January to April 2013 - 28 icons

I started off 2013 with an iconmaking slump. I technically made 28 icons, but a lot of them are rejects that no one has ever seen. Still, some of my favorite icons I've ever made were from these few months. I'm really proud of these few, they each have things about them that I like. For instance: the crop of the Chuck icon, the bright white of the Pitch Perfect icon, the colors of the Elementary icon, the contrast/lighting of the Merlin one, plus the solid background; the yellow and composition of the icon from The Hour, and the green and light of the Doctor Who icon.

May 2013 - 31 icons

In May I entered 20inspirations so it's responsible for the fact that I made icons that month. I claimed Amy/Eleven and that round produced some nice things. I continued to work on my coloring. The last icon here, the one with the blue gradient background has grown to become one of my favorites.

June to August 2013 - 92 icons

This period was something else. In a good way! I opened up requests at my icon community, so that's why I made so many icons. I grew the most while filling those requests. In fact, I sort of found a solid iconmaking technique during this period. I'm still trying new things but as far as coloring live action goes, I kind of have an actual method now? I'm really happy with it by the way. When I first started out iconning, I used a lot of textures to color, but here I don't think I used any. I just tried to bring out the natural colors of each image, and added my own colors if needed through Adjustment Layers and such.

September to December 2013 - 25 icons

And here I was pretty much out of iconmaking again. I made a few for userpics on twitter and tumblr, some were cropped from larger graphics of mine, and the anime ones are for an anime icon battle I participated in. Still, I'm pleased with them. Looking back, I've improved so much. Especially when you take my 2012 progression post into account. Some of these haven't even been posted yet.

Final Thoughts: This year had nothing on 2012 when it comes to quantity of icons, but in my honest opinion the quality of my icons and the technique used this year surpass most of what I produced last year. This year feels like it was a love letter to negative space and the color yellow, and Amy Pond and Amy/Eleven. Not bad at all! Next year I hope to produce more anime icons and to get better at that sort of iconmaking. I also want to improve my sharpening, I can't seem to get it just right.

Grand Total : 176 icons made this year!

Oh my God, I just checked my watcher count after months, and I noticed that thelighted has surpassed 100 watchers! Thanks guys, for supporting this hobby of mine. I also want to thank everyone who has nominated or seconded my magicawards nominations. You guys are wonderful!

This little community was made on June 24, 2011, even though my first icon post here wasn't until March 2012. Since then, the icon community hasn't been anything but welcoming and friendly to me! I'm very grateful for the friends and acquaintances I've made here, and your comments and usage of my icons always bring me joy! So if anyone's interested, I'm opening requests!

Leave me caps, or fandoms, or I can just make some interest icons, I do request that if you leave caps, only leave high quality ones. There's no cap on how many requests you can leave, I'll just close the post at some point if I feel like I have a good number of icons to start on.

I don't even have any excuses for the long ass gap between my last icon post and this one so I'll spare you the lies.
Okay, so um I have fifty seven icons for you! Some of them are from December, but most of them are new-ish.

Twenty were made for this round at 20inspirations. My claim was Amy/Eleven (Doctor Who).
I'm really rusty man these icons are inconsistent in quality. But kudos to me for completing the set because I was like "what is even the point anymore?" for a while. Oh GOD but I'm really pleased with them because of the subject material. Anyway here you go.

January 2012 - 32 icons


I forget what drove me to start making icons. Truth is, I came over here from tumblr. I had an LJ but I never used it and when I did it was for reading ONTD, asking questions at TQC, and reading fic. Whatever it was that got me interested, I'm glad I got into iconmaking in 2012.
Wow these are horrific to look at to say the least. I was so heavy-handed on Sharpen isn't it sad? Or in the case of the 3rd and 5th icons, I didn't sharpen enough. #2 and #6 look sunburnt, #5 lacks contrast, #4 looks washed out, #3 is plain/boring, and #1 is creeping me out a bit. I'm thinking that blending Irene into her hand was where it crossed the line between strange and frightening. I didn't even post these icons. Even though I hate these icons, I'm so happy I still have them because now I can see the progress I've made in a year.

February 2012 - 75 icons


I made a lot of Merlin icons this month, can you tell? I would probably still use the second one, it has a grungy thing going on that I think fits the crop and comes off somewhat well. If I still had the psd I would tweak it and see what I could do. I was super into negative space, I think I thought it would be easy. It was easy to do, sure. But it wasn't easy to do well. I didn't know that then though. I remember making 50 icons in one weekend and being really proud about it. ~~Now I can't make 50 icons in a month half of the time.~~ With the coloring of a lot of these I just used the same psd over and over with minor adjustments. Especially for icons like #2, #3, and #4. Still I think these are a step up from January's icons.

