How to make this large image to sample to make icon sized textures

Select an image with a generall colour scheme you like

Go to filter >> blur >> gaussian blur>> radius 20px (This may vary a little according to your starting image)

go to edit >> transform >> scale and enlarge the image and move it around till it looks pleasing

Open a grungy texture and set it to overlay %100 This one is by darkrose42-stock

You can find lots of grungy textures at deviantart.com. My large textures can be found at tiger-tyger.deviantart.com You can also find lots of brushes for photoshop and the gimp there.
Open a new layer >> Select a decrotive brush and stamp a few patterns on in white >> set layer to normal >> opacity %13

Open a new layer >> Select a different decorative brush and stamp on a few patterns in black >> set layer to normal >> opacity %13
