1) What act of kindness have you witnessed (or done yourself) recently?
I couldn't think of anything at first, the days are very much flowing together for me, but then I thougth of something:
Here in Germany you need either a coin or a token for a shopping cart, and all supermarkets I frequent have now a rule you need to have a cart with you for shopping. Usually I have at least one with me when I go out, but last week I didn't have one. I was cussing to myself when a guy noticed and used one of his own tokens for my cart (he had a bunch of them). And when he noticed a guy and a girl didn't have one either he gave them one too.

2) What is your favorite memory?
I can't really think of one now. Although I remember fondly the holidays my sister and me spend together with my grandparents.

3) What activity always seems to energize you?
I can't really think of one now.

4) Did you do something recently that made you laugh at yourself? What was it?
I can't really think of something now.

5) What is your favorite inspirational quote?
"Lernen ist wie Rudern gegen den Strom, sobald man aufhört treibt man zurück." ("Learning is like rowing against the current. As soon as you stop your are drifting backwards.") I think it goes back to a chinese proverb.
My elemetary school teacher wrote it in my "Poesie Album", which is an book where your friends, family, teachers, etc. can write a verse for you to remember them by I had one when I was in school. 1. What was the best thing about 2020?
That none of my family got sick. That the only colleague at work that got sick only had the symptoms of a cold and is again healthy.

2. What lessons from 2020 will you carry into 2021?
I work better in an office than at home. But I am able to do it. I more sociable than I thought I was, and that I'd like to do more of it in 2021.

3. How did you spend your New Year's Eve?
Reading, and planning my reading for the new year. I'm glad it is over.

4. Legend says what you did at midnight on New Year's Eve/Day is what you'll do all year. So what did you do?
Reading, and planning reading. Not a terrible fate :)

5. What are you most looking forward to in 2021?
Actually just being able to go into a café and sit down and drink a coffee. Or go to a restaurant.

That’s what Nursey thinks, the first time he sees William Poindexter.

Because the boy is beautiful even though he shouldn’t be. Even though he’s doubtless the kind of person who would punch you in the face if you said the words “you” and “beautiful” to him in the same sentence.

His skin is choked with freckles. It’s potentially more freckle than skin. Not just his face, where his nose and cheekbones are so hyper-pigmented they look tanned, but his collarbones and forearms and knuckles. The close-shaved dark ginger stubble of his hair should make his ears look too big or his mouth too wide but instead it accentuates the long curve of his throat, the cup of velvet skin between the tendons in the back of his neck.

What I've been reading

Aliette de Bodard: In the Vanishers’ Palace.
This was disturbing and unsettling, however the story was not without hope. I loved all the characters, and their relationships. Highly recommended.

Makihirochi: Is Kichijoji the Only Place to Live? Vol. 2.
I really love this manga. I like the characters, and so far I haven't gotten bored with it. I love the way food is depicted, as something lustful and not shame-inducing.

Hebi-Zou, Tsuta Suzuki, Tarako (Illustrator): Heaven's Design Team Vol. 1.
This was funny and entertaining, even though I'm a little worried it might get repetitive. However, I like it enough to want to buy more volumes.

Chie Shinkyu: Wakako Zake, Vol. 1.
This was so entertaining, I love food manga. However, for those that are not interested in slice-of-life and food this wouldn't probably the manga. I will definitely buy more volumes when they come out.

What I'm reading now:

What I've been reading so far this year

Stephanie Burgis: The Art of Deception.
I loved the books I've read by Burgis so far, and this short story is no exeption. This could really have been longer though, or there should be a sequel. I want to know more about the characters and their world.

Robin Stevens: Jolly Foul Play (Murder Most Unladylike Mysteries #4).
I love this series. I love Hazel even though Daisy rubs me a little the wrong way. I'm not entirely sure why, perhaps because I rather like more empathetic characters.
I liked this book a little better than the third one. The description of the school and its students ring very much true. Even though I didn't go to school in the 30s, am not from England, and didn't go to boarding school, I did go to an all-girls school. So even through the differences this is entirely relatable to me. So looking forward to read the next book.

Martha Wells: Artificial Condition (The Murderbot Diaries #2).
I love Murderbot, like the plot and the worldbuilding. However, I can never quite connect to the other characters. I'm not entirely sure why. It doesn't matter though, I will read the other two novellas and the novel when it comes out. I really want to know more about Murderbot.

C.B. Lee: Not Your Sidekick (Sidekick Squad #1).
I liked this book. I really liked Jess and could relate to her. I love the way the relationships are depicted: Jess and her friends, Jess and her family. It rings very true to me. I'm interested in the plot and where it will go, and I will get the sequels.
However, it still feels only ok to me, but perhaps I just wasn't in the mood for superheroes.