March 2012 - 35 icons


WOW this month's theme was colorful gradient maps. I'm not going to lie to you, I want to go back to making more icons like this. Vibrant and monochromatic please. I am still very in love with that fourth icon. I really adore the colors and the crop.
As far as these icons go, I now see that the texture in the first one is really unflattering, and that the second one doesn't have enough contrast. The third one is okay but I'm not crazy about it. The fifth has an unflattering texture as well and the sixth one is too sharp and vibrant, while Amy's face is still ghost white. I wonder how I managed to screw that up. I think that my March icons show me trying new things and techniques, but not quite getting a proper grasp on them.

April 2012 - 58 icons


I played around with light blobs a lot in April. I really don't have much to say about these icons, I don't hate them but I don't care for them. I remember loving the third icon after I made it. Now I sort of want to burn it because why is his face so red and why is his skin so yellow. I'd love to remake it someday because the crop is one of my favorites. The fourth icon is one I'd still use today. I liked that coloring a lot and I used it on a whole ton of icons I made in April. Pity I can't find the psd now, I'd like to see it. The fifth icon was one that I got a lot of praise on (well relatively anyway). It won as my best in the round of inspired20in20 I made it for, and people commented on it the most in my icon post. Getting something off my chest right now: that was one of my least favorite icons in the entire batch and it still is one of my least favorite icons. To each their own though.

May 2012 - 37 icons


I'm just not very impressed with these icons at all. I think they're better as a whole than the icons I made in April but they're all missing something. At the point in time that I posted these they made me really happy. I was finally grasping the hang of light blobs and even getting control of sharpening, at least in my opinion. I also did a lot of merged soft light layers. I'd like to remake all of these icons but especially #1, #5, and #6. I used to have a real lady boner for #6. I must've been blind because while the rainbow effect is pretty, the image quality is sort of bad. I still like #4 a lot, I think the lighting is great and I like the text as well.

June 2012 - 63


Lots and lots and lots and lots of light blobs. Also orange and yellow. I still like all of these icons to be honest. If anything I'd sharpen the third more. #4 is an icon I really like because it's the first and only time I've ever liked my blocking and also the color is gorgeous. I guess if I had to I'd remove some of that yellow from her face because it's slightly irksome. Needs a tad bit more sharpening on her features as well. These all have very lush colors.

July 2012 - 64 icons


July produced 3 of my favorite icons out of what I've made all year. #1, #2, and #4 are actually icons I love. I'm allowed to love my work sometimes ;). When I first set out to icon #1 I was really intimidated. The cap is a frequently used cap in the DW fandom and I had no idea how I would be able to make my icon different from anyone else's, but I really love mine. I came away with it wrapped in my arms and with me babying it like it was the most precious thing in the world. I could stare at that hair porn forever. I love the mutedness of #2 and the way it plays with the shadows surrounding Eleven. #4 is one of my favorites because the close crop is lovely and the bright vibrant colors are striking and almost look good enough to eat. Again I see my style is changing here (but my color palette really isn't) and that I'm playing with light and shadows much more and becoming more comfortable with everything.

August 2012 - 8 icons (OOP)

All I did was marathon Teen Wolf in its entirety and have a huge Photoshop block. No iconmaking progress was made this month in my opinion. These are the only two icons I even posted from August, the rest I would really like to forget.

September 2012 - 14 (not much better)


I was sort of just wandering around and not really making anything good this month. When I get the time I really want to remake #2 because the concept and the crop are burned into my brain I just can't seem to carry out the vision I have and put it onto the canvas.There's a lot of gradient-ness going on here. I started using those more in September and while it really didn't make a difference then, down the line I can see it improving my work for the better. I was stumbling around and wondering if I'd ever be able to icon again.

October 2012 - 31 icons


Don't let the monthly count confuse you, most of the icons I posted in October were cropped from a Teen Wolf picspam at my personal journal. I tried to include variety right here despite that fact though. So wow me and yellow have a secret thing going on that I don't even know about or condone. Yellow is like the thorn in my side I don't even intend to use it but it sneaks up on me and takes over everything. Not that I have much of a problem with it. I'm warming up to yellow. I really like #1, 3, and #6. I like the lighting that I used this month. I didn't use much as far as light blobs went, I just went strictly curves. I sort of found that a lot of my stuff felt cleaner and brighter, and that the colors looked more crisp. There's a simplicity about these icons that I love.

