charted better than 'Candy Jelly Love' which I'm not surprised at) for them considering it was only the second song they released.

Honestly it's still kind of a bop (a more mellow one I think) and I do like it, and after more listens I'm sure I will love it even more.

Next up, song the fourth is 'Shooting Star' (which I believe is a prerelease and I'm hoping for a more mellow ballad - I reserve the right to dream and hope - and a return to the more natural vocal style which is honestly epic and I am digging)

So wiki tells me this is that start of a new era and the first thing I notice is the glitter and the mellow synth piano and I am happy.

As soon as the beat started I was a little confused, the beat told me it was a bop, the melody and singing told me it was a ballad, my musical skill isn't this good. I was happy to hear the return of those beautiful lower comfortable singing voices and I hope the next couple of songs maintain them, they just sound so much more natural and comfortable which makes me enjoy the song that bit more (but this is a personal preference and I respect not everyone might feel this way.) Again the harmonisation is some next level stuff and sounds amazing, they should be famous for that alone, when they sing together they sound like a group rather than a bunch of individuals.

I really like the aesthetic of the video (suprising no one I'm sure), it was mellow and beautiful and honest books are my one true love in life (then my cat and chocolate) so I was happy to see the addition of them. The final clip with the pages showing the writing was just a lovely touch and I thought actually a clever way of promoting the whole ep and reminding people this was the prerelease and there was more to come.

There's nothing particularly new and original about this song and release, however, it's a beautiful song that's done well and the MV is beautiful and the girls are beautiful. I enjoyed listening to this and I'm excited about the main song now! (The point of the pre release has been achieved.)

Up next is the fifth song 'Ah-Choo' which I understand (thanks wikipedia) is there most popular song (or at least considered the break through song for the group)

So first reaction, I love the opening, that piano just building up to the song was everything I love in a good song. The beats felt much more natural this time when they came in and fit with the song for me to the point where they blended in and that was not what I was thinking about (which should be a goal). The whole song felt uplifting and quite bubbly, it felt like the kind of song aimed at dancing too and enjoying, the sort of song tween me would have been so happy to listen to 100% of the time (and slightly older me is happy to jam to most of the time).

The MV itself is clever, the first half didn't connect overall to the song for me but then when the guy (from infinite? wiki again, i love it) came in the whole storyline itself made much more sense and the actions linked together. The aesthetic levels were once again maxed out (I approve) and the whole thing just fit together and again they seemed like they were having a fun time together when filming this. I also loved the post it notes (it's just such a fun way of conveying emotion quickly in MVs). The uniforms reminded me a bit of Pristin's 'We Like' live stages (again not bad, just different to what I'm personally used to.)

The singing itself was everything I wanted, cute but not in a forced unnatural way, in a key that clearly suited there voices and the harmonisation (clearly this is one of my things) was on point. They sounded great, the song was catchy. I love me a bop and this delivered everything I could ask of it. I'm excited to watch a live stage of this and see how it goes live!

Considering watching this was only the second time I'd heard it I felt like I wanted to sing along and dance with them I was surprised (happily so) this song is so much catchier and bouncier than I initially anticipated.

The live reflected how much fun this song is, the vocals sounded fantastic and like they could all comfortably sing it (which is good), the harmonisation was just as fantastic so I was happy there. The stage itself didn't stand out to me, which is okay, just the amount of fun the fans chanting were having is what I'll really take away from this. And how flowly they all managed to look (this must be a kpop skill, it's amazing).

Overall the thing I've really fallen in love with watching these is the way the group meshes together, it doesn't feel that artificial, it feels very natural and like they're meant to be together somehow. Maybe it's due to how in tune they are on the stage, but I hope they are fantastic friends in real life (I'm sure they are).

Song number six is 'For You' which sounds cute (fits in with the image they present too)

I think this might be my favourite song by them so far, it gave me that warm fuzzy feeling I love from a good song.

I feel like a lot of what I want to say about this song might be a bit repetitive so I'm sorry about that. The song itself is beautiful and has this warm feel too it (honestly it kind of reminds me of something I'd listen to on the beach on a nice sunny day whilst reading a book) and the lyrics stood out to me this time. That warm feeling is reminiscent of friendship which is backed up by the lyrics of this song and it is honestly such a lovely song.

The melody itself is warm and the beats don't detract from the song (I'm not sure I like it quite as much as Ah Choo but it's still beautiful). The vocals here are what really shine for me, the warmth coming through is just lovely. The fact that it's that slightly lower harmonisation again is just wonderful and they sound so comfortable in this range I love it.

Overall the MV is gorgeous, I love the aesthetic style they've gone for here. It's a bit different from some of the previous ones they've used but still extremely lovely and works very well for this style.

The choreography really suprised me for this live stage, it was so much more powerful and impactful than I was expecting (I'm not sure why this seems to have been a theme for them). The song itself really stood out and shone (which was nice) but it does feel more summery or even spring like than winter, I was a bit suprised about when it was released.

However, all the girls seem very happy performing this one and the stage itself made me smile and the vocals were beautiful, the dancing was on point and the whole thing was incredibly impressive for me and I look forward to the next video.