Richard Blanco: The Prince of Los Cocuyos: A Miami Childhood.
This was my favourite book so far this year. I don't have the words why it just grabbed me so, and I will probably write a proper review for it.

What I'm reading now:

Aliette de Bodard: In the Vanishers’ Palace.
This is disturbing, but so good. Love Yên so far, she's such a great character.

C.S. Lewis: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
I want to re-read the Chronicles of Narnia. To be frank, I'm kinda bored with this, so I'm reading bit by bit.

What will I read next:

2019 Fanfiction Reading Challenge

Carrie at catonthebookshelf has the post up for the 2019 Fanfiction Reading Challenge. I found out about the challenge from isabellerecs.

So, I'm going to do this challenge this year. It can be as relaxed or involved as you like and you can set your own goals. I'm going for Unapologetic Fangirl/boy, since I do read a lot of fanfiction. Mostly I want to track my reading, and challenges are the way to go for me. We'll see how well it goes ^^;;
I set my word count for the month at 250,000 words. This seems to be very little to me, but we'll see. :)

They also mentioned the memories function which reminded me that I used this back in the day on Livejournal. ( Sometimes I feel my age :) )When I decided to try this here on Dreamwidth I noticed that I had already some created! Starting in 2010 and ending in 2012. I totally forgot about them!
I think I will go take a look what past-me found so important that I should remember ;-p

Tuula Karjalainen: Tove Jansson. Die Biographie (Tove Jansson. The Biography) [Tove Jansson, Tee työtä ja rakasta]
I really enjoyed this biography. I love the Moomins, and I wanted to know more about their author. I also enjoyed other books by her.

Hermione Ranfurly: To War with Whitaker: Wartime Diaries of the Countess of Ranfurly, 1939-45
I don't know where I've read about this book, but I'm glad I did. It was a really interesting account.

Shannon Hale: Ever After High (1). Die Schule der Herzenswünsche [Ever After High: The Storybook of Legends]
While interesting enough that I've finished it and even though I'm curious how it may continue, I won't read more of this series. I might read summaries of it though.

Kyousuke Motomi: QQ Sweeper [QQ Sweeper], Vol. 2
I really liked this volume. I like both main characters and their interaction.

Mika Yamamori: Daytime Shooting Star [Hirunaka no Ryuusei (ひるなかの流星)], Vol. 12
I'm so glad this series ended as it did. I really want to re-read it know.

What I have finished reading:

Akiko Morishima: Highschool GIrls [半熟女子 1 Hanjuku Joshi], Vol. 2
More of the same. It's cute though, and liked that they didn't draw out the drama. There's even a touch realism here.

Kyousuke Motomi: QQ Sweeper [QQ Sweeper], Vol. 1
This is by the author of Dengeki Daisy (which I still have to read). I liked it. It's about a girl, Fumi, who's without money spending the night at the old school house. She meets her classmate Kyutaro. It turns out he cleans people's souldreams from waste and critters. And Fumi has the ability to help him.
It's pretty standard shoujo fare, but I like the characters. I really like Fumi's shamelessness in her goal to catch a rich husband. And I like how she grows over the course of this volume. I think it's only three volumes, so I'm going the read them too.

Yamazaki, Kore: Die Braut des Magiers (The Mage’s Bride) [Mahou Tsukai no Yome], Vol. 2
This is so cool. I really like Chise's growth over the course of this volume. We learn slowly more about Elias and about this world. Even though Chise had a pretty bad childhood, she still knows how to be kind. She's a little passive sometimes, but she does stand up for herself and for others. And while her decision to stay with Elias may not be the healthiest, she makes it for herself.

Kanna Kii: Ein Fremder am Stand [Umibe no Etranger]
I liked this volume. And I really loved the art. There's a sequel series which will come out later this year. I'll probably pick this one up.

Saki Aida & Yuh Takashina: Deadlock, Vol. 1
This volume of yaoi is less hardcore than it could be, certainly less graphic. I still liked these characters, and I'm curious how it will continue. I'm glad I waited with reading this volume, the next will come out next month, and I'm really looking forward to it.

Kozue Amano: Aqua [Aqua], Vol. 1
This one was a re-read. I just love the genleness of this manga, and while the characters are a little stereotypical, they are really likeable. It's good to relax with this one before bed. I love the art, so detailed and interesting. It's truly a place I wish I could visit.

Genevieve Cogman: The Invisible Library
I liked this one. It wasn't overwhelming, but good entertainment. I liked the characters, especially Irene. It's great to see a female character, who puts her duty first.
And I liked the world created. I think I'll read the next volume too.
