What we do?

The Wheelchair Football Association (WFA) is the national governing body for Powerchair Football in England. Established in 2005, we are responsible for overseeing all aspects of the sport’s delivery, development, and governance – from grassroots to elite level. We work to ensure Powerchair Football is accessible, inclusive, and sustainable, offering meaningful opportunities for people with physical impairments to engage in the game.

Our role covers club development, competition delivery, player pathways, workforce training, and wider community engagement. We run the National League, the WFA Cup and Vase, and manage the England national teams in partnership with The FA. We also support the launch of new clubs, provide coach education, and connect with County FA’s and local organisations to expand participation across the country. At every level, our goal is to empower players, raise the profile of the sport, and build a strong and inclusive Powerchair Football community.

About Us

The Wheelchair Football Association (The WFA) is at the heart of Powerchair Football in England. As the official governing body, we are committed to providing pathways for players of all ages, disabilities, and backgrounds to engage with the sport. Since our formation in 2005, we have led the growth of Powerchair Football across the country, helping establish it as one of the most inclusive and competitive disability sports in the UK.

Our work spans grassroots development, regional outreach, and national-level competition. We support affiliated clubs, deliver major domestic tournaments, and work closely with The FA on talent pathways and national team selection. Beyond the pitch, we focus on raising awareness, securing partnerships, and ensuring the sport is recognised and resourced. Whether it’s launching a new club, supporting a volunteer, or delivering a national event, everything we do is rooted in the belief that Powerchair Football changes lives – and that everyone should have the chance to be part of it.

What is Powerchair Football?

Powerchair Football is a fast-paced, tactical team sport designed specifically for those with a physical impairment. Played indoors on a standard basketball court, the game features two teams of four players – including a goalkeeper – who use specially adapted powerchairs fitted with metal foot guards to control, pass, and strike an oversized football. Players use spin-kicks and tight movement to outmanoeuvre their opponents, requiring a combination of skill, positioning, and teamwork to succeed.

The sport is open to individuals with a wide range of physical impairments, and is one of the very few competitive team sports available to powerchair users. It allows players to take part in structured training and match play, represent clubs in league and cup competitions, and even aspire to play internationally. The rules are adapted to ensure fairness, safety, and accessibility, while maintaining the core excitement and competitiveness of football. Powerchair Football is not just a sport – it’s a community that offers social connection, physical activity, and a platform for achievement at every level.
