Perseverance often pays off in the fight against trafficking. That was the case in an investigation surrounding a group of teenagers at a Thai hotel.
The Exodus Road’s Thailand investigators had previously found and helped free teenagers who were being trafficked at the hotel, and based on their testimony, they suspected these were not the only ones.
Deeper investigative work quickly proved this to be true, with a trafficker readily offering up minors for sexual services. Moving quickly, our investigators notified a local law enforcement agency, which had already partnered on the related case.
Together, they were able to set up a time to move on the hotel, brokering a meeting with the trafficked teenagers. Crucially, they ensured the involvement of the child and family welfare department so that the teenagers involved would have the resources they needed.

Expanding the scope of this case was particularly significant because the two traffickers whose crimes were interrupted were still quite young themselves. In fact, initially, extensive interviewing and care were required to identify the roles of perpetrators and survivors of abuse.
Moments like these continue to offer insight into how exploitation and abuse can become seen as the only way to earn a viable income in areas that are lacking in opportunity and resources. Many teenagers do not even realize that what they are doing is harmful, or they believe it’s the only way to escape exploitation themselves.
Every case that builds on previous cases like this offers us more insight into the complex motivators and vulnerabilities that help cycles of exploitation to thrive. The survivors are now receiving restorative aftercare, while those who were complicit in their abuse will go through the justice and rehabilitation process.
