01.
(- This is a pretty good text icon. The text is centered well, there is good italic emphasis on certain words, and the different color choice for the subject--democrats--is nice. But I do think that a more matching background would have been better for text that is in a bright blue font color. In fact, a texture just like that but with the reds being light, light blue tints instead would be much better. I do think it's a very good start, but a more neutral or matching texture would be a good change.)

- Using the color from the plane stripe for the font ties the whole icon together nicely
- I LOVE the quote. Love love love it to pieces. Nice colors too.
- fabulous coloring and use of brush.

03.
- the mixture of text font and size really emphasizes what the text says nicely
- I like the font/colors/texture used.
- It really stands out from the rest: a short, simple quote, with a good choice of fonts, and an exciting 3D effect, on top of an interesting texture.
- the font selection is good for the text.

04.
(- I think this is a mostly nice icon. The placement of the text is nice, having it start at the far left and gradually end at the far right. And when it comes to being between top and bottom, the text is centered nicely. I also like the contrasting fonts. Very subtle but enough to give it a "complete" feeling, and, of course, that's a cute background (though maybe a bit too bright for the subject of the text). It's mostly quite nice. But there is one thing that I think would have made it a little, tiny bit better. The single word with a different font is "threaten," so that places emphasis on that particular word. But it seems that with that quotation--"can you threaten me later?"--that it might be better if the emphasis were placed on "later" instead. It seems to me like it is basically to imply that now is not the time and that some other time would be better, so having the emphasis on "later" might make it read more accurately. Or perhaps it would work alright with having emphasis on both of them, if the emphasis on "threaten" were still desired. Anyway, all in all, it's a good icon; I just think that emphasis on "later" could give it a bit more of an edge.)

05.
- Placing the text at a mid-west location along a compass rose is an excellent and subtle way of using the graphic to support the text
- That was a really nice touch using the compass, which is perfect considering the topic of the icon. I think it was also a nice touch to make "MIDWEST" bold. It's a very effective, subtle emphasis. The alignment of the text is also done well.
- The text is a simple and clear. The use of the compass points is witty. It might have been even nicer without the full stop (period).
- Nice colour palette - not too dull either as it is still easy to read the text and the use of the compass rose in the background is a nice touch.

07.
- The texture used seems a bit hard and rough, which goes really well with the idea of choking someone to death. Similarly, the font choice was a good one. Having the text in something soft or delicate wouldn't work at all. With this icon, the font is very perfectly a bit more of a "rough" font. And I loveeeeee the way the end of the quotation, the part in the parenthesis, is made so tiny. That seems like the sort of off-hand remark that could be made somewhat silently and under the breath, slipping out just enough to be heard. So I think having it small, while the rest of it, the part that would certainly be much more acceptable to say loudly and clearly, is large and bold and and is the first part to get our attention.
- Very lively icon with a good contrast between the big and small text; the big text uses an interesting font, makes a nice pattern, and fits well with the texture. (The only thing that's disturbing is the lower case 'i' in 'I'm' :-)
- Good contrast between text sizes and fonts - helps to emphasise the punchline.

- Nice pastel shades and amusing choice of image which doesn't overpower the icon. The shadow text could possibly be a bit closer to the original to make it easier to read.
- hilarious text! the echoing is a cool idea and it's done well.

- I love the combination of font colors and the texture. The main font color matches so well with the blues in the texture, and the brownish font color works well to match with the beige color. Of course, it has to be considerably darker to be visible, but it works well. It's really cute. And I love how there is a good deal of stuff going on in the texture while there is still the little spot that is mostly free from distraction where the text is placed and can be easily read. The softness of the fonts and the softness of the texture (very light colors and a cloud-like feel) really compliment each other well.
- This one is funny.

01.
- Nice colour scheme that isn't too overpowering. The composition is good, with interesting text placement and colour variation.
- At first I was frustrated by the language barrier... until I saw the translation. :) Even though the text is small, it has nice texture and color and placement so that the eye is drawn to it first.
- good font choice and positioning

02.
- I just love the feel of this one. The colours somehow match the wording perfectly.

04.
- The larger words and the "oh" are a bit too bold and fuzzy, but the font and style variations of the text match the phrase beautifully.
- The text just seems to pop out at you. Nice work.