November 2012 - 59 icons


I got a burst of inspiration this month! I also came to terms with the fact that I really love negative space. It's actually strange how I never realized it before but I have a feeling that I'll be making more negative space icons in the future. Teen Wolf awesome-ness all around! I like these icons! The reason a lot of these even exist are because of mm3butterfly's textures. They really inspired me to icon. Me, vibrance, curves, and gradients have been having a foursome to be honest. It's been quite lovely. Also Lydia Martin. The presence of her face and hair does half the work. Without pretty girls to icon I'd be nowhere. I feel like I was at a good place in balancing clarity and softness in my work. Of course there are some misses since I still have so much to learn and a long way to go but I was really pleased with the work I made in November especially when I compare it to my work from January. I also won 3rd place in Best Up and Coming Maker in November which made me absolutely explode with feelings of happiness and excitement. I felt warm and tingly and I want to yet again thank everyone who voted for me.

December 2012 - 10 icons

It's been a busy month so I haven't had much time to make icons in December. The few that I have made I've been pleased with. More vibrance, gradient overlay, and curves were used. #1 makes me happy because I like the shadows on her face but the light and color in her hair. #2 is one of my favorites because Martha Jones but also because I was able to fool around with it for like two hours without making the image quality go to absolute crap. Doctor Who was not in HD back then and trust me it's so distressing when working with caps that are so grainy and blurry that you want to cry. I also like the colors I used and the lighting. I love the yellow and textures I used in #4.

I probably won't be making any more icons this year seeing as I haven't been in the mood this week and this is the last week of December. All in all I think this was a very good year for me! I made so much progress in my opinion! Some of my stuff is cringe-worthy but some of it really makes me proud. I don't regret my mistakes at all because they lead to down the long, wonderful, and colorful road that I'm on now. Most of all I think my coloring has improved. Hopefully in 2013 I will be able to improve at composition and text. That stuff is so intimidating and scary *shivers*.

OKAY. So I haven't posted icons in forever. Mostly because I haven't been inspired to make icons. I've been making two here and there, and then not making any for weeks at a time. Made in Photoshop CS5

I start out with this as a base:

This is from the episode 6x09 Night Terrors. I love the way Amy's hair falls in this scene so it was definitely hard to resist cropping it in its entirety.

Next I duplicate the base and set it to Screen. Then I duplicate that layer and set it to Soft Light. I blur the Soft Light layer using Gaussian Blur on a radius of 1.5 pixels.

After that I stamp the layers using Command + Option + Shift + E (I use a Mac but for a PC, it would be Control + Alt + Shift + E) and apply Smart Sharpen to the stamped layers on these settings:

The icon should now look like this:

Next I create a new Color Fill layer. I fill it with the color #a26200 and mask the layer until the color fill only affects the area around Amy's hair. Depending on how lazy/industrious (I'm lazy) you are, you should have something resembling this:

Great! So now I take this texture from lumsx, I clip it to the Color Fill layer, and set it to Screen.

Then I take this texture from rebel, I clip it to the same Color Fill layer but above the last texture, and set that to Soft Light.

The icon now looks like this:

After that, I draw some vertical lines on a new layer in #000000/black and various shades of grey and I clip it to the Color Fill layer above both texture layers. I set that layer to Soft Light. The icon now looks like this:

After that I take this texture (honestly I don't know who made it) and clip it to the Color Fill layer above all of the previous clipped layers and set it to Soft Light on 47% opacity and 100% fill.

Next I paint white blobs over Amy's face in a new layer set to Overlay on 78% opacity and 100% fill. I also paint some around the edges of her hair. The icon now looks like this:

After this I make a new Color Fill layer of #262020 set to Screen on 100% opacity and fill. Then I stamp the layers and set that layer to Soft Light on 53% opacity and 100% fill. Next I create a new Gradient Map layer of #000000/black to #ffffff/white and set that to Soft Light. I clip that gradient map layer to the stamped layer and set the gradient map layer to 52% opacity and 100% fill. My icon now looks like this:

Next I create a new Photo Filter layer of the color #ec8a00, on a density of 25%, and with Preserve Luminosity checked. This adds more warmth to Amy's skin and takes away some of the yellow to bring more of a peachiness to her complexion.

The icon now looks like this:

Now I take this texture (I don't know for sure who made it) and add it as a new layer and set it to Screen.

Then I make a new Levels layer and set it to these settings:

RGB: 0, 1.00, 255
Red: 49, 1.00, 255
Green: 30, 1.00, 253
Blue: 22, 1.00, 248

The icon now looks like this:

Next I make a new Vibrance layer and adjust the settings to Vibrance +33 (I don't adjust Saturation) and I set the layer's mode to Color.

