HOKAY, so Senka here is the goddess of darkness, both literal and metaphorical. On the one hand, this means she can sense if you have affiliations with darkness or use darkness-based abilities. On the other hand, she gets to see all of a person's "darkness" manifested on their person, distorting their appearance in a manner that represents their personal problems. Appearance features can be pretty much anything, canonically she's seen things like spectres following people, horrifically deformed and warped moving bodies, paper-like skin and other similar features on people. That said, the features are more likely than not aren't actually physically there; she only sees them in a meta sort of way. If you're familiar with Persona 4, she basically sees people as Shadows.

I'm leaving it up to the muns to decide on what she'll be seeing specifically but the general rule of the thumb is that the more deep-seated, serious, debilitating etc. their issues/insecurities/problems are, the more prominent they will appear to her. This is especially true if they do not acknowledge or attempt to hide or deny them. It's entirely possible for a person appear completely different to her through this. Go wild guys. Conversely, their appearance can also change over time if they confront/reconcile/come to terms with their issues, and they begin to look more "normal", revealing more of their true appearance to her. Also, it's possible for someone to be close to their true appearance to her if they don't really have any outstanding issues to begin with, or have already dealt with them.

Senka herself won't know everything, particularly the nitty-gritty details, without the benefit of context, but she's been doing this long enough that she generally can figure out what the issues are. That said, she respects privacy and will only bring them up to them personally in private if she decides to meddle, and I will always ask before before she tries!

If you are a special case and happen to qualify as pure light, it will cancel out her Shadow-vision like in canon with her counterpart. Gods and other related beings are exempted as well.

And now a handy form!

Is your character affiliated with darkness or have darkness related abilities?
Is your character exempted from Shadow-vision? If yes, none of the below apply.
What will Senka see your character as?
Is there anything she could find out that you'd rather she not bring up at all?

Finding that this new world was a little too quiet, it made humans to populate it, then proceeded to sit back and watch. Because belief works in strange ways here, the gods that the humans worshipped eventually came into existence. Bluntly put, they were the world's maintenance crew – they kept things running the way they should, as long as people continued to believe in them. Which is a good thing when people seem to have this thing for endangering the world or some other Very Important Thing, mostly by accident (not that the gods were any better, either).

Of course, when you hang around humanity long enough it starts rubbing off on you, and the gods ended up being ridiculously human over time. And despite ultimately having a common purpose, they didn't always get along, much like a loosely related dysfunctional extended family. Except sometimes, things happened and they died.

Senka herself in the ninth incarnation of the darkness deity, a high number compared to the others who only have two or three at most. Having come into existence when her predecessor died a painful, tragic death (in a long line of painful tragic deaths), few of the other gods had very high expectations of her and her counterpart Caerwyn. They even took bets on when they'd kill each other or something, because it wasn't as if the previous eight times proved them wrong.

Young as they were then, both Senka and Caerwyn weren't stupid, and figured if the buck had to stop here if they wanted to survive for any considerable length of time. The problem was while they didn't hate each other, they were far from liking each other as well. So they decided it would be better if they stayed separate and away from each other, in what they believed would prevent it from boiling over into anything potentially murderous.

All was well at first, and Senka was pretty confident she could survive without having to need Caerwyn to tag along! And then she met humans for the first time and got acquainted with the ability that had driven one of her predecessors insane. When she looked at people, she saw not only them but their anger, hatred, fear, insecurity; every negative feeling and every bit of themselves they kept hidden from the world and possibly themselves. Without Caerwyn's "light" to cancel this out, that was literally all she saw of mankind.

Needless to say, as a young godling she didn't cope with this well, and almost instantly became disgusted at humanity. She was too proud to admit she had problems with this however, thinking that it would have been cowardly and weak of her to go back on the earlier agreement. For a time, it only caused her to incite those negative feelings further in whoever was unfortunate enough to catch her attention that day, with...equally unfortunate results. Out of spite, and because it seemed like the logical thing to do.

