The Status Is Not Quo

When I watched "Tin Man" for the first time I had a moment when I thought, "What if they're just robots for the rest of the series?" Which would be a bold decision to make in the first season, certainly, but it is the start of a fun little game of imagining SG-1 continuing without major changes reversed. Essentially, it is a game of not returning to the status quo. So, let's imagine for a bit:

"Fragile Balance" — Mini-Jack is not a clone and SG-1 continues led by a 15-year-old version of Colonel O'Neill. Goa'uld laugh in the face of SG-1 more often than usual, but a 15-year-old Jack has a much easier time breaking out of binders and crawling through ventilation shafts. The only downside? It's much harder to push Daniel out of the way to get to the Ancient head-sucker, so Daniel is the one frozen at the end of "Lost City."

"Holiday" — Daniel and Machello aren't switched back because Machello's body dies before they finish, and Machello joins SG-1 to fight in Daniel's name. Machello fights extra hard to win Sha're back and probably never confesses to her that he's not Daniel because that's a lot to explain in the little screen time they share before she dies. "Legacy" is entirely different (and much shorter). Also Daniel never Ascends so Jack probably dies in "Abyss," Teal'c dies during "The Changeling," and the galaxy is lost by "Full Circle." Um, this AU doesn't seem to be working out too well, is it? Let's try for something happier.

"In the Line of Duty" — Sam remains a host to Jolinar and Jolinar joins SG-1. Naturally they met the Tok'ra much sooner, and Sam and Martouf have a canon relationship. Sam/Jolinar also have a much easier time navigating and reconstructing Goa'uld technology, so the F-302 program moves along much faster. PS "Divide and Conquer" doesn't exist in this timeline.

Okay, what other AU timelines can you come up with?

Fandom Grammar has always existed as a resource not only for fan writers, but for writers in general and for fans who have English as a second language. If you have a question about the English language—or colloquial differences in regional uses—please feel free to ask about it! We're always looking for new questions to answer. We're also open to fandom-specific questions such as capitalization rules for specific fandoms or how fandom-specific words are used in context. (Don't worry if we don't know your fandom, most of the grammarians are research monkeys and we're up to the challenge.)

Our typical schedule includes answering questions on Mondays, interspersed with additional content on Fridays.

I'm excited for our future on DW. We're approaching 10 years of Fandom Grammar, so we're looking to make a new home and build a foundation to last another 10 years.

Ra with an Ancient Tablet?

Friends, I'm watching "Full Circle" and I have a question for you: What was Ra doing with an Ancient tablet?

Actually I have another question: Are there any fics that explore this? Because this? This is VERY INTERESTING. Ra gets largely glossed over since he died in the movie, so the idea that he might have been researching Ancients—or even knew enough to look for Atlantis—is very interesting. Also, that sheds some new thoughts on what other adventures the Moebius SG-1 team might have been having in Ancient Egypt (because that is still a thing I think about a lot actually).

So, anyway, thoughts about this? Fics about this? We must discuss.

The Problem with Nightwalkers

"Nightwalkers" is basically an X-Files episode, which is why it's a terrible SG-1 episode. I mean, there's even that moment when Jonas and Teal'c walk into the bar and everyone turns around. That is so X-Files. (Is it "Bad Blood" that has a moment like that? It doesn't matter, 75% of X-Files episodes take place in small towns, so it could have been any of them.)

But Jonas also eats a ridiculous amount of food in this episode, and that's a thing I'm behind. Lollipop, toast, french fries in a milkshake, hamburger (with a knife and fork!—Jonas, you'll never pass as American), and a ginger ale. Yes, this episode has A+ food game.

Another positive to "Nightwalkers"? "Abyss" follows it.

Random Fact About Em: I've never written a fic set during Season 6, though I've written a fic that heavily references "Abyss." I am ready to admit by biases. I am also ready to try to write a fic set in Season 6 or that at least is based around Jonas.

SG-1: Major Character Death (Meta on Meridian)

On the off-chance someone new to SG-1 wants to read this post, this contains pretty heavy spoilers for the end of Season 5 and beginning of Season 6.