Then I make a new Levels layer and set the RGB levels on these settings:

RGB: 0, 0.73, 255

The icon now looks like this:

After this I draw some strands with a hard, small, white brush to eccentuate Amy's hair and I add some white blobs to her clothes and face to make them a bit brighter. I do this all on layers set to Overlay on various opacities and fills, depending on how I want them to look.

Then I add black blobs to the top of the icon around Amy's head to make it a bit darker. I set those to Soft Light.

My icon looks like this:

Finally, I just basically stamp all of the layers and arrange them on a new canvas in some strange arrangement that counts as blocking (I submitted this for the blocking round at who-rumble) and I decide I'm done! No secrets here! I do believe that I may have duplicated it and put it on a soft light layer in my final final product though.

I start out with this as a base:

This particular scene in LKH is gorgeous because of the greens and yellows of the crops and also because the sky is quite expansive. But as you can see, the sky in this base is definitely gray is dark, so we'll work on making it blue and interesting.

Next I duplicate the base and sharpen it using Smart Sharpen on these settings:

That sharpens our base in a more subtle manner than when using other sharpening tools. I use these Smart Sharpen settings often when working with icons because it's so easy to go from under-sharpened to over-sharpened. The trick is finding what's right for your icon.

Next I create a New Layer and with a hard brush at about 5 px I paint over the sky of the base with the color #d9d8dd. After painting in the sky, I go to Blending Options and add a Gradient Overlay on the Blend Mode Soft Light using the standard Black to White gradient in the Linear style at an angle of 171 degrees and a 150% Scale. That adds an effect that makes the sky look as if a light source is coming from the left side of our image. Here's what the icon looks like now:

Next I create a Color Fill layer with the color #86f5ff. I set this layer to Multiply and mask away all of the bottom half of the fill, erasing the color fill where it covers the grass, Amy and Rory, the TARDIS, and the car. This leaves us with a bright blue sky. The icon now looks like this:

Now I take this texture from lumsx:

i don't know what i'd do without it and i don't want to imagine what i'd do without it.

and I paste it in a new layer and set the blending mode to Soft Light. Then I give this layer a mask. Using a soft brush at 11% opacity I slightly mask away the bottom of the texture that is covering the grass, car, Amy, Rory, and the TARDIS.

Then I create a new Color Fill layer of the color #000912 and set it on Screen.

The icon now looks like this:

I stamp my layers using Command + Option + Shift + E (I use a Mac but for a PC, it would be Control + Alt + Shift + E) and on this stamped layer I use Smart Sharpen again on the same settings I used as before.

Next I stamp my layers again and put the layer on Gaussian Blur at a 4.0 pixel radius. Then I add a mask to this layer and completely mask out the bottom of the layer that is covering the car, grass, Amy, Rory, and the TARDIS. I just wanted to further blur the sky so that the blue color and the gradient look cleaner together.

Now I add a Color Fill layer of the color #000a1a on Screen.

After that, I add a Curves layer on Normal with these settings:

RGB: [Output: 30, Input: 38] , [Output: 205, Input: 199]

The icon should now look something like this:

Next I create a new layer and use a very small, hard brush and the color #003cff to color over the TARDIS. I set this layer to Soft Light on 77% opacity and 100% fill. This is so the TARDIS appears more blue.

I create another new layer and use a soft brush and the color #9fd3a2 to color over the grass. I set this layer to Color Burn on 65% opacity and 100% fill.

This is what my icon looks like:

Now I create a new layer and use a small brush and the color #953d2b to color over Amy's hair, her tights, and the car's back lights. It's a rust color that I know will bring out the orangey reds I desire. This layer is set to Soft Light on 100% opacity and fill.

Next I create another new layer and use a small, soft brush and the color #42454b

to color over Amy and Rory's jackets. This layer is set to Soft Light on 100% opacity and fill.

I create another new layer and use medium-small, soft brush, and the color #ba976e to color over the car. This layer is set to Soft Light on 59% opacity and 100% fill. Then I duplicate this layer and set it to 27% opacity and 100% fill.

Lastly, I create a new layer and use a small, soft brush and the color #c6bf62 to draw about ten light blobs over the grass. I set this layer to Soft Light on 100% opacity and fill.

My icon now looks like this:

Now I create a new Vibrance layer and set the layer to Color. The setting on vibrance is +27 with saturation at 0.

