The Problem with Belief
The Insidious Nature of Christianity and Trump
Recently, I asked the question on Facebook, “Did God violate his own law when he impregnated Mary? Deuteronomy 22:22-24”
“If a man is found sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel. If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death.” Deut. 22:22-24
For those who don’t know, Mary was ‘pledged’ or betrothed to Joseph. In Jewish culture at that time, that meant they were considered to be married.
The answer to that question isn’t just about whether God violated his own laws or not: that question won’t easily be answered, even by theologians.
But apologists will argue that Deuteronomy says “a man:" if “a man” lies with a another man’s wife, then they both should be punished. For some reason, God’s rules do not apply to him.
But that’s not really the issue at hand. The deeper issue is whether Christians themselves would actually even look at the verses in Deuteronomy and consider whether there is a problem: could those, so entrenched in this system of beliefs, ever question their god?
Could they accuse him of violating his own law?
Cognitive Dissonance prevents people from being able to accept truth that conflicts directly with what they believe. It is what keeps Christians from seeing—from the Bible—the truth about Jesus.
The Bible makes the case repeatedly that Jesus is One with God. The book also shows clearly that God ordered the deaths of ‘children and babies.’ There, in black-and-white on the pages of the book they use, is the ugly truth about their savior: Jesus is a baby killer.
Cognitive dissonance has prevented Christians from seeing and accepting the truth that is right in front of them. This mental roadblock has been created and maintained by a set of beliefs taught to them since childbirth. And the beliefs stand in the way of them accepting the verifiable facts.
And that is a major problem in America.
Holding onto beliefs in spite of all evidence is exactly what is happening in many parts of our nation today. The sitting president of the United States is using that same concept to keep himself in office. Our people’s inability to face the truth about God is mirrored by many who are unwilling to see the truth about Donald Trump.
The endless lies, deceit, treachery, abuse and more tolerated by those who support Trump looks and sounds an awful lot like what those who support God say when you show them scripture that points to their god murdering babies.
What Christians deny seeing about God is what MAGA and Republicans deny seeing about Trump: the ugly truth.
Trump’s name is scattered across the Epstein files more than a million times: there is clear, convincing evidence that Trump physically and sexually assaulted children, yet those who follow him refuse to accept the truth printed on the page. Just as Christians refuse to see the truth printed on the pages of the Bible about their god.
The facts don’t seem to matter: truth is irrelevant.
What remains—what must remain—is the belief, protected deep in minds, safe from facts and honest queries.
You can lay the Epstein Files out in public, but MAGA and the GOP will refuse to see the truth.
You can lay the Bible out in public, but Christians refuse to see the truth.
Because of the beliefs they hold, nothing can penetrate the wall of consciousness they‘ve built up to keep those beliefs intact. They simply cannot handle the truth.
The problem with beliefs is that they cannot be overcome easily: people are simply too entrenched in their ways of thinking to even consider any alternative. As we become more divided, those ignoring the facts become more obtuse. They become completely unwilling and unable psychologically to accept something outside of their belief system, something that could crush them.
Each generation that programs Americans to accept God as good, as trustworthy, as loving, as a savior repeats the conditioning the led to MAGA being so easily led astray by Trump, and led away from the truth. Teaching our people to accept falsehoods as truth, to be tolerant of rape, and to accept murder as righteousness will not lead to America to becoming the ‘home of the free and the land of the brave.’
If we continue to promote teaching our young that the perpetrator is the hero, we doom those same children to an ugly future, indeed.
Over history, Christians have rewritten the story of God to present Jesus as loving, compassionate, and gentle. A killer in sheep’s clothing.
Over recent history, Trump has been rewriting his own history: he now ‘won’ the 2020 Presidential Election, saved us from the evil Democrats, and personally saved thousands of children from Jeffrey Epstein.
The problem with belief is when you believe in lies, it’s next to impossible to ever see the truth.
