It's been looming behind your back, quietly, a weightless heaviness, but you've only brushed it off with a laugh. What's to fear, with so much to do and see, places to go, people to meet?

Unattended to, it's grown and grown, darker and powerful, and it's now ready to make their move. The fun and games cease when you meet your enemy for the first time. Will you rise to the challenge?

You're in open field, you choose your weapon and your opponent. It is a free style challenge. There's no theme, there's no inspiration, there's no direction. The catch: there will be voting.

The voting will be had by class. Hero icons against Hero icons, Wizard icons against Wizard icons, and so on. You can enter up to 4 (FOUR) icons, total, in any class of your own choosing. Every icon entered is worth 5 points. You can earn 30 more for getting 1st place in the voting, 20 for 2nd place, and 10 for 3rd place. Those points will go for the winning icon's class.

Be the best warrior you can be. You have two weeks.

As you've been told in this post, we'll be having a shake up in our Guilds, and it's starting today.

Those who haven't yet participated in the Icon Quest, having zero points, will receive a notice soon. You'll have one more week to earn points and not be kicked from your guild (please notice we're talking about the Guild only, and not the Icon Quest! There will be no one kicked from this realm as long as I have my moustache!)

This is also your chance to change Guilds if you're unsatisfied with yours, or are simply looking for new airs. Please leave a comment in this post if you wish to move to another Guild by next week. Comments are screened! Please notice you CANNOT choose which guild you'll be in, we'll randomize and redistribute the players in between the guilds.

Players who are removed can comment to the same post above if they want to try again, but once more, there's only a chance they'll end up in the same Guild.

KING'S SPEECH ♕ THE ICONQUEST IS BACK!

After a long, cold and dreary winter, the Castle of a Hundred Square Pixels is once again scurrying with clerks, arms full of papers to file and work to finish! New births and immigrants have been tallied, the Roy G. Biv Market administration has been hard at work clearing up the market grounds, and the historians of the Iconliseum have been burning the midnight oil documenting the glorious battles that have been fought.

The groundhog has not seen his shadow today. The earlier buds of spring are blooming. And The Icon Quest is back full force!

As of now, all backlogged points should be updated, so please check yours as soon as possible to make sure they are correct, and come back to us if you find any mistakes. To avoid spamming, there won't be comments in each individual thread, but they shall start again from here onwards. Ichronicles, the Icon Quest Newsletter, shall start running again weekly to mark the beginning of each new week.

A huge thank you to all of those who offered to help at these fair lands, there were many and this questmaster is happy to see how many of you care about this community! A couple have already been approached to handle some tasks around the realm, and are working full time to deliver you a nice experience, but an honest, special heartfelt thanks to each one who volunteered. If it's necessary, this Questmaster might bother you asking for more help from the list above, in case you're still interested.

We're also planning to have a Guild clean-up and re-match in a month's time, to balance the number of active player in all guilds. All those who signed up prior to January 1st, 2013, and still have zero points by March 2nd, will be dismissed from their guilds. This is to open up space for active new players or ones who wish to switch guilds. More information on guild changing will be given by then. Please use this month to have some fun participating and avoid being de-guilded.

Some of the Chapter Five mystery bags seem to ahve been taken down, if yours was one of them and you can't access it, please let me know through a comment or a PM so I can re-send it to you!

Due to there seeming to be a maximum amount of pigeons I can send off in a given day (pigeon labor laws, who knew such a thing existed?!) there may be a possibility that your bag will be sent through a comment. You will be replied to with a generic comment that reads:

Greetings, adventurer! This is a temporary comment which will be edited in a few short moments to include your mystery bag! If you have any troubles receiving your bag through this method please let me know through the question thread above or the new comment I will leave you at your thread.

The comment will then be screened and edited to include a link to your mystery bag. Provided you receive LJ notifications via e-mail all should be well but should you not be able to access your bag then please send me a message or reply to my (unscreened) comment.

Chapter Five ~ Main Quest

Do excuse me if my mustache is not on its best behavior this evening, you see it got a bit wet from all of my tears upon seeing this. To those who nominated either myself or theiconquest and voted, thank you so very much! It means the world! Thank you. Gracias. Arigato. Danke. Grazie. Sasibo. Takk. This Quest Master very much hopes you continue to enjoy your adventure here!

Now for something a little more business oriented. With the holidays approaching and this castle just being much bigger then ever anticipated, it may be time to bring on some assistance for more than just my mustache grooming purposes! Could that person be you? Well please continue reading.