Then I create a new Selective Color layer and adjust the Yellows. The settings are as follows:

Cyan +4, Magenta 0, Yellow +33, Black -55

Next I stamp the layers and set the stamped layer to Soft Light. I use Gaussian Blur at 5.0 pixel radius. The layer is on 39% opacity and 100% fill.

Then I make a new Color Fill layer with the color #1c1117 and set this layer to Screen.

Finally, I create a new Levels layer with the settings as follows:

The icon now looks like this:

As a final step, I stamp the layers and sharpen once more. I use Sharpen this time. I set the layer on opacity of 27% and 55% fill.

The finished product?

Photoshop and I have always had a love/hate relationship. I love it when it obeys me, I hate it when it goes against my wishes. But even when I hate it, I love it. Sometimes I think I have bad days in Photoshop and then it pleasantly surprises me.
In general, I can say that this batch is the result of when Photoshop surprises me. What started as a (literal) barfing up of Selective Color layers, light blobs, Gradients, and tears has come together to form a somewhat interesting batch of icons. Well, I hope they're interesting to anyone but me.
First up is my ten icons for my first attempt of Chapter 2 of theiconquest. I chose the Hard prompt, just because it's easier for me to choose makers who influence my style. There are literally 25+ makers who influence my icon-making style but I chose the three that came to my mind first. That doesn't mean that other makers aren't as important, or more important than the ones that I chose for this attempt, but the three that I chose are currently some of my predominant inspiration. Spoiler alert, I chose calikalie, endearest, and mm3butterfly. All of the icons I made are influenced from their coloring styles, so the ten icons for this attempt at Chapter 2 are all going to be classified as hero.
Also there are my six Sherlock icons for the icon_talk anonymous battle, and some other icons that I've made through rumbles or just on whim. There's some anime here also. :O

mm3butterfly's use of color paired with lighting is so unique and amazing in my opinion. the colors in her icons flood the subjects to the edges, glowing around them and complimenting their natural colors.

TUTORIAL #01

I start out with this as a base:

I really liked cropping my base from this scene because #1, shirtless Arthur, and #2 dramatic lighting. The light at the front of his body can be made wonderfully dark, while the light at his back and his left shoulder can be made nice and bright.

Now I do my basic "preparation" steps which are to duplicate the base twice, set the first duplicated layer on Screen, then set the second duplicated layer to Soft Light.

I blur the Soft Light layer with Gaussian Blur set to a radius of 8.0 pixels. This is what we should now have:

Yay, so Arthur's coloring looks much warmer now. If you notice before, his skin had a cooler tinge to it, but now it looks like we've got his blood flowing again. :) Also, see the contrast of the lighting of the image is already looking better.

Now I stamp the layers using Command + Option + Shift + E (I use a Mac but for a PC, it would be Control + Alt + Shift + E).

Next I make a new layer and add three layers light blobs in the color white/#ffffff. For the first layer of light, I add the light blobs around Arthur's back and shoulder to make it even brighter against the dark shadows that are nearly masking the front of his body. This layer is set to Overlay and the opacity is at 65% while the fill is at 36%. Here is what that layer of light blobs looks like set on Normal at 100% fill and opacity and next to it is what it looks like on Overlay at 65% opacity and 36% fill (the way it's supposed to be):

Now onto the second layer of light blobs. They're also white/#ffffff and I put them around and on Arthur's other arm, and against his facial profile. It will not only help brighten up that side of the image, but it will also help bring his face slightly out of the shadows, and also distinguish it more from the dull background. I added the light blobs with a soft round brush on a lowish opacity in this layer (I don't exactly remember, but think between 40 and 65% opacity). This layer of light blobs is on Overlay at %100 fill and opacity. Here is what the layer of light blobs looks like set on Normal at 100% fill and opacity, and next to it is what it looks like on Overlay at 100% fill and opacity (the way it's supposed to be):

Now for the last final layer of light blobs (for now). I add one large light blob at white/#ffffff to the top of Arthur's head, above his bangs, near the crown. The brush is a soft brush at a lower opacity (35 - 40% opacity) and the layer is to be set to Overlay. The layer is kept at 100% opacity and fill. Here is what the light blob layer looks like set on Normal at 100% opacity and fill, and next to it is what the layer looks like set on Overlay at 100% opacity and fill:

Okay, so no more light blobs for the moment. Just to make sure in case you're following along, the icon looks like this:

Now I'll stamp this layer twice and check the second stamped layer invisible. Above the first stamped layer, paste in this texture (that has been blurred and obscured beyond recognition, so I have no idea who made it! please tell me if you know who did!):

I set the layer with the pasted in texture to Screeen. Remember, we stamped a layer before, so there should be one above the texture layer. I make this layer visible again and set it to Multiply and change the layer's opacity to 43%. Now here is what I have:

Next, I add a Color Fill layer of the color #060707. I set this layer to Screen. It stays on 100% opacity and fill (in case you were wondering).

