Here’s the checklist I follow.\n\n### Artifact metadata\n- Degree n\n- Coefficient ordering (asc or desc)\n- Numeric type expectations (float64, decimal, int)\n- Valid input domain (xmin, xmax)\n- Any normalization parameters (offset/scale)\n- Units for x and y\n\n### Runtime guardrails\n- Validate coefficient count matches n + 1.\n- Validate coefficients are finite (no NaN/inf).\n- Clamp or reject out-of-range inputs (explicit policy).\n- Expose a safe eval(x) that everyone uses.\n\n### Observability\n- Log or meter “out-of-domain evaluations.”\n- Track NaNs, infinities, and unusually large magnitudes.\n- If this is a calibration curve, track drift over time (input distribution changes are a quiet killer).\n\n### Human-proofing\n- Name coefficients explicitly in config (a0, a1, …) or store an order field so humans can’t guess wrong.\n- Include 3–5 “known points” with expected outputs and validate them on load.\n\nThat last one is my favorite: it turns a polynomial from “mysterious constants” into a tested contract.\n\n## When Not to Use a Polynomial\nPolynomials are powerful, but they’re not the answer to every curve-shaped problem. I skip them when:\n- The function has discontinuities or sharp corners (polynomials will ring/overshoot unless you go piecewise).\n- Extrapolation is unavoidable and dangerous (polynomials can blow up fast outside domain).\n- The data is better modeled by something else (exponentials, logarithms, rational functions, or even lookup tables).\n\nA lookup table with linear interpolation is sometimes the most honest solution: predictable, stable, and easy to clamp. The “best” model is the one that fails in a controlled way.\n\n## Closing: Treat the Formula Like an API\nThe polynomial formula is simple enough to memorize, which is exactly why it’s so easy to underestimate. In production, that formula is an API:\n- Coefficients have an order.\n- Degree has a definition.\n- The domain matters.\n- Evaluation strategy matters.\n\nOnce you treat those as explicit contracts—backed by canonicalization, Horner evaluation, guardrails, and tests—polynomials stop being fragile math tricks and become reliable building blocks you can safely reuse across systems.