Then it kind of backfired when one poor girl she had tried to drive to suicide instead turned around, got help and got better. Senka was confused at first because THIS WAS NOT AS PLANNED, but after a while, she felt pretty good about it. Since it was one way of putting her power to good use, Senka adopted a more benevolent (though not exactly nice) policy towards mortals -- might as well try to get these dumbasses into being better people. Which is what she's been doing for the past few centuries, at this point.

✧ TIMELINE: End of history section
✧ PERSONALITY: Senka is...kind of what you'd expect from a goddess of darkness, at least in the sense that she's pretty damn broody. Deadpan and often sarcastic, she usually doesn't have much nice things to say about anything, and she tends to be rather dry in conversation. Don't like what you're hearing? Eh, your problem. As you'd expect, she isn't often genuinely happy; sardonic and/or unpleasant expressions of happiness are far more common from her.

As a being who presides over both literal and metaphorical darkness, and therefore is all too aware of the incredibly nasty, albeit often hidden bits of humanity, Senka is incredibly cynical. She sees everyone and their mother's issues presented before her, and even if she can't figure out all the nitty-gritty without the benefit of context, she doesn't need to be a genius to know what they are. She would sooner expect an asshole than someone genuinely nice. Even then, there's always another side to the latter -- unpleasant and generally tucked away, maybe even from themselves. But that's people for you.

Despite this however, Senka is paradoxically a bit of an idealist too. Sure she assumes the worst of you nearly all the time, but experience has taught her that people have a way of surprising her, and sometimes there really is a light at the end of tunnel, metaphorically speaking. She believes in things like the human capacity for self-growth and such, and for someone who sees nearly everyone's ugly side she's also rather reluctant to believe there isn't something worthwhile to them, as people. Frankly, she's sometimes a little annoyed and frustrated at her duty as a god to be humanity's collective darkness (in a manner of speaking), but someone has to do it.

Senka has something of a hero complex, or as much of one as a god can get while still being...godlike. She is sick and tired of common stereotypes of darkness and shadows as being bad or evil, and feels the urge to prove it wrong. She wouldn't admit it even if she was held at gunpoint, but the assumption, while understandable, hurts. For this reason she's considered one of the more meddlesome gods in her world. Senka doesn't get herself involved in the "big things" that involve masses of people, but she has no problems mucking about in the lives of individuals and nudging (or shoving) them to overcome their issues. She'll bitch about humanity any day, but when it comes down to it more than anything else she wants to see others become better people and therefore prove her right.

That said, Senka knows people but isn't exactly all that good at relationships in general. She is far more likely to try to act as a confidant than a friend, per say. She might get close to people, if only because it's kind of hard for her to avoid that, but she usually doesn't let people get close to her in the same way -- there aren't many she'd consider an equal and therefore okay to let in like that. Basically, good at general casual friendships and being everyone's secretkeeper not unlike a bartender, not so good at deeper stuff.

All in all, Senka is just a god with a duty who is telling herself very hard that it's worth it, even if sometimes she isn't sure whether it really is. She isn't nice, maybe not all that good either, but she tries to be nurturing (although she is of the school that sometimes, you have to be an asshole to be kind). If nothing else, she's sincere. For a given value of sincerity, anyway.

✧ ABILITIES/POWERS: First off, Senka is immortal. Se has an indefinite lifespan, so long people continue to believe in him, and she ages extremely slowly. She cannot die of hunger, thirst, or poison, though they still cause her pain and suffering if she doesn’t do something about them. She is still killable, and whatever can kill an average human is capable of killing her, barring any exceptions that are mentioned here.

Senka has control over darkness; more specifically shadows. She can manipulate shadows into three-dimensional, semi-solid shapes, though how much she can do is also limited by the size of the shadow. Generally, small shadows mean small shapes, big shadows give her more room to create larger shapes. Senka can also travel through shadows, sinking in and emerging out of another shadow, provided it's large enough for her to actually enter and exit from. Of course, she can't use this power to leave the city, but she can cover large distances with this. Understandably, she is at her most powerful at night, and her weakest at midday.

