Before Your Podcast Converts, It Has to Do This
Most podcasters think they have a content problem.
They do not.
They think:
“I need better art.”
“I need a better mic.”
“I need stronger CTAs.”
“I need better episode ideas.”
“I need to finally figure out Substack.”
And then what happens?
You open your laptop to “work on your podcast” and somehow end up deep into podcast setup tutorials, fiddling with your show description, and questioning every decision you have made since the dawn of audio.
That spiral is not about tech.
It is not about monetization.
It is not even about your platform.
It is about trust.
If your podcast does not build trust, your listener is not crossing into your offer.
That is why in this week’s episode of The Substack Podcast Studio, I pulled us back to the T in TLC: Trust.
Because before your podcast converts, it has to do this first.
It has to make your listener feel seen.
Why Information Is Not the Problem
Your audience does not need another episode stuffed with tips.
They need perspective.
They need that moment where something clicks and they think:
“Oh. That’s what’s been happening.”
That is the moment they remember you.
That is the moment trust begins, the moment podcasting starts doing its real job.
Not entertaining.
Not performing.
Not piling on more “helpful” advice.
Your podcast exists to remove the thing that has been keeping your ideal client from using what they already know.
Most of the time, that thing is not information.
It is belief.
The Real Job of Trust
Trust is not built because you sound smart.
Trust is built because your listener feels understood.
There is a difference.
Impressed says:
“She knows a lot.”
Seen says:
“She understands exactly what I am dealing with.”
Seen wins.
Every time.
That is why I teach a simple trust-building tool inside the Studio called the You Know When method.
It starts here:
You know when…
That little phrase works because it pulls your listener into a lived moment before they have time to brace for another framework.
It is not stiff, polished, or trying too hard.
It is genuine.
And genuine is what gets someone to lean in.
The Paid Tier is where you get my eyes on your podcast. Come on inside to convert faster.
The Tiny Moment That Opens the Door
A good You Know When does not begin with a big, abstract business problem.
It begins with a tiny moment your listener instantly recognizes.
For example:
You know when you have the same conversation with clients over and over but don’t realize you’re sitting on a content goldmine?
I help entrepreneurs turn their expertise into evergreen podcast content so they can attract and nurture ideal clients, without burning out.
Relatable. True. Genuine.
The You Know When is also doing something deeper.
It points to the heavier struggle underneath: You do not yet have a trust strategy for your podcast.
Your message is not yet building belief.
This Is Where Podcasters Get Weird
The second people hear, “Use stories in your podcast,” some of them start acting like they have been drafted onto a TEDx stage against their will.
Now they think they need:
the perfect story
the perfect phrasing
the perfect emotional arc
the perfect transition
Not so. The tiny moment is not the destination. It is the doorway.
You are not sharing stories because you need to become “more personal.”
You are sharing the right moment because it helps your listener recognize the deeper business struggle underneath what looks like a surface-level problem.
That is the whole point.
The Formula I Teach Inside the Studio
Here is the simple structure:
You know when [tiny human moment]?
That moment is really a symptom of a bigger business struggle.
Then you connect it to your work:
I help [person] go from [frustration] to [desired result].
That is how trust starts.
Not by flooding people with more content.
Not by over-explaining yourself.
Not by trying to sound impressive.
By making your listener think:
“How did she know?”
How This Impacts Your Profits
When trust is missing, your CTA feels abrupt.
When trust is built, your CTA feels like the next logical step.
That is where the rest of the TLC framework comes in:
Trust gets them to lean in
Leverage helps them build belief
Conversion gives them the right next step
This is why some podcasters can teach brilliantly and still not sell.
They build portions of the bridge but they don’t leverage their convictions and stand in the belief gap for their clients.
Worse, they mumble the offer, bury it under disclaimers, or mention something that has nothing to do with the episode they just taught.
Confused listeners do not buy. And they may never come back to your show. When your listener feels understood, then your offer sounds like leadership instead of pressure.
We’re Practicing This Inside the Studio
This month inside the Substack Podcast Studio, we are focusing on the T in TLC: Trust.
We are taking your real-life moments:
the tech spiral
the Canva rabbit hole
the messy notes app
the awkward “what do you do?” moment
the story you keep dismissing as “too ordinary”
…and turning them into trust-building podcast content and Substack Notes that convert.
If you want help doing that, come inside.
