What We Do

We specialize in the projects that matter most, the ones that change how you feel the moment you walk through the door. Each project is fully designed before a single wall is touched, so what you see during the design phase is what you get.

A Few of Our Favorite Stories

Every project starts with a conversation and ends with a home that feels completely and unmistakably yours. Here's a look at some of the spaces we've had the privilege to bring to life across the Portland area.

Why Families Across
Portland Choose THE Remodel Group

We know you've heard it before — "we're different." So instead of telling you, we'll show you exactly how. Here are three things our clients tell us matter most.

01

You'll Know the Price Before We Ever Break Ground

Nobody should have to wonder what their project is going to cost. That’s why we build a fixed-price contract into every project — a real number, not an estimate that grows. Our two-phase design process is so thorough that by the time we break ground, there’s almost nothing left to the imagination. We have virtually zero change orders. That’s not luck, that’s the process.

02

One Project Director Throughout Your Entire Project

From your very first phone call to the day we hand back your keys, you’ll have a dedicated Project Director by your side. Not a salesperson who disappears. Not a new face every few weeks. The same trusted person who knows your project inside and out, answers your questions quickly, and keeps you in the loop with daily updates and photos through your private client portal.

03

Your Vision, Brought to Life Before Construction Begins

Before a single wall comes down, you’ll see exactly what your finished space will look like. Our in-house designer creates detailed renderings, mood boards, plans, and material selections so there are no surprises. You’ll move forward confidently, not just hopeful.

Questions We Hear All the Time

How much does a remodel cost?

Every home is different, so every project is priced uniquely to your scope, materials, and vision. Our projects typically range from $100,000 to $500,000+. What we can promise is this: by the time you sign a build contract, you’ll have a fixed price you can count on — not a rough guess that changes after construction starts.

Timelines vary by project size and complexity. A primary suite remodel might take 8–12 weeks in construction, while a whole-home remodel could run 4–6 months or more. What sets us apart is that we don’t start construction until all your materials are on-site, which means we can build on a real schedule, not a wishful one.

In many cases, our clients stay in their homes during the remodel. We take home protection seriously, from zip walls and floor coverings to daily cleanup, so disruption is minimized as much as possible. We’ll talk through what’s realistic for your specific project in our very first conversation.

We have an in-house designer on our team, which is genuinely rare in this industry. That means design and construction are fully coordinated from day one. You won’t be managing two separate teams or wondering if the drawings match what the builder will actually build. Everything stays under one roof.

That’s completely okay — and honestly, it is exactly why we do what we do. We have helped hundreds of homeowners plan and design their dream space.

Our process is built to help you get there. We’ll walk through your home with you, listen to how you live, and help you figure out what’s possible. We’re here to ask the right questions, not just hand you a catalog.

We’re excited to speak with you. To connect, please fill out our contact form so we can learn more about your vision and get you on the calendar for a call.

During our discovery call, we’ll spend a few minutes getting to know your project and making sure we’re a good fit for each other. If we are, we’ll schedule a time to come see your space in person. If we’re not the right match, we’ll tell you honestly and point you toward someone who is.

What Our Clients Are Saying

We're proud of the spaces we build, but hearing how those spaces have changed our clients' lives is what means the most to us.

A Process Built Around You

We've spent nearly 20 years refining how a remodel should work. The result is a clear, six-step process that protects your investment, eliminates surprises, and keeps you confident from the first conversation to the final walkthrough.

Discovery Call
A quick conversation to make sure we're the right fit for each other.

We start with a short phone call to learn about your vision, timeline, and investment expectations. There’s no pressure and no obligation. If we’re a great fit, we’ll schedule a time to come see your space. If we’re not, we’ll tell you honestly and point you in the right direction. Either way, you’ll leave the call with more clarity than you started with.

We visit your home to understand how you live, what’s not working, and what your dream looks like. We encourage all decision-makers to be present so everyone is on the same page from the start. While detailed measurements come later at the Meet & Measure, we do perform a LiDAR scan during this visit so our early feasibility and investment range discussion is grounded in real data — giving you a realistic sense of what’s possible before you commit to design.

We present a detailed Project Development Agreement that outlines exactly what your project involves, how we work, and what to expect along the way, along with a preliminary cost range and scope options designed to address your budget and priorities. A design retainer kicks things off to begin the design phase — and it’s fully credited back to your construction contract when you decide to move forward. This is where the partnership officially begins.

Our in-house designer creates conceptual drawings, renderings, and mood boards so you can see your possibilities before any decisions are locked in. We’d rather you fall in love with a direction than guess at it. This phase is all about making sure we fully understand your vision and give you the chance to refine it before we go deeper.

We take your chosen direction and finish it completely — refined renderings, full material selections, detailed specifications, and trade walkthroughs with every subcontractor. By the end of this phase, you’ll have a fixed-price contract you can count on. No guessing, no vague estimates. Just a real number for a fully designed project.

Once the contract is signed, we apply for permits, schedule our team, and order materials. We don’t break ground until everything is ready to go — which means your project runs on a real schedule. Your dedicated Project Director is with you every step of the way, keeping you informed with daily updates and photos through your private client portal. When we hand back your keys, the only thing left to do is enjoy it.

We Built This Company to Do Things Right

THE Remodel Group (TRG) was founded in Portland in 2007 with a clear mission: to bring excellence to every part of remodeling, not just the finished space, but the entire experience of getting there. Owner Steve Klingerman spent decades learning what makes a remodel truly great, and built a team and a process designed to give clients a genuinely positive journey from first conversation to final walkthrough.

Today, we’re a close-knit team who care deeply about the homes we work in and the families who live in them. We take on fewer projects by design, so every client gets the attention, craftsmanship, and communication they deserve. And we show up every day with the same intention we started with: to make your remodel a great experience, and to leave your home more beautiful, more functional, and unmistakably you.

Your Home Should Be Your Favorite Place

You've been dreaming about it long enough. Let's make it happen.
