Mahama
Refugee Camp
THF program in the refugee camp of Mahama, operated by the Rwanda Taekwondo Federation, has been initiated in 2018 by Parfait Hakizimana, a Paralympian Taekwondo athlete living in the camp. The aim is to provide physical and mental health, promoting inclusion and equality through Taekwondo.
A program catered for para-practitioners
Camp
Since 2015, more than 280,000 Burundians had been forced to flee and to seek refuge in neighboring countries such as Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Among them, were more than 47,000 who went to Rwanda. Today, Mahama population reached over 45’000 refugees.
Promoting well-being, social inclusion and peace
Program
The program run by the Rwanda Taekwondo Federation is addressing weekly 122 participants, mostly boys (85), various colored belts and ginners, but also actitioners with a isability. Participants are training Kyorugi technics in different groups (evening sessions of 45 min) 4 days a week, and a combined session of 2-3 hours on Sunday. Under the impetus of Parfait Hakizimana, Taekwondo became an extremely popular sport in the camp, through an inclusive approach mixing able-bodied and disabled practitioners, with the aim to fight inequalities and promote acceptance and equal opportunities for all refugee communities.
