The Journey To Gray Wolf Mountain

The Gray Wolf

Before the wolves learned balance, before the lions lost their throne, there stood a mountain no creature dared approach.

A mountain ruled by lions. A mountain feared and unquestioned.

But mountains remember everything.

At the base of one of these mountains lay a canyon of flowing rivers and fertile ground.

There lived a pack of white wolves.

The land provided for them. The rivers fed them. The valley protected them.

So they lived in peace.

Generation after generation the elders told the same story: Stay in the canyon. The world beyond is dangerous. Safety lives here.

And for many lifetimes, they believed it.

One spring, beneath a silver moon, a new litter was born.

Most of the pups were white like the others. Soft. Calm. Gentle.

But one was different.

His fur was black as night. His eyes sharp. His spirit restless.

The elders watched him.

And they whispered.

He was cast out.

Not because he had failed.

Because he did not belong.

The mountain shaped him in ways the canyon never could.

Winter hardened him. Hunger sharpened him. Silence steadied him.

He stopped trying to master the mountain.

He allowed the mountain to master him.

When the lions descended into the valley, the black wolf heard the cries of the pack that had cast him out.

He stood there a long time.

Then he ran toward the canyon.

The wolves who remained no longer saw the wolf they had cast out.

They saw something steadier. Something stronger. Something the mountain had made.

The next generation of wolves was unlike any before.

Their coats were not white. And not black.

They were gray.

Gentle, but never weak. Strong, but never cruel.

One paw in chaos. One paw in order.

The mountain was no longer called Lion Mountain.

It became known by another name.

Gray Wolf Mountain.

The mountain still stands. The fire still burns. And the Gray Wolves still climb.