Duties and tasks will be determined and finalized at a later date, but as it stands, this person who comes aboard will assist in the following but not limited to:

* Profile Creating/Editing
* Points Updating (requires knowledge of spreadsheets/googledocs)
* Fortune Teller Booth
* iChronicles

How everything will be divided will be discussed, it is very unlikely you will end up doing all of these tasks but just be aware these are the tasks that you could be asked to assist in.

This next part is very important and why the break in character was necessary. If you agree to partake in this adventure behind the curtain as well as in front, you will be asked to keep your "identity" a secret as you will be made an account here. If two people are taken on, you will not know who the other person is. Part of The Icon Quest is the fairy tale/RPG aspect that was carefully and intentionally put into play from the beginning. If you accept, you're being asked to not discuss that you are in fact a helper or discuss any future plans for the community. Locked posts, social media sites, anon communities, nothing of the sort. This may seem a little extreme but I can only hope those that do sign up have enjoyed the ~mystery behind the mustache and would like to help in keeping it intact.

KING'S SPEECH ♕ NOTICE

Greetings, Adventurers!

Let me first apologize for the delay of things around the castle. It comes down quite a few things, some things that were out of my hands and others that were. My sincerest apologies! A few things will still be up in the air for the near future, and it is with this information that I thought best to put the castle on a short furlough!

Everyone is still free to continue to enter all of the open quests at the moment, this gives many a time to catch up or finish up sets. You're still free to participate in battles as well. However, points, profiles (sign-ups*), and so on will not resume until Dec 1st. You must still abide by weekly deadlines on quests (a new week starts every Saturday at 11pm EST). Along with giving your Liege Lord some time to tie up loose ends, you're also free to take this time to participate in numerous other activities going around Livejournal Land** at the moment. This is also a great time to re-kindle with your guild. ;)

Again, I am most sincerely sorry for this but I do hope you all understand! The second leg of the first chronicle will commence on Dec 1st with Chapter 5!

Chapter Four ~ Main Quest

Many paths lead to and through an adventure. Can you follow them all at the same time? Not in this Chapter! Your icons for this challenge need to be extreme, all or nothing, crazy or nada. Pick a side and make your icons represent it entirely. Nothing lukewarm, so-so, let's-meet-in-the-middle. Make a stand, make a statement and start on your path.

Option A: Go Crazy or Go Home
Complexity in compositions, out-there croppings, neon, vibrant and trippy colorings, general weirdness, all the textures you can fit in.
For this option you can make ONLY Wizard and Bard icons.

Option B: Less is More
Minimalistic icons. Negative spaces, clean compositions, fake backgrounds, natural, pale or muted colorings, black&whites, few or no visible textures.
For this option you can make ONLY Hero and Rogue icons.

BONUS: I can't decide!
If you're One Of Those People, you can and will make both options. However, your batch MUST have 40 icons and MUST be equally divided, 1/4 for each class, no exceptions. Your points will also be equally divided between the four classes.

Chapter Three ~ Sidequest

Change comes, but not always in an obvious way. Sometimes it sneaks up on you, slowly, until it's unmistakably there and you've barely even noticed.

For this challenge you'll make a gradation, but with icons. Two icons with two predominant colors (i.e. red/blue), or different tones of the same color (i.e. pastel yellow/vibrant yellow), will be on each end of your set. The icons in the middle will make a soft gradation from the color in one end to color in the other. You can make each icon with a predominant color, slice your icons with different colors on each half and pass the colors on to the next, or something else you think of (be creative!).

Each gradient set must have a minimum of 5 (five) icons. Use no more than three colors in the same set (no rainbows this time!)

KING'S SPEECH ♕ BATTLE POINTS AND OTHER ISSUES

Greetings, adventurers! Many a subjects, hopefully relevant to your interests, shall be discussed today. I ask you to please read this and share your thoughts :{) Apologies beforehand for the long wall of text!

♦ Battle points, finally! ♦
First of all, the long awaited decision regarding battle points! Many (and by "many" I mean about 80% of those who answered the survey) expressed discontentment about the way those points are handled and calculated, to a point where this Questmaster decided a change was needed. Thus, a survey was conducted to gather all of your opinions and avoid further unpleasantries.

Up until now, the points earned by each battle participants were counted for all icons in the battle, made by them or not, which lead to lots of points being earned in a single battle.

From now on, every participant only earns points from icons made by themselves. Each icon will be worth 4 points.

This Questmaster happens to think that a battle forces participants to work with caps they might otherwise not have chosen. The resulting icons should, by this logic, be worthy more than a regular icon a participant made while choosing every element by him/herself.