After that I add another Color Fill layer of the color #898989. I set this layer to Soft Light. It also stays on 100% opacity and fill.

I add one more Color Fill layer of the color #0e0025. I set this layer to Screen. It stays on 100% opacity and fill.

Here's what my icon looks like after those layers:

It looks like we've moved backwards! Everything is washed out and boring and ugh no the shadows and the lighting aren't being contrasted in the way that I want them to! But never fear, we're still going in the right direction to achieve the icon coloring and lighting that I want.

Now I add a Curves layer. The settings are as follows:

RGB: [Output: 15, Input: 41] , [Output: 255, Input: 237]

The icon should now look like this:

Now, stamp the layers. Set that layer to Soft Light and use Gaussian Blur on it at a pixel radius of 8.0. Then, make a new Gradient Map layer in the standard Black to White gradient and clip it to our stamped and blurred Soft Light layer.

Now I change the opacity of the stamped and blurred layer to 59%.

This is what I now have:

Now I want more warmth. What I do when I want more warmth (especially in the skin) I add a Photo Filter layer in the color #f08800 on 25% density with Preserve Luminosity checked.

Let's all just pretend that we see a difference. Let's just pretend.

Last but not least I add one last light blob layer. It's white/#ffffff near the left side of the icon, against the profile of his face. It's also using a soft brush at a low opacity (like 45%). Set this layer to Soft Light at 46% opacity and %100 fill.

This is the result:

It can be sharpened as one pleases, but personally I like it pretty much as it is. :D

Q&A in which I ramble about trying to answer questions I've received
from deternot and wickedgrdn at the current Ask The Maker activity over at icon_talk.

Luckily I remember almost exactly what I did to each of these icons, so it should be pretty easy to explain to you! Let's hope for the best.

In general, my lighting technique consists of a combination of brushwork (with my handy dandy tablet though no one needs one), light or gradient textures, and merged Soft Light layers set on Gaussian Blur. It all really depends on what I'm feeling like doing. Sometimes I use one or two techniques, sometimes I use all three.

For the first icon, the Amy Pond in 5x02 The Beast Below, I started out with this as a base:

The base has just been cropped down from a larger cap that I got at disparue.org which is sadly, no longer around. Sniff, sniff. Gone but never forgotten.

So most of the time I duplicate the base and set it to Screen then duplicate it again and set it to Soft Light on Gaussian Blur at an 8.0 pixel radius. This icon was no different, that's what I did to "prep" the base.

The icon should now look similar to this:

Now the red in Amy's hair looks more prominent, and so do the lights and shadows that are so wonderfully found throughout her locks. I can now see what I want to play up and what I want you to pay less notice to. I swear by hair porn so obviously this crop and even this scene was chosen with that in mind.

After this, I stamp the layers we have so far by using the shortcut Command + Option + Shift + E on a Mac and what I believe is Control + Alt + Shift + E on a PC, and that basically copies every layer we have so far and pastes it all into a new layer. I do this because later I might want to sharpen my base without ruining anything I've already done, just in case I want to go back and make some changes.

After this I add white light blobs to Amy's hair in a new layer. I basically add them wherever light is already hitting her hair. I just want to dramatize it and make it even more noticeable. I set this layer on Soft Light at 88% opacity.

This is what the light blob layer looks like on top of her hair before I change the blend mode from Normal to Soft Light and next to it, is what it looks like after I change the blend mode:

Next I just added a black blob to Amy's face because I thought it looked a little too washed out. I added it to her face on the Soft Light blend mode and set the layer's opacity to 64%:

After that, I'm ready to play with the red in Amy's hair. I add the color #280101 a Color Fill layer set to Screen. Then I add two light textures by lumsx and set them on screen.
These are the textures:

First I add the red texture in a new layer, distort and stretch it a bit until most of the white + light pink colors aren't visible, and set it to screen. Then I add the brown one in a new layer as is and set it to screen as well. The icon now looks like this:

Obviously the icon is lacking contrast, it's washed out, and it looks quite terrible. So I take both of the textures we just added and make them invisible for a sec by checking the eye next to each layer. I also turn the color fill layer invisible as well. The layers should look like this now:

I'm back at the image before I added the two textures and the color fill. Now I stamp all the layers and paste it on top of the three layers I just checked invisible. So it's now above the Color Fill layer and the two texture layers. (I am so confusing aren't I?)

