Everyone's talking about lymphatic drainage
The complete drainage system your hormones ride on, and how to support it in the right order
I’ve been seeing these Chinese drainage movements everywhere lately.
You know the ones: the hops, the arm swings, the trunk twists. Scroll Instagram for 30 seconds and bam, there it is.
And honestly? I love it.
I love that we’re finally having conversations about supporting the drainage system. Because this has been one of the missing elements in how we approach hormone health.
Here’s what usually happens:
You’re dealing with heavy periods, PMS that knocks you out, endometriosis, PCOS, hormonal acne, whatever the imbalance is, and the first question everyone asks (including you) is:
“What should I eat? What supplements should I take? What can I ADD to fix this?”
We obsess over what we’re putting IN our bodies.
But we rarely think about what the body is eliminating.
And here’s the truth: You are what you eat, but you’re also what you don’t eliminate.
If your body can’t properly clear out excess estrogen, metabolic waste, toxins, and inflammation, it doesn’t matter how clean your diet is or how many supplements you’re taking.
You’re just adding more to a system that’s already backed up.
My Body Was Screaming But Nobody Was Listening
About 10 years ago, I was you.
Irregular cycles, diagnosed with PCOS. Put on the pill, then off the pill, symptoms all over the place.
Every single period, I was in excruciating pain. I’d finish an entire blister pack of ibuprofen every cycle. I always carried at least 2 packs in my bag… just in case.
I was scared of getting my period. Not annoyed, but scared.
I went from doctor to doctor. And every single time, the solution was the same: “Go back on the pill.”
I wasn’t against the pill on principle. I just knew it wasn’t solving anything. It was masking symptoms. And the moment I went off it the first time, everything came back worse.
This is one of the reasons I do the work I do.
Because during this long, frustrating, expensive, trial-and-error process, I learned something crucial:
The female body doesn’t work in isolation.
When you’re trying to heal your period, you can’t just look at your ovaries or your hormones.
You have to look at the entire ecosystem: your gut health, liver function, lymphatic system, nervous system, blood sugar, stress levels, sleep, movement.
All of it is connected.
And when one system backs up, it affects everything else.
The Sign Everyone Missed
In my case, my body was signaling exactly where the problem was.
But nobody connected the dots.
I started going to the sauna and I loved the warmth, the relaxation.
But I noticed something very strange.
I was not sweating.
I would get very red, puffy, overheated… but no sweat would come out.
I’d sit next to a friend who was soaking wet after 5 minutes. Meanwhile, I’d be in there for 20 minutes with literally no drop of sweat.
What the hell was happening?
I even pointed it out to one of the doctors I visited.
But unfortunately they didn’t make the connection.
A few years later, I learned that was a massive indicator that my elimination pathways were blocked.
Looking back now, there were SO MANY SIGNS:
I wouldn’t have bowel movements every day, I’d easily skip a day or two
My legs would swell after sitting for a few hours at dinner
Puffy face in the mornings
Vey bad brain fog
Constant low-grade sinus congestion
I still get swelling reactions sometimes, especially if I drink wine. That’s one reason I avoid red wine now, my body just can’t handle it.
But the sweat thing? That was the big indicator. And it was missed for years.
This is why I keep saying: your body is sending you signals.
You just need someone to help you translate them.
The signs are everywhere, but you need to know what to look for.
Because once you see them, you can’t unsee them.
So let’s talk about what’s actually happening in your body and why drainage matters more than you think.
You Are What You Eat And What You Don’t Eliminate
Here’s the thing nobody tells you:
Waste that sits too long in your body doesn’t just disappear.
It gets reabsorbed into your bloodstream and recirculated back into your system.
So nutrition and drainage are equally important.
You can eat the cleanest diet in the world, take all the right supplements, follow every protocol perfectly but if your body can’t eliminate waste efficiently, you’re just adding more to a backed-up system.
Think of it this way: if your garbage truck stopped coming for weeks, would you keep adding more trash to the bins? Of course not. But that’s exactly what we do with our bodies.
Drainage vs. Detox: What’s the Difference?
People use these words interchangeably, but they’re not the same thing.
Drainage = the pathways your body uses to move waste out (colon, liver, bile, kidneys, lymph, sweat, breath)
Detox = transforming and releasing toxins from cells and tissues
Here’s the key: You need drainage BEFORE detox.
If drainage is blocked, toxins that get mobilized have nowhere to go.
They recirculate and they make you feel worse.
This is why people feel terrible on cleanses. Headaches, skin flares., gut pain, histamine reactions, weight gain…
These aren’t signs of “healing” or “toxins leaving.”
They’re signs that toxins are being moved without a clear exit.
When you support drainage first, detox becomes safer and more effective.
Why This Matters for Your Hormones
Healthy drainage is non-negotiable for hormone balance.
Your hormones ride on your detox and elimination systems.
Estrogen, cortisol, thyroid hormones, progesterone, all of them are used, broken down, and then cleared through your liver, bile, stool, urine, and sweat.