While 4 points per icon seems a lot at first glance, I'll direct you to the Main Quest of Chapter Two, where a single icon was worth 5 points. As you wade through the many challenges, many points and many battles still to come, you'll see that 200pts is a quite small and achievable number, and no large gap at all.

This way, two problems are solved: firstly, the distortion between points from the earlier battles and new battles won't be so huge/will be fixed quickly, and secondly, there won't be complaints about earning points for icons not made by you.

The points already earned and banked won't be taken away. They've been fairly and correctly earned, and it wouldn't be fine to change them retroactively, since a change of rules wasn't in the plans by then.

Another thing that shall be dropped is the Forfeiting rule. The 50pts penalty worked in a setting where not finishing your icons would keep all your battle partners from earning points, since the overall number of icons would be lower. Now, those points depend only on you, and, since you'd be the only one losing (or rather, not earning) points, there's no motive to take points away.

This is not a reason to sign up to multiple battles and not finish! We trust you to keep participating and finishing all battles you sign up for.

I ask of you a little thinking and perspective, instead of focusing solely on rankings or points. Unfortunately, NO decision will please everybody, but this questmaster needs to choose an option that brings most benefits to the community as a whole. This was the best we could come up with/the less upsetting for most people, and I ask you to try and understand why it's been done.

After this annoucement, point banking of the overdue battles will start in a couple of days, and all the battles that haven't been banked yet will be calculated this new system.

♦ Technical troubles (a.k.a Franko went loose again) ♦
The points spreadsheet isn't working as it should! And it's not even my fault :{c

Our points spreadsheet is hosted on Google Docs, and is built using a function (=X!$C$R) that autopopulates data from an origin spreasheet (X) to others, in a way that this questmaster doesn't need to input the same values in every spreadsheet and leaves less room for errors.

Everything was working just fine until a couple of weeks ago. For some unknown, mind-boggling reason, it started not to work at all. The data still fills itself, but doesn't allow any operations, such as adding the content of populated cells (used in the Guild sheet) or sorting (what makes rankings viable).

We've tried contacting the Google support team, but had no answer up until now (sidebar, this is why this post took so long, we've been waiting for a call back but none came).
This questmaster unfortunately isn't a technology wiz, and could use some (or rather lots) of help from you, more skilled folks, in solving this wilde problem!

It is a truly upsetting matter since it messes with one of the Icon Quest cores, the points system/rankings. Please bear with us until we find a fix or a better way to calculate your points :{c Suggestions or solutions would be really accepted and welcome right now!

♦ Get social ♦
The Kaleidoskope Fair is first and foremost a social community! While it's being used by you adventurers mostly for promoting your posts, it can and should also be used for social activities (discussion posts, inspiration posts, friending memes, et all). Think a IQ-related icon_talk, 20insp_talk or more_inspired.

Don't feel intimidated by the pimps and start interacting with your fellow makers! Try inspiration posts for challenges, ask for help, play games, talk about your progress (or lack thereof) in the Quest. The Icon Quest gives you the space, the content is entirely up to you.

To stay updated with the social posts at The Fair you can check and track the ~social tag (Under "Someone posts an entry tagged" scroll down to "~social" and check "Email").

If you're shy or would rather start small, you can try posting about any subject (including not icon-related, such as watchalongs) in your guild! Your Guild is your Icon Quest family, try going to them if you need help with challenges, want to discuss something or are in the mood for a chat.

♦ Points upkeep ♦
Have you noticed a mistake in your points, or your own count doesn't match the spreadsheet? Fear not! Comment to this post (find it later through a link in The Castle's sidebar) and the CAMALOT (CAstle MAnagement Lords -or Lollipop, still under discussion- Team) shall recalculate them and get back to you in a couple of days. It would help a lot if you could also provide links to all ocasions where you earned points, which will make the job quicker and bring you results sooner :{)

Sometimes when you bring it to attention on a challenge post, the comment gets buried in the huge amount of other comments, and might pass by unnoticed. This way you can call the Questmaster's about any mistake and your points shall stay right and tidy. Don't worry about being a bother, this is what we're here for!

♦ The squeaky wheel gets the grease ♦
Once more, and I shall always remind you, that any concern, mistake, suggestion or trouble that might come you way at theiconquest can and should be brought to thequestmaster's attention before anything else. The Questmaster is always, always open to complaints or suggestions, and willing to help you. It's really not a carelessness or snubbing issue (the QM has absolutely nothing against no one! Well, maybe against Franko, but that's a story for another day), most likely your comment slipped through the cracks of the community, since there's a lot of information to go through every day.

