Tutorial: Manga (Misc.)

1.) Okay, first, we have to choose a base. For this tutorial, something with light, crisp colours works well, like the one I'm using. (Coloured and cropped by

foldingcrane texture in the background by wicked_avis ).

2.) To make the base a bit more vibrant, I'm going to enhance the colours. First off, a Levels Layer (Layers >> New Adjustment Layer >> Levels), with the following settings: Input Levels - 68, 1.00, 255.

3.) Now, to mess with the colouring, such that it becomes much more vibrant but not too dark at the same time. Note: These values are not definite, change to suit your icon! :D Create a new Selective Colouring Layer (Layers >> New Adjustment Layer >> Selective Colour), and input the following settings.

Settings: RED: -100, +46, +56, -26 YELLOW: -100, -4, -74, +23 BLUE: +100, +46, -53, -55 NEUTRALS: -27, -7, +25, +35

4.) Now your base is a bit too bright. Let's fix that up by duplicating your base and dragging it to the top, now set it to Multiply @ 50%.

5.) Take make the colours stand out more, I added a Hue/Saturation Layer (Layers >> New Adjustment Layer >> Hue/Saturation), and upped the master saturation by +20.

6.) Now that the base is all nice and shiny, it's time to go to the icon. First I added this texture and set it to Multiply @ 100%. (Texture unknown, let me know if it's yours!)

7.) To negate it, I duplicated the base and set it to Screen @ 50%.

8.) -OPTIONAL- I then created a Brightness/Contrast Layer (Layers >> New Adjustment Layer >> Brightness/Contrast) and lowered the contrast by -3.

9.) Paste this texture by toybirds above everything else, and set it to Multiply @ 100%.

10.) Duplicate your base, again, and now, set it to Soft Light @ 50%.

11.) Now, create a new layer and flood fill it with a dark blue (I used #040743), and set it to Exclusion @ 36%.

12.) This time, duplicate your base and set it to Normal @ 20%.

13.) Give your icon a warmer tone by adding a Hue/Saturation Layer (Layers >> New Adjustment Layer >> Hue/Saturation), and increasing the master saturation by +20.

14.) Using the font Courier (T1), I typed in the words 'reach out', and used the Free Transform Tool to rotate it such that it fell right in the middle of the icon.

15.) To create the drop-shadow effect, I duplicated the previous text layer and changed the font colour to white. Then I nudged it a bit such that the black showed through to create the shadow.

Tutorial: Jaejoong/Tohoshinki

1.) Choose your base and edit it so that it doesn't look overly bright or overly dark. (eg. sharpen, blur, brighten, darken) I chose one from dont_be_so_base's DBSK bases. Note: For this base, I duplicated the layer, set it to screen at 60% and then duplicated the layer again and set it to color burn at 40%. Then I merged all three layers.)

2.) Now, to spice up the icon, I added this scratch texture by elliemo, set to screen at 100% opacity. Then, I rotated it -90 degrees, using the Free Transform Tool, and then coloured over in black, the scratches that overlapped his face.

3.) Here's where we mess a bit with the colouring. Generally, these settings can be applied to most icons, but I recommend you play around with the settings till you find something you like.

Create a new Selective Colouring layer (Layer >> Adjustments >> Selective Colour), setting it to Color at 100% opacity.

Settings:

RED: -72, -32, +20, -49

YELLOW: -42, 0, +31, -67

WHITE: +100, -34, -12, -15

NEUTRALS: +6, 0, -28, +6

4.) To make your icon look crisper and for the lines to show up more, duplicate your base layer and drag it to the top. Then, desaturate (Ctrl + Shift + U) and set it to Soft Light at 100% opacity.

4.) The icon's looking a little plain, so I added a light texture by dusty_memories, rotating it 180 degrees and setting it to screen at 50%.