I set this stamped layer to Multiply and make the Color Fill layer and the two texture layers visible again. I turn the opacity of the stamped layer to 56% and now the icon should look like this:

Now I stamp the layers again. I set the stamped layer to Soft Light on Gaussian Blur at a pixel radius that I thought looked good at the time. So if you're trying to recreate this icon just use your own opinion on what looks good. (That's code for I don't remember what my Gaussian Blur settings were).
Now duplicate that Soft Light + Gaussian Blur layer. It'll probably look too saturated, right? So set the opacity of that layer to 34% and clip a default black and white Gradient Map Adjustment Layer to that layer. Here's what your icon should look like, and here's what your layers should look like:

Next I just did a lot more coloring with Selective Color, Curves, Levels, Vibrance, and I painted a flesh toned color on Multiply over Amy's face. I added a couple more textures, and drew some strands of Amy's hair, just to draw even more attention to it. As you can see, I wanted to bring the yellow out in Amy's hair while also keeping the auburns.

The second icon is Amy Pond in 6x10 The Girl Who Waited. I start out with this as a base:

Next I duplicate this layer and set it to screen on 100% opacity and 100% fill, then I duplicate it again, and set it to screen on 38% opacity and 100% fill. Finally, I duplicate it once more and set it to Soft Light on 100% opacity and 100% fill. I use Gaussian Blur at 8.0 pixel radius on the Soft Light layer.

Then I stamp all of the layers and sharpen the stamped layer as I see fit. This is what it looks like at this point:

Next I add gray light blobs on a layer set to Overlay over Amy's hair. I put the blobs over parts of her hair where light is already noticeably hitting. It adds depth and shine. I also add a light blob over Amy's face to lighten it up a bit. This is what the blobs look like over Amy on Normal:

After this, I go about coloring Amy and bringing some colors out. I put a Photo Filter over her to add more life to her skin and background, and I add a Color Fill and Curves to Amy to bring more color and contrast out of her hair. The icon now looks like this:

The icon is now a lot warmer, which is what I was going for. Next I add a light texture by lumsx to bring more light and more color to Amy's hair (If there's one thing you should know about me, I use textures to color WAAAAY more than anyone should). Here's the texture but I rotate it 180 degrees, blur it a bit, set it to screen on Amy's hair:

After setting the texture to Screen, Amy's hair looks like it's going in the right direction but her shoulder is too bright for my liking so I add a black blob set to Soft Light on her shoulder, making the coloring and lighting there more natural.

Next I turn the black blob's layer AND the light texture layer invisible and stamp the layers below it. Then I bring that stamped layer above the two layers I just made invisible and set it to Multiply. I make the two layers visible again and change the opacity of the stamped layer to 44%. (I don't know how to not be confusing, I'm so sorry) Here's what the icon should look like now:

After this I just do basic coloring and brushwork. I paint the background more tan because I think it will compliment Amy more, and I add more light around her hair. I also smudge out some pixellation that happens around her hair. I add some textures as well.

The third icon asked about is of Amy and Rory and it's from 5x01 The Eleventh Hour. I start out with this as a base:

That base has already been duplicated, set to Screen, duplicated again, and set to Soft Light. I can't remember/tell if I put a Gaussian Blur filter on the Soft Light layer though (I know, I know I suck).

I add a light blob around Amy's head and around Rory's head just because I think their heads could be more pronounced:

Next I just color the icon. I like playing with blue and cyan, so I add a dark blue color in on screen and that helps bring the blues and purples out of the image. Especially the blue in Rory's scrubs. The blue will also add magentas. Lots of selective coloring and nitpicking brings us this:

I guess I decided on an aquamarine like cyan idk! :3
Next I add a light texture (I don't remember the texture tbh!) and the icon looks like this:

Then I stamp the layers and set the stamped layer to Soft Light. I Gaussian Blur it at 8.0 pixel radius. The icon looks like this:

Next I add this texture by deny1984 , flip it, blur it, and set it to Screen on 64% opacity.

After that, it's just really selective coloring and levels! I'm so basic!

Final Thoughts:

The way I did my lighting in the Amy Pond The Beast Below icon is how I do it most often. It may seem complicated (does it?) but it really isn't. It's a ton of fun.