If you asked a question somewhere and haven't been answered in 48h, if your points from challenges or the market haven't been banked in three days tops, if you have any other particular queries you might want to bring to the staff's attention, send a PM! Some questions require a tad more mulling than others, and that might be your case, but if a long time goes by, send your PM again and again until you get an answer.

CHAPTER THREE ~ MAIN QUEST

♦ CHALLENGE ♦
The only constant in life is change, it's been said. Even more true in a path of adventure. This time your icons must show how you, or your work, or your loved characters, have changed. For this challenge, choose a class and make the minimum amount of icons based on the provided requirements, all of which are based off the theme of Before and After.

ROGUE
Make sets with two icons from the same character/subject, one themed "before" and another "after". Before/after what is up to you [ ? ]

WIZARD
Same as above, but instead of making two different icons you'll need to include before/after in the same icon.

HERO
This challenge will reflect before/after as well, but in yourself. Make sets with two icons, one with something you used to like or do, other with something you like or do now. The before/after can be in subject aspects (characters, shows, movies, etc) or technical aspects (iconning trends, coloring, fonts, styles, etc)

BARD
Make an icon of your choice, save it, step away from it for a couple of days. Then make another, different icon from the same screencap. Submit both (or all of them, if you make more than one). Of course we have no way to know if you'll actually take a break between both icons, but the gist is to have at least two different outcomes from the same cap/image. Due to the time-sensitive requirement, Bard submissions will only be accepted after the 22nd (EST)
The variations rule still applies. Text/textless variations or only slightly different colorings/croppings won't be accepted. Your icons need to be substantially different!

KING'S SPEECH ♕ Chronicle 1 Round Table Feedback

Greeting lads and ladies! We hope ye are fairing well this day! Please gather round as there is much to discuss! The castle grounds have been open to adventurers for over a month now, and we have two full chapters under our belt. Some adventurers have been here from the beginning and others are more recent. Whatever the amount of time you've been here, your feedback is eagerly awaited, encouraged and appreciated.

♦ Castle Schedule ♦
In the past week or so, unexpected Real Life Troubles (mythical creatures rearing their ugly five heads now and then) have arisen behind the scenes, keeping the Icon Quest from being properly tended to. Many apologies for any delays that might have happened, but more than that we appreciate the patience from all parties! Worry not, however: things have been fixed and should be back to a regular pace from now on.

Speaking of regular pace, after two chapters we seem to have found our balance and a good stride to march to, in terms of schedule. We hope with this guideline you'll know when to expect things, understand how and when they work, and also have grounds for complaints if we don't keep up with it.

I'd only like to point out that, if your answering is taking a bit too long, it might be because a decision is still being made on the topic, depending on the nature of the question. Some questions need a bit more musing and moustache-twirling than others!

If it is something really time sensitive and you've seen me out and about, feel free to send a PM within 24 hours or even an email (theiconquest@gmail.com). This cannot be emphasized enough! You won't be a bother or annoying, and if you don't feel like making your identity known, leave an anonymous comment at Letter to the King (page-a-mod post, can be found at the Castle).

We understand your eagerness to see everything up and quickly updated, and we'll try our best to attend to your troubles and expectations, but please have a little patience and keep in mind there are things outside (and even inside) this realm we can't control.

The above mentioned Real Life issues also kept the Ichronicle from being posted in the regular time. Because of this, Ichronicle Volume 6 will be up Saturday the 18th and will continue as scheduled, around midnight EST every Saturday. The lottery winner for Week 6 will be announced at that time and a new question will go up!

We are always looking for ways to improve and make the Icon Quest better and better for you, adventurer. If you could please take a few minutes to answer the following questions and help a Questmaster out, it would be very much appreciated. Answer all or just a few of the questions, it is up to you. There is one particular thing we would like to bring to the table. All opinions will be considered on this matter and any decision made in relation to the contents of the survey will be announced in a couple of week's time.

Honesty is very much encouraged! Anything you've been meaning to get off your chest, now is your chance.

As it stands now, when participating in an icon battle over at the Coliseum, you earn points not just for your own icons completed but the points that everyone has earned, as a way to encourage battle participation. For example purposes, two people complete a battle with 20 icons each. That is 40 icons total, at 20 points a piece, each party will receive 80 points. What are your opinions on this? Would you still participate in battles if it weren't the case? In the form below, please place the appropriate letter at the appropriate line.

[A] Keep points as is, everyone earns the total points for total completed icons. (80 points)
[B] Keep points as is, only make the icons worth 1 point a piece. (40 points)
[C] Keep points as is, however cap the amount of participants in a battle to 5 people.
