It has finally become ridiculous not to have a master post for all the (main) rec posts I have. So here we are. Since my OTP is Arthur/Merlin, most everything will be that pairing. Everything is organised alphabetically (except Historical AU, which is by year) unless I did something stupid which I will fix as soon as I notice. I try to keep this as updated as possible so I add things pretty much constantly if I remember and am not being especially lazy. I do frequently forget to add the stars though. For the moment the posts for Fanmix and Fanart are locked simply because I want to organise everything before I unlock (which should hopefully be soon). I'm sorry! Please don't ask me to unlock them, though. I am working on it, I promise :)

Wow, okay, I never meant to stay away so long. I swear, I have no idea how it is already April; feels like January just happened. And I'm super embarrassed that I haven't made a real post since, er, last April, apparently. I have no idea what happened (well, actually, I do but yeah).

Not that this is a real post, exactly. Just a heads up that I am no longer vesperdivum. I've been slowly (so slowly, like, glacial pace) changing my name(s) to thisbirdsflown. I'd been sort of wanting to change it for ages and then when I started falling headfirst into the Skyfall/Bond fandom I figured it was time: I just never really wanted to have a (however accidental) fandom specific username for a fandom I'm active in. So.

And now for a quick update! Not leaving Merlin fandom even a little bit. I don't doubt I'll be the last one standing, and that suits me fine. I've signed up for paperlegends again, and I know, I have the worst track record ever, but I am cautiously optimistic about this year! EVERYONE PLEASE KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED. Nothing better come up between now and then. I really love what I'm doing and I want to post it.

I've also signed up for the 00q_bb, so watch for that as well.

I miss LJ. I miss all of you. I'm occasionally pretty active on tumblr, so if in doubt about my continuing existence, check there (where I am also thisbirdsflown). Hopefully, I'll be uploading a mix soon. Maybe two, if I can finish up at least a bit of another fic I've been tinkering around with for, er, longer than I really want to admit.

I keep disappearing and I'm really sorry about it. Things have been... intense, here, so I hope you can forgive me.

! I meant to post about this ages ago, but I ended up not getting to for reasons. So this is kind of last minute or whatever, but this is also TOO AMAZING TO IGNORE.

Right. So, confession. I hate TV. There are a few shows I love or catch my interest so I end up buying/borrowing/renting/what-have-you all the seasons to marathon, but mostly I just avoid it like the plague. (The only show I actually bother watching when it comes on is Merlin, so.) I hate the noise, I hate the commercials, and frankly I'd rather be reading or doing fandom-y stuff or whatever. Other than Merlin, the only thing I really watch on TV is whatever is on TCM. Because I love old movies. In a really embarrassing gush-y sort of way. WHICH IS WHY I AM PIMPING THIS. Casablanca is hands down one of my very favorite movies OF ALL TIME. THERE ARE NO ADEQUATE WORDS TO EXPRESS THIS LOVE. And tomorrow (in select theatres all over the US) IT IS BEING SHOWN. ON A BIG SCREEN. I went the first time they did this (about a month ago) and I am SO FUCKING HAPPY THEY ARE DOING IT AGAIN. IT WAS INCREDIBLE. This movie owns my soul, guys. YOU SHOULD ALL GO. YOU KNOW. IF YOU CAN. :D :D :D

In which Morgana erases memories for a living, Merlin and Arthur meet for (what they believe to be) the first time, and Gwen remembers everything.

I'd been avoiding it because of the movie prompt. Don't get me wrong, I adore Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but I only have one real squick that is a bit triggery for reasons, and that is mind fuckery/mind control/all that jazz. For me, erasing someone's memory falls very much in there. It has taken me a really really stupid amount of time to get around to this, which is really sad since this is absolutely gorgeous.

Everyone in this was spot on. There was so much hurt underlining everything but without dragging it down or tainting its sweet spots. Or drowning out all of the love and good intentions. And Gwen. This is very much the Gwen I know and love. My heart hurt for her, the way she just quietly supported everyone, even though they didn't really know it. The way she kept everyone's secrets for them and kept their pain so they wouldn't have to and the way she just loved everyone through it all.

I really love multiple POV's and non-linear storytelling. Add to that perfect pacing and beautiful fully dimensioned characters and angst and a real eye for detail and damn, so in love. Just awesome. Also really loved the way music was worked into the story. Everything about this just worked. And in the end I was left with so much hope. For Arthur and Merlin. For everyone. If you ever gave this a miss for any reason, I suggest looking at it again. This left me with all the feelings. And a need to keysmash at someone. <3

This was beautifully done. There are two versions, one in English and one is Welsh, but to me, the words are very secondary. You don't really need them to understand what is going on, but they do definitely add to the overall appreciation. I am in love with the style, the way the story is shown and the absolutely perfect parallel in the last two frames. Brilliant concept, beautiful execution and also, really fucking hot. I adore this.