I watched "Meridian," "Revelations," and the beginning of Season 6 earlier this week and I have to say, this is how you handle character death. It's pretty remarkable that "Meridian" handles Daniel's death, "Revelations" handles SG-1's grief, and then even through the first episodes of Season 6, Daniel's name is not only still being uttered, but SG-1 hasn't moved forward. Through the entirety of "Redemption," Jack still hasn't filled Daniel's position, and it's really only when he's pushed to make a decision or be assigned a Russian that he finally admits he'd rather have Jonas. And while sometimes the writers forget they're writing for a new character, the other characters never forget that Jonas isn't Daniel. They hold Daniel's positive traits up as a measuring stick that Jonas can never meet and they completely ignore all of Daniel's negative traits (like ignoring orders, being argumentative if he thinks he's right, his self-righteousness, sarcasm...). Because he's gone, Daniel becomes defied (okay, maybe rightfully so since he Ascended), and that is so like humans in their grief. Those negative traits lose their edges and often become fond memories, "that's just how he was," or "wasn't that so like him?" But that acceptance comes at a cost for Jonas since he now not only has to be the best Jonas Quinn, but he's also expected to be the best Daniel Jackson. And, well, as much as I love Jonas, he's never going to be Daniel. (Thankfully SG-1 stops treating him as "Daniel's Replacement," and starts approaching Jonas on his on terms. It really starts with Teal'c, which is a different thing I admire and adore.)

But, back to "Meridian," which is actually the whole reason I started this post.

One of the things that is stunning about "Meridian" is that the entire episode is devoted to Daniel's death. Often when characters die it's a sudden moment sandwiched in at the climax or the end of an episode (I'm looking at you, Joss Whedon). But Daniel's death isn't meant to shock the audience. His death is "long" (in canon time he's given about a day to go through radiation sickness vs say, the immediateness of a harpoon to the chest), and the writers make use of the time by intercutting flashbacks to what happened on the planet, giving the viewers a full SG-1 story. But the real craft here is in starting the episode with the culminating event having already happened; it focuses the entire episode on Daniel dying. It is remarkably effective and gut-wrenching to watch each member of SG-1 come to Daniel's bedside to say goodbye. (I mean, Sam gets me weepy every time, but when Teal'c builds up to "And I will have lost one of my greatest friends"? *SOB*)

The very fact that we've spent the last 40 minutes building up to Daniel leaving is part of what makes his farewell with Jack so emotional—and of course Jack is the one he gets to stop the others. The direct route would have been to tap Jacob into the psychic landscape and explain why he should stop, but making Jack understand and agree is key to helping them all heal. It also eases Jack's grief in some way. From that moment on, Jack knows that even though Daniel's gone, this is what he wanted. Compare Jack with the others in "Revelations" and "Redemption." He's taking it much easier than either Sam or Teal'c (even if he doesn't want to replace Daniel on SG-1—anyone suspect maybe that's because he assumes Daniel will be back?). The last time the team buried Daniel, back in "Fire and Water" (whew, that was a long time ago), Jack was a wreck. And then when they assumed him dead in "The Serpent's Lair," they were in mission mode, but you could see Jack was waiting for the moment to fall apart. By the end of "Revelations" when Ascended!Daniel ruffles their hair, Jack's smiling because he knows that whatever else, Daniel's all right.

I often complain about some of the writing in SG-1—and Janet isn't treated as well in "Heroes"—but I have to give "Meridian" and "Revelations" credit for getting major character death right. There's a farewell, there's grief, and there's remembering that this character existed for these people and that they wouldn't quickly forget him—that they'd bring him up, reference his work, and he wouldn't just be gone. It's details and care like this that makes SG-1 feel real and keeps it ranked as one of my favorite shows.

PS There is a reason that no matter what, I will ALWAYS have an icon related to Daniel's self-sacrificing moment in "Meridian." May we all remember our convictions and how to stand by them.

GYWO is a community dedicated to helping you build a writing life. The idea was based around encouraging writers to write every month instead of just in a push for NaNo, a Big Bang, or some other event/story call. GYWO has grown to include more support for writers though challenges, prompts, and word wars, and through being a forum where writers can discuss problems and roadblocks or celebrate a success.

If you want to strengthen your dedication to writing, you should sign up. Whether or not you meet the writing goal is irrelevant as long as you are writing. Ha, Ha, Finally Archived!

I have finally—finally—started archiving my fics on AO3! :D

I had 2 up from previous ficathons, but now I've got 7 stories loaded and I'm so proud of myself. After a lot of indecision, I finally decided that I'm going to:

take my time and upload 1–3 stories a day*
try to upload stories from different fandoms each day**
immediately backdate stories I don't like so much
eventually backdate all stories, but I'd like for the good stuff to get renewed love
skip fandoms I wrote only for friends

*on days I upload any
**at some point I will run out of other fandoms because OMG I HAVE WRITTEN SO MUCH SG-1 FIC

I'm still deciding what to do with drabbles (grouping vs not)—but for now I can start uploading all the longer fic or the fic that is So Good It Must Stand Alone.