Okay, sooo my text use. I don't use it often on icons, because I never know what to put! I use it more often on tumblr graphics, but I hope I can explain my thought process well enough. :)

As far as wording and what to say, unless there's something in my head that won't leave me alone, I don't put text on an icon. I try not to use character's names or overused lyrics or phrases. Lately I have been wanting to use what I think are powerful lines from a show such as in these four icons.

times new roman (?), twentieth century, levi marker, arial (?),
and rockwell

I almost always blur my text when using it in icons. It's probably because I can never decide on an anti-alias setting, so I just get lazy and opt for the soft, always looks good, simple blur.
In every icon but the bottom left, all I did was blur. In the bottom left, I blurred but what I did to get that shiny effect is make the text white, blur the text layer, set to soft light and duplicate until text is visible and shiny as desired. For more info on that, I did an entire tutorial about it here.

As far as arrangement and stuff, I usually just like to have clean lines. My arrangement usually depends on which part of an icon needs an extra oomph to draw the eye.

I don't play around with spacing too much. I really only do it with Times New Roman or if I'm trying to make the lines of my text really straight, neat, and linear. I'm so boring with text!

Sometimes I'll use a blending option on the text layer like Drop Shadow or Gradient Overlay, that helps make the text pop off the image and it looks really pretty sometimes.

Those are honestly my text secrets (are they secrets? idk!)

The following icons are my twenty for Chapter One - Main Quest of theiconquest . Also there are some alternates and random icons that I've made for rumbles and icontests over the past few weeks. I also decided why not link to two tumblr graphics I ended up making instead of icons Idk idk.
I originally planned on making 25 icons for Chapter One but then all of a sudden I lost my motivation to icon Merlin and Doctor Who and I started writing fic! So, because I want the batch to be consistent (you never know with me!) I decided to just post the ones I finished right now. :)
As far as this batch goes, I am super proud of it. I don't usually ever attempt complex icons and honestly they came out better than I would have imagined. I also started experimenting with crops. If you look at my earlier icon posts, you'll see that I had focused a lot on center crops. I wanted to try others, and in this batch I definitely did. I learned a lot about myself while making these icons.

23 Doctor Who Icons | Series 5 + 6

It's funny how every single time I have opened photoshop I've meant to icon other shows I watch. Game of Thrones, Merlin, Sherlock, Luther, Downton Abbey, Supernatural, and even my animated fandoms are lacking so much love. I'll look through caps of all these shows, beautiful caps mind you, and I'm not inspired by anything. So I race back to the caps from my favorite show, Doctor Who. I always find myself iconning the serials that were done in HD by the way. I should definitely do the other ones, I need some more Ninth Doctor in my life.

These icons weren't made for anything in particular. But I do like to think of this batch as themed. It's me trying to use more vibrant colors and to play around more with depth, light, and shadows. I tried to use every color at least once and let me tell you, it was HELL making that green Amy x Rory icon because I am so afraid of the colors green and yellow (they go wonky on my laptop when they leave photoshop half the time) but I am pleased with every single one of these icons. My favorite color to use is (can you guess?) blue/cyan. Blue is such a gorgeous color I could SCREAM I just want to lick those blue icons.

My crops are still mostly boring. I did try new ones. Or rather, I tried to try new ones. When in doubt I do what I know though. Which is also why I have not yet journeyed into the realm of complex icons.

I'm happy with these icons. I'm very happy with them.

This is my first texture pack/batch. They follow no specific theme or style, they're just what I created and came up with. They're mostly textures that I like to find in packs. I'm extremely fond of grainy textures and textures that are black, so you'll find a food amount of them here. There are also a few colorful textures (which I love as well) and textures that resemble torn paper. I think the variety is good for my first pack.

The following are my 20in20 claim of Amy Pond from Doctor Who, and 10 alts. This is was done for Round 9 of inspired20in20.

I'm on the fence about these. The challenge of being in a community like inspired20in20 is to push your boundaries and make you experiment with new things. Hopefully this will be effective in helping you grow as an artist. I do think that I learned a lot of new things while making this batch. Firstly, I have three solid pale colorings. I've never made a pale coloring before. Secondly, I experimented more with crops. I'm still very much a person who uses center crops as a crutch, but I did experiment with different ones while making my 20 icons for this round. I'm not disgusted, is all I can say. Thirdly, I learned how to use some textures I hadn't known how to use before. So that's a plus!

I still fear sharpening, contrast, blocking, and cutting out subjects very very much.

So I finally have made some icons that I am mostly pleased with. All from the television show Doctor Who. I've been experimenting a bit with coloring methods and lighting techniques and I'm somewhat impressed with the way they came out. Also, I'm working on a texture pack and some of these icons use one of my textures or two. I'll hopefully be sharing that pack within the next week.

I've been missing Doctor Who a lot lately. :( And with the impending departure of the Ponds from the TARDIS, my heart is breaking slowly and painfully. I just love them so much! Oh Amy...
