Instead of computing a + b and then trying to detect damage, you prove that a + b is safe before doing it.
For 32-bit signed integers:

Edge case 1: INT_MIN is special
In two’s complement, the absolute value of INT_MIN cannot be represented as a positive int.

So if your logic uses abs, be careful. A lot of ‘clever’ checks fail here.
Edge case 2: subtraction is not just addition
You can turn subtraction into addition (a - b is a + (-b)), but -b can overflow when b == INT_MIN.

If you do a + b + c, you need to check overflow at each step or use a helper that checks the combined sum safely.