I just finished reading this and am completely blown away. There is such an understated beauty to this fic. Percival made my heart ache just a little. His devotion and love is such a quiet immovable feeling that bleeds through into his every thought and action. And Merlin is perfect as sheriff, full of guilt and sadness but still so completely lovely. The overall feel of this fic was sort of hushed, and such a perfect fit for the prompt. I love that. Not over the top, never felt forced, just perfectly gentle. I don't want to say too much, just trust me on this. You will not regret reading this. So lovely.

I really wasn't going to rec for this fest, I'm busy and tired and didn't want to feel guilty if I didn't have time or energy to do some (which is actually why I almost never rec fest works), but this hit all my buttons in the best way possible, so I absolutely had to, just this once.

I just got my first sunburn of the summer and it is looking pretty awful. I have been working outside the entire afternoon and now I resemble a lobster. It's beautiful :(
As a bonus the air conditioning is out in the half of my house with the kitchen and everything so I am camping out in my icebox bedroom with a mostly frozen water bottle until I cool down a bit. So damn hot. Definitely was 99℉ earlier, though it sure felt hotter.

I don't tend to rec Gwaine/Merlin all that often (in comparison to Arthur/Merlin which I rec all the time), but last night (this morning, whatever) I read this all in one go because I absolutely couldn't put it down. It is seriously epic. It is so perfectly beautiful in every way and feeds my overwhelming love for epistolary fics.

The romance between Gwaine and Merlin is just lovely. I love their letters and the way they open up to each other somewhat gradually. I love the mutual insecurities between them and the courting. Their romance plays out against a really beautifully fleshed out backdrop of political unrest and court intrigue while Camelot tries to bring Escetia under its power. There are just no words for how much I loved this. Or rather, I could wax poetic about this for several thousand words, easy, but I don't want to spoil any of it for you. Just hurry and read this (if you aren't already!) and enjoy it. It is truly fantastic.

So, yes. I signed up for this supernova nonsuch and then promptly pimped it to several different Merlin comms to share the insanity. I am writing (god help me) an American Civil War au because I have been toying with the idea ever since hermette introduced me to the seriously gorgeous song Poison & Wine by The Civil Wars. As I explained to riventhorn back in (I think) December when she didn't actually talk me out of this even a little bit (like she clearly should have), the reason that my head went there instead of anywhere normal was because something about the song (particularly at the end) brings to mind the music used in Civil War documentaries and therefore made me think "Oh. Oh!" (I have such a thing for the Civil War JFC) (Okay, all wars. What this says about me I never want to know.)

I'm busy today, working on several different things (and emails, I am getting to all my emails today), but I wanted to take a moment to rec a couple things:


★ Ich Hatt Einen Kameraden by amphigoury (warning for graphic violence, blood, major character death - other than that WS :D; Arthur, Merlin, assorted others

I meant to rec this when I first saw it (as with so many things ::sigh::). I nearly didn't click on it because, well, major character death is one of the (very very) few things I tend to avoid. Ultimately my love for WWII won out and I clicked on it anyway. And I'm so very glad I did. Not to say it didn't rip me up and that I wasn't sitting there sniffling like an idiot, because it did and I definitely was. But this was really quite brilliantly done. I loved the sheer amount of detail in each panel. I loved the language barrier and reading the translations, although they weren't completely needed to get the gist of the conversation. If I could really cry like a normal person this would have made me cry. Not just because of how sad it was, but also because of how moving.

And I totally snagged the Merlin wallpaper for my computer for once BB is over and I can go back to finishing up my (stupid) WWII fic that has dragged on for absolutely ever. Inspiration, yeah?

All I Wanna Do Is by neomeruru. Merlin, Arthur WS. This is beautiful. The colors are soft and bright and the likenesses are fantastic. It is gentle and playful and such a beautiful moment between the boys. They look so happy and relaxed it makes my heart ache. I am particularly fond of the background, in this. The mountains, the castle, the clouds, the soft, hazy wildflowers are just gorgeous. It feels like early June. I love it.

I have so much to catch up on I hardly know where to begin! So much awesome has happened and I have up an absolutely terrifying amount of tabs. And it is glorious.

I have been waiting to read derryere's Good News (is on the way) since it was posted and then there is A Binding Contract by eldee and hermette's The Sex Shop Around the Corner and In the Dust and the Shadows by lolafeist. And that, sadly (fantastically), is just this window. 223k words. Thank god I read fast.

It seems that I have lost my mind long enough to sign up for reel_merlin again. Atonement, obviously. I am sure I will have it finished on time this round. In fact I'm confident that once I finish up my Big Bang, it won't take me long at all to finish and polish it. :D

See my icon? That is me today. I have nothing today and it is absolutely pissing rain. &hearts I love rainy days. They make me all kinds of ridiculously happy! I don't even care that I am cold because I thought wearing a short skirt today would be a fab idea, it looks so beautiful outside and this week is almost over!

This post has pretty much no point except to say yes, I am actually alive and (sort of, not really) around and once Friday is over I will be catching up on all the things. I have finally stopped tweaking my summary for paperlegends and even though I am about this close to killing everyone in the registrar's office because they keep giving me all these bogus hoops to jump through and fines to pay (without even telling me what they are for, wtf) today is actually really lovely. I just love curling up and listening to the rain while I read/study/write.