Ready for song number seven already, this is 'Destiny' which appears to have been the only comeback they had in 2016 (although I guess 'For You' was right at the end of 2015 and the beginning of 2016, however, this still doesn't seem very frequent considering they debuted in 2014, that being said they don't seem to be doing too badly so far)

Honestly this song surprised me, in terms of the musical structure itself it was a big step away from what I'd grown to expect from these girls so far. I liked it though. The violin's in the background gave me James Bond vibes and the song overall reminds me of an OST (and something else but I cannot for the life of me think of it, my brain does not want to place this) and would work so well in any soundtrack (it's almost a shame Korea doesn't use songs randomly in its TV shows, I can see this one would have been amazing in a lot of the shows I've seen).

The vocals were more what I was expecting, the harmonisation was amazing, and I love that lower pitching. There's one point where (I think her name is Kei?) one of them goes super low and it just gave me goosebumps, it was beautiful. I'm in love with this lower more soft vocal mixed with the more upbeat vintage sound, they make it work so well.

In terms of the MV it was a little different to what I was expecting, but more a step towards there earlier stuff than 'For You' was. Not that this is bad, and the girls look beautiful and sound beautiful (that's what I'm here for). However, it's not as different as 'For You' was but it's still different to the earlier MVs they release, it felt closer to the pre releases in terms of aesthetic than the previous title track MVs.

If they performed this song at any point in suits or with a James Bond theme then I will need to find it. But honestly, this was more the choreography I was expecting from 'For You' that being said it was honestly flawless and went with the song so well. It was different from the other earlier releases but I liked it and it sounds (from the fanchants) like they've got a fairly solid fan base at this point so they're doing well and I'm happy for them.

The live vocals sounded amazing and the harmonisation once again was amazing, the stage itself was honestly beautiful and I thought it highlighted the unique nature of the song. It all worked really well and I am excited about listening to the next song (but also this ep, seems like the start of a new sound and era for them and honestly I'm curious about where it's going to go).

Song number eight is 'WoW!' which I am now curious to listen to (will it be a bop, will it be reminiscent of destiny, the possibilities are endless)

As the first part (I'm not sure if it was the hook or the chorus, but I think chorus) came on I wasn't initially as wowed as I could have been, I was confused, this was not the sound I was expecting. It didn't fit into any of the categories I'd put Lovelyz in so far, and didn't feel to connect to any of the previous title tracks, but then the verse came and I fell in love. By the end I'm actually quite into the hooky/chorus bit and I think I might now have to learn how to 'sing' it myself so I can sing along when I'm blasting this one.

The MV is what stood out for me with this release, it's so fun and bright, and honestly I loved the references to the earlier songs (like that cute gold glitter dust from 'Shooting Star' and the stickers from 'Ah Choo' it was a great way to tie this newer sound (which I am digging) to the earlier songs.

Within the song that amazing harmonisation that I dig was there along with the beautiful low vocals I'm starting to fully associate with them. The whole thing works together and I am here for this. I'm curious to see what the live performance is like, will it be as beautiful as this has turned out to be. And what about the next (and currently) final song...

This is the sort of song that grows on you the more you listen to it and hear how clever and detailed it is (or at least that's how I'm feeling now after listening to this song a second time and the dance was so much fun (the slow mo running was genius and whoever came up with that deserves a raise). Overall I kind of want to learn the whole thing, I'm a bit sad I miss the powerful dances of the earlier releases (but at the same time this is still brilliant and I love it).

The live vocals are exactly what I've grown to expect here and I am so happy I have it again, they sound amazing and it seems like they're having fun (I hope they are). The stage itself is amazing and shows how different this song is compared to the earlier releases as well, however, it also seems very different (more boppy) to 'Destiny' as well and more of a return to the fun side rather than the more mature side they showcased.

Ready for the final song so far, 'Now, We' which I believe is a repackage of the 'WoW!' album, I'm curious to see if this will be more like 'Destiny' or 'WoW!'

This song is so lovely and gentle but has that synth bop beat to it and reminds me of this lovely vintage retro feel and I love it. The song is slightly higher this time but it still sounds lovely and the music itself is more instantly likable that 'WoW!' for me. I knew as soon as it started I would love it and yes I did. The song has a lovely mature sound but is still sweet and cute, there's something very warming about listening to these girls singing this song. The harmonisation was there (yay!) and the vocals sounded amazing, I'm very curious to see this one as a live stage as I'm keen to see the dancing but also to hear them singing this.

The MV aesthetic was stunning and you can see how far they've come stylistically, as well as hear it, and it's been beautiful to watch. The colours used in this are what initially stood out to me, it's beautifully done and very clever with the warmer undertones to cool colours used and the complimentary colours. It worked very well with the song as well. Using the three primary colours with the pastel undertones, bless whoever came up with this idea it's beautiful.

This live stage was just wonderful to watch, it reaffirmed much of what I had already realised, these girls are extremely talented and can sing and dance beautifully. This song is just lovely to listen to and I'm glad I could experience it having listened to the other songs in order, it can make me appreciate this all the more. I can here the impact of 'Candy Jelly Love' on this but also 'Destiny' it feels like Lovelyz have found the style that makes them shine. This song is just beautiful and suits the girls voices so much.

Overall the choreography suited the song, they had powerful moments when they were needed and more relaxed gentle choreography in fitting parts, again this has been an excellent evolution to see so far. I do miss some of the suprised I got with the first songs but maybe I just expect them to be flawless so they are and I'm satisfied.

So that's it for Lovelyz so far, I look forward to listening to the album releases and following the upcoming comeback, honestly this has been a blast and I'm so excited for more of them. They're clearly talented, I like the musical style. I'm ready for this.
