Prosfic Bingo: K is for The Keeper of Secrets, R is for Reconsiderations...
H is for Head Start, X is for X-Ray-Ted
I have four more shortish fics to write about today. There are a few longer stories that I hope to read before the end of this bingo round, but I haven't started on them yet.
I first read The Keeper of Secrets by Jackie Thomas way back in March after macklingirl added it to her bingo card. As was the case with Till a Bullet Stopped His Song, I had already filled the relevant square on my own bingo card, but I liked the fic so much that I saved it to reread during the second round. This is a wonderful fic. I won't say much about it, to avoid spoilers, but it has excellent characterizations and a lot of understated yet vivid emotion. 3,482 words. B/D slash. Particularly recommended.
Reconsiderations by PFL (msmoat) is another very good fic. Despite the fact that they have less room for interaction between the Lads, I'm fond of backstory fics. This fic is about half backstory, with sections for both Doyle and Bodie. I found the latter especially memorable; I liked the motivations PFL imagined for each step in Bodie's pre-CI5 career. 6,795 words. B/D slash. Particularly recommended.
Much of Head Start by HG is given over to conversation, and a good part of the conversation felt circular to me, looping back on itself and lacking a clear progression. I found that frustrating and it made it hard for me to enjoy the fic. There was a good ending, though, which balanced out my feelings somewhat. 7,069 words. B/D slash.
Having few options for the letter X, I read both X-Ray-Ted by HG and the preceding fic in the series, Gruff 'n' Grim. These fics are told from the points of view of two teddy bears whose lives intersect with the Lads'. I liked a few bits, mostly in Gruff 'n' Grim, but on the whole, these fics were not my thing. 6,557 words. B/D slash with teddy bear slash.