&hearts I kind of hate those moments when I realise my stupidity precedes me. Example being someone I have never met before knowing about that time I broke my (stupid skinny weak) ankle when I was 11. Jumping over a puddle. Or that I would run around as a kid with a ribbon (it was supposed to be a tail) hanging out of the back of my pants. And would do really strange things like introduce my family to our waitress at a restaurant as "the squirrel family" or whatever animal of the day I was pretending I was (I was five). Or even that last week instead of ordering a Dr. Pepper with light ice, I ordered BBQ sauce with light ice. My friends are lovely people.

&hearts lil_lollypop36 is going to kill me with cute and I don't even care. Her chibi series is so wonderfully adorable and can always make me smile even if I am having a truly shitty day. The latest is We Call It Bella Notte which is really really lovely! The chibis eating spaghetti (that is charmingly larger than they are) a la Lady and the Tramp. I love their little faces and the stars look so pretty behind them! I cannot love this enough (which is probably why a huge chunk of my icon space is now dedicated to her chibis) &hearts &hearts

&hearts Who else is following Perfect on the kink meme? I don't know what it is about gallery owner Morgana and artist Merlin that does it for me, but oh god it does. So it turns out that I am allergic to my sister's adorable new pug puppy (she apparently decided at the last minute to get a pug instead of a dachshund). Growing up, we always had miniature schnauzers. My cousins even have miniature schnauzers. Schnauzers don't shed, so I haven't had an issue before and I completely forgot that in addition to cats (which we have also had for many years, but I was on a lot of medication to keep me from being miserable the entire time we owned them) I am allergic to dogs. I am so sadface right now, you just don't even know. He has the cutest little wrinkly face of love and all I want to do is snuggle with him. Which is why I am miserable right now. D:

The first time Gaius meets Uther Pendragon, Uther is a petty lord with a small estate who wants to ensnare Gaius in his webs of intrigue.

I am aware that my f-list is mainly Arthur/Merlin, and that most of you are probably not here for the pre-series gen, but I really hope you take a moment to read this anyway. It is really something fantastic.

Gaius, for one, is wonderful to read. I love this beginning, with a childhood memory. I love seeing them before we know them, as they are coming into themselves. This shows their first meeting and how things were before the Purge and is just a really lovely look into how Gaius works. And how Uther won his loyalty.

Uther gave me chills as a young and ruthlessly ambitious petty noble, because it perfectly showed how he got to the tyrant we know. Epic feeling throughout, a bit dark and really wonderful. Very worth reading!

So hs_merlin starts posting today. I cannot even tell you how excited this makes me. School stories are like my catnip.

The first thing posted was Summertime, Starry Sky by anon, and it is glorious. I have such a thing for tattoos and especially Merlin with tattoos, and this had 18 year old Merlin getting a dragon tattoo on his ribs. Bonus BAMF Merlin and Magic au with younger Arthur. If you haven't read this yet, you really should because it is gorgeous and fun and holy shit the rimming! I want to live in this fic.

Also really enjoyed Breathless by tracy7307. Beautiful h/c with Arthur taking care of Merlin. Bonus Arthur calling Merlin "darling" which I have such a thing for. Very lovely and definitely something you should read.

This is a crossover with Merlin and The Sandman by Neil Gaiman. Beautiful and subtle with the two universes woven together seamlessly. Don't let the warning scare you off! This is wonderfully handled and the "temporary" is there for a reason!

I will admit that I can often be a bit wary of crossovers (as opposed to fusions which I love deeply), but this was truly well done and definitely (more than) worth a read!

THE HAT! I am completely in love with the hat! This is so perfectly precious and well done! I can be a bit leery of manips (particularly NSFW ones) for no real/good reason. But this was lovely!

Speaking of well done manips that I am in love with (though this IS NSFW): Exquisite Pain by Tashastrawberry. When I first saw this I seriously thought this was real. And my brain short-circuited. So brilliant.

These are all just stunning and the color used is fabulous and sets the respective moods so beautifully. Just wonderful, all of them.

The last two recs are from kinkme_merlin. The first is new and by randomslasher: cuddling boys. This is just so sweet and really lovely. For this prompt: Shirtless boys cuddling. Merlin's chest is Arthur's favourite pillow. I love their hands in this. The scene is so tender and gentle and I love Merlin's head resting against Arthur's. So beautiful.
The last is not new but I just realised I had not actually recced it yet (except to riventhorn I believe). Merlin with ear gauges (+ Arthur) by anon. Never would've thought the idea of Merlin with ear gauges would be so damn attractive. But it is. And I am in love with his hair. The red streak is a very nice touch. Such a lovely work. I stare at this frequently. It just makes me so ridiculously happy!

Because I am going a little crazy from being snowed in and only just realising that the stupid Super Bowl is Sunday which I was hoping thinking wasn't due for another few weeks (and is unfortunately invading Arlington (or Dallas if you live anywhere outside of Dallas/Fort Worth.