05.
- it does what it says on the tin! The positioning of the text, the mixture of fonts, and the touches of colour are interesting.

06.
- Good use of texture and the variation in text size makes it easy to read and more interesting.
- The small variations in the text make it visually interesting, and the sizing is well done. Plus it's a fun quote and it fills the space nicely.

- Good combination of textures, good font colour choice as it is readable on the dark background. Plus, great text XD

- the icon has variety; the text is positioned well relative to the texture/background; the fonts are well-chosen.

- I wasn't sure about this one at first, but it seems to be growing on me. Neat idea.

- nice juxtaposition of the two fonts/font colors
- great harmony of the two fonts.
- The colouring and meaning of the text contrast well
- Good font choice, the text is very easy to read and the background, while being patterned, manages to be complementary rather complicatory.

- The image is complimentary to the text
- Interesting choice of words and good compromise between having an image but not letting it overpower the text of the icon which is the main focus.
- This is the first one that drew my attention. I like how the newspaper blends perfectly with the rest of the background. Text is well done as well.

- The coloring and texture really fit the text; the text stand out nicely, but not obtrusively.
- I don't know what it is about this one. I honestly don't. But it grabbed my attention and won't let go. I can't stop looking at it.

- the fonts are pleasing and the separation of the word "love" works well.
- Nice contrast between dark background and simple, light text. Particularly good choice of font for 'love' - the handwritten cursive is very romantic.

- The angle of the text gives the icon an unique feeling that makes it stand out.
- beautiful, dramatic colour, and an interesting use of texture and diagonally placed text to illustrate the idea 'cracking'. The 'C' could perhaps be a little clearer.
- the text and the background look like they're cracking so it matches the quote.

- The text and the texture constrast well

- very cute and simple. the yellow emphasis is perfect.
- lovely, simple design with clear text and perfect use of colour to highlight the message.

(- The location of the text makes the icon too top heavy.)

- the font seems an appropriate choice for the words
- it's the most unique of the bunch and the text is really funky.
(- The color of the "hammer" and "metal" text is too bright compared to the overall dark coloring of the icon. The color of the "strikes the" text is a good balanced color, though.)

- The grayscale coloring, and the way the text blends into the background, makes the icon feel balanced and fluid.

I'll post another challenge later today^^

For this challenge, we're going with the theme Water.
This means, you can use any text you want, as long as it relates to water (in any state - liquid, frozen, condensed).

You may also use images of water (rain drops, snow flakes...) to support the text, but make sure it doesn't overpower the text. No other images, stock or fandom, may be used.

For some information, quotes and inspiration, see water (wikipedia), water (wikiquote), snow (wikipedia), clouds (wikipedia).

After some misunderstangs about what kind of icons this contest is about, I decided to post some examples of what icons we will and won't accept. Feel free to ask questions here, we'll try to answer them as good as we can :)
(unfotunately the people who made me post this have already left the comm and will probably not see this, but hopefully it helps the rest of the members :) )

In general, this community is all about TEXT icons, which mainly means TEXT ONLY, but images to support said text are allowed as long as they are not the main focus of the icon.

a) examples for valid entries:

1. the text outweighs the image
2. simple backgound and text, with an added brush to support the text
3. using a stock image to support the text
4. the text can be small too, as long as there's nothing that distracts from it

b) examples for invalid entries:

1. 2. 3. 4 . 5.

1. this is a simple fandom icon with added text, the text just seems to support the image rather than the other way round
2. this borders on a valid already, if the stock image was more faded into the background (maybe differently colored) and the text would stand out more it could be accepted
3. the text is not the focus, the cup is
4. the text is in the forefront, but still not the focus
5. while the text is the focus, without the image it would make no sense

I may add other examples as we go, but for now that's all I could think of^^
Also, feel free to browse the past votings at this comm to see what kinds of icons have been entered (and accepted!) previously.

I hope it's all clear now, because if the arguing about the rules (which I asked you to read + understand before signing up!) continues, we may have to change the rules and not allow images anymore at all :(

And in case you've already submitted and aren't sure if your entry got accepted or not: If theres a grey "entered" behind your name on the participants list, it's a valid entry :)