She has automatic immunity to darkness-based attacks, as well as night-vision. In contrast, she is damaged more by light-based attacks, though in her universe light and dark attacks cancel each other out. Her blood turns into sticky black gunk upon contact with the air. Apart from all these, Senka has the ability to see a person's "darkness", which is a broad definition for their issues and insecurities (especially if they try to hide/deny them). As in, she literally sees them represented upon the person. There will be more info on this in a permissions posts, but generally the more deep-seated, debilitating, serious etc. their issue is, the more prominently featured it will be to Senka.

On another note, she can detect people who have affiliations with darkness, since it's her domain, and a general god-sense where she can detect if someone is non-human, though she won't necessarily be able to tell exactly what they are

✧ TIME OF ARRIVAL: Night

✧ MASK DESIGN: Butterfly masks ftw
✧ PLACE OF SOLACE: A small, homely looking cottage, if a bit eerie-feeling to most. A small area surrounding the cottage will be in a state of perma-night barring game events, and the TENEKA rule still applies there -- no voices.

SAMPLES

✧ FIRST PERSON: At trialbydreams
✧ THIRD PERSON: Senka was not by any means normal, and she was used to abnormal things, but she had to admit that a city of dreams was kind of a surreal idea. Not that she liked the idea either -- dreams were all ultimately in your head, after all (she was disregarding anything Miela would say about this for purposes of making her point right this moment). Being stuck in your own head can't mean anything good, in this case.

She did appreciate that it was nighttime when she showed up, though. Even if it wasn't the city's intention, it was a nice welcome for her. The night was comfortable, and even in a strange land it was always familiar, so long it was dark and there were the stars and the moon. The lack of voice thing was new, but she could deal. Silence of the night and all. Of course, the first thing she had to do was explore the city on foot to familiarize herself with the layout, but the shadows everywhere were inviting. They were familiar. She figured they always would be, because it's not as if you could really change what a shadow was, different worlds or not.

She looked around to make sure there was no one around to watch, and then stepped into the shadow of a building. Into. Her feet sunk in slowly at first, testing the metaphorical waters. There was that feeling of simultaneous weightlessness and not, and it seemed that the dark space was the same as the one back home. Once she felt comfortable enough, she sunk all the way in, disappearing into the darkness.

It was much more fun navigating through the dark space. These streets were not her streets, but in the dark space they always were, so to speak.

✧ ORIGINAL CHARACTER QUESTION: Grouch about being stuck in a city of dreams, in part because it sounds a little too good to be true for her. But she has all the time in the world, so Senka won't be actively seeking a way out and take it easy. There's also plenty of people here to keep herself preoccupied with. She won't align herself with the royalty but she would see no reason to not be civil to them either, though she'll also try to keep herself out of meddling in any business involving them since they would probably count as a Big Thing.

Affable, polite and generally pleasant-seeming. Which he is, mind you! He is forced to view people in the best possible light, which creates massive dissonance when he knows they aren't actually very good people but still has to believe they can be. A bit of a Stepford and troll, he would like to remind people the Nice Is Not Good. His job is to help reinforce a person's strengths, so that they may fulfil their potential. He can create visual illusions and spam lasers, as well as compel people to speak the truth.

Yes, he is a trap. All the better to confuse you.

PB: Hijiri Byakuren [Touhou Project]

→ link • link • link • credit

Lacking the inherent flashiness of most of the other gods, he deicded to compensate by being over-the-top. Loud hammy Blood Knight who grew to like humanity too much, basically. He still likes fighting and while he's not exactly interested in killing he doesn't care for it either, but he's also pretty disillusioned with his job. He's a god who started to think that maybe being a normal person, for a given value of "normal", wasn't a bad thing, which is rather like a death sentence to them. In some ways, despite being crazy, he's closer to earth than the rest of the deities because he pretty much spent 99% of his time with humans.

He decided rather than let metaphysics kill him due to the lack of belief in him as a god, he blew himself up with the help of his best friend, the fire god. He has an insane pain tolerance and is pretty much fueled by pulling off crazy stunts, on the principle that once you reach past a certain point of crazy, you can get away with anything because people would be too flabbergasted to stop you.

PB: Prussia (Axis Powers Hetalia)

→ link • link • link • credit