If these exits slow down, hormone byproducts linger and recirculate.
That’s when you see:
Heavier PMS
Mood swings
Breast tenderness
Acne
Bloating
Cycle changes
When drainage works, your body can both use hormones and let them go.
You get cleaner signals, steadier moods, more predictable cycles, less reactivity.
But when it doesn’t work? Your body is drowning in hormones it can’t clear.
And no amount of seed cycling or supplements will fix that.
The Drainage Sequence Your Body Actually Follows
Your body has a specific order for moving waste:
Cells release byproducts into tissues
Tissues send them to the lymph
Lymph and blood bring them to the liver
Liver packages them into bile
Bile and gut move them to stool
Urine and sweat support this process
When you respect that order and support drainage first, detox becomes safe and effective.
But here’s what most people don’t know:
If the organs in this chain carry the weight of suppressed emotions, they stiffen and slow down.
The Emotional Layer Nobody Talks About
Emotions shape how well your body drains.
When detox efforts stall, many practitioners look at emotional load first not more supplements.
Stuck emotions act like another layer of stress. They tighten tissues, slow movement, and make it harder for organs to do their job.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, each emotion links to specific organs:
Anger → Liver
Fear → Kidneys
Grief → Lungs
When you mobilize physical toxins, emotional material often surfaces too.
Your body doesn’t separate them as neatly as we think.
When organs carry suppressed emotions, they stiffen. Drainage pathways back up. Your cells, tissues, and organs carry more pressure than they should.
Supporting emotional release isn’t a bonus but part of supporting drainage.
How Your Drainage System Actually Works
Think of it like a city’s waste management system:
Homes create waste → neighborhood pipes collect it → processing plants filter it → garbage trucks take it away.
When one part backs up, the whole thing stops working.
Here’s how it works in your body:
Level 1: Cells (The Homes)
Your cells create waste that needs to be eliminated.
Common sources: air pollution, heavy metals, mold, pesticides.
These cause mitochondrial dysfunction which leads to fatigue and reduced ability to detox.
Quick support:
Morning sunlight (5-10 min)
Quality sleep in dark, cool room
Reduce EMF at night
Eat antioxidant-rich foods
Stay hydrated
Level 2: Brain (The Collection System)
Your brain has a glymphatic system that clears waste mostly during sleep.
Signs it’s not working: Brain fog, headaches, memory issues
Quick support:
Sleep on your right side
Get 7-9 hours consistently
Avoid alcohol before bed
Stay hydrated
Level 3: Lymph (The Neighborhood Pipes)
Your lymphatic system cleanses your body of toxins and cellular waste.
When it’s sluggish: Swelling, fluid retention, cellulite, lowered immunity, sinus infections, frequent colds
Sound familiar?
For me: swollen legs after sitting, no sweating in sauna, puffy face, sinus congestion.
Quick support:
Move daily (lymph moves through muscle contraction)
Dry brushing
Rebound for 5 minutes
Deep breathing
Contrast showers
Level 4: Liver (The Processing Plant)
Your liver filters toxins and deposits them into bile for elimination.
Stagnant bile = chronic illness.
Caused by: bacteria, viruses, medications, excess estrogen, parasites, toxins
If bile doesn’t flow, toxic acids leak into kidneys, lungs, skin often the root of MCAS and histamine intolerance.
Quick support:
Bitter foods before meals
Healthy fats with meals
Lemon water in morning
Sulfur-rich foods (broccoli, garlic, onions)
Castor oil packs over liver
Level 5: Colon (The Garbage Truck)
Your colon sits at the bottom of the drainage funnel.
If you’re not pooping 1-2 times daily, everything upstream backs up.
A backed-up colon = excess estrogen gets reabsorbed instead of eliminated.
Quick support:
Drink 8-10 glasses water daily
Eat fiber-rich foods
Magnesium before bed
Walk after meals
Squat position (use Squatty Potty)
Don’t ignore the urge
It’s Time to Flip the Script
For years, we’ve been told the answer to hormone issues is in what we eat: more greens, more supplements, more superfoods, more protocols. And yes, nutrition matters but you can eat perfectly and still feel terrible if your body can’t eliminate waste. Think about it. You wouldn’t keep filling your house with new furniture while the garbage piled up in every room, would you? Yet that’s exactly what we do with our bodies. We add more and more, another supplement, another superfood, another “hormone-balancing” protocol while our elimination pathways are completely backed up.
Your body is super smart… it knows how to balance hormones, clear inflammation, regulate your cycle. But it can’t do any of that if the exits are blocked. Supporting drainage isn’t just another thing to add to your wellness routine… it’s the foundation that makes everything else actually work. When your drainage pathways are open, suddenly all those healthy foods you’re eating can do their job. Your supplements actually get absorbed. Your body can finally let go of the excess estrogen causing your heavy periods and PMS. This is the shift that changes everything. And once you experience it, you’ll wonder why nobody talked about this sooner.

Are cyclical migraines also related to lymphatic drainage?