Also, because I just CANNOT stop myself, I'm doing a read on each story before posting and cleaning up some language and punctuation. It's not much, just enough to give my older stories a clean polish. (OMG there are so many semi-colons.)

Since I'm technically new to AO3, I have some QUESTIONS.
- If there's no collection for a ficathon (specifically J/D Ficathon XI), is it kosher to list that in collections?
- How do you let someone know something is in a season if it's not tied to a specific episode? (Basically: is there a tag for that? If not, should I list the season in the summary?)
- If you click a link below and look at the header info, is there anything I'm not doing right/should tweak?

The pressure of the public eye and the stress of being on a six-week UK tour is starting to tear at them when Hex's frontman Liam starts grating on everyone's nerves—though no one's more than James's. Caught in the middle, Teddy struggles to walk the line between being James's best mate (and secret admirer) and Liam's on-stage snog. Of course it could be more than the sudden success of Hex Deflection that has James's wand in a knot....

The Breaking of SG-1 (Season 4)

Currently watching SG-1 and alternating all-caps text about Daniel Jackson to sopdetly, imthelobster, and getaway_machine. A quarter of the texts are about how snarky or pretty he is, half of the texts are about him being pure and loyal and persistent, and the last quarter usually relate to Jack in some way (because I am predictable). I'm not quite sure what year it is, but I'm enjoying the hell out of my rewatch and rekindling my obsession.

I have a lot of love for Season 4 even though Jack and Daniel are (arguably) the most at odds during this season. In fact, the season literally starts with Daniel separated from the rest of the team ("Small Victories") and there are a good many episodes in which Daniel is pulled away from the team and operating largely outside of the team dynamic ("The First Ones," "Scorched Earth," "Beneath the Surface," "Prodigy"...). And even if Daniel is with the team, there are a bunch of episodes in which he's separated from Jack ("Watergate," "Tangent," "The Curse," "Chain Reaction"...). It puts a lot of stress on the "solid foundation" of friendship the viewers have seen in the first three seasons and is probably why all the slashers freak out when Jack pushes Daniel's glasses up in "The Serpent's Venom." (Oh yes, years removed from SG-1 fandom, but you'd better believe I still remember that moment.)

I always thought "2010" was odd because of how detached the team seems in the future—and not just Jack, because Daniel seems oddly "shut off" as well. But seeing how "2010" is a conjectured future from the status quo of Season 4, yeah, that makes sense because the team is an utter mess during Season 4. Daniel gets loaned out to other SG teams more and more often—that's what he's doing in "The First Ones," and then he doesn't even appear in "Prodigy" because he's off with SG-11, which is basically his other team (and now I want to write fic about that, someone remind me of that later)—and that's the crack that allows—or pushes—Daniel to accept Ascension at the end of Season 5. It's odd that one of my favorite seasons is the season that pushes my favorite character to the side of the team dynamic. (My other favorite season—and I can't really choose a favorite between the two—is Season 7, which is the exact opposite of Season 4, melding the team into a unit as solid and co-dependent as it was in the two seasons.) Admittedly, I like tension and angst, so maybe that's part of what I enjoy about Season 4, but I do think its odd because as the season goes on it feels more and more like Daniel is estranged from SG-1. He fits in occasionally, but there are many times when his odd-shaped piece doesn't fit snuggly with the rest of the puzzle.

So, uh, yeah. I've been having some thoughts about SG-1 and story structure. Apparently. >.> What year is it?

A Brief Two for My SG-1 Flisters

Do I spoiler cut for a show that's been off the air for almost 10 years? (Also, please scream with me over that thought.)

(1) For some reason I always remember that I greatly dislike "Divide and Conquer" and assume it's entirely because of what feels (to me) like some very forced Jack/Sam-iness. And I completely forget that it is also the episode in which Martouf dies. You'd think I'd remember an event like that, and yet it surprises me every time I watch it. Weird, right?

(2) I turned my DVD back on to sit down to watch another episode and realized "Window of Opportunity" is up. I of course reacted by saying, "Woo, it's WoO!" I'd blame it on the cold medicine, only that silliness is for sure just me.
