I just heard that Ronzoni is discontinuing pastina. Mac and cheese used to be my comfort food but since I have to watch my cholesterol, I rarely indulge. Pastina has become my new comfort food. The only good news is that it seems Barilla brand isn't discontinuing it, at least not yet.

Life

So Friday the 10th I got my 2nd booster I figured it's summertime and I want to see friends and enjoy life again. I had lunch with 2 friends that I haven't seen since 2019.

On Friday (the 17th) I volunteered for kitchen help for a local festival that is being held for the first time since 2019. Friday night I went to the festival.

On Sunday I started to get a sore throat and a little cough. I did a rapid test on Sunday and again on Monday (both negative). But since I was volunteering for kitchen help again on Wednesday I also took a pcr test on Monday and got the results back this AM. Yup, I tested positive! I have a call into the MD because I want to know if he recommends any of the meds that you take in the first 5 days.

Has anyone on my flist had any experience with the Shionogi drug or with Paxlovid?

My symptom, so far are mild and cold-like. Fingers crossed they stay that way.

Birthday Celebration

So, I was on call for Federal jury duty for the last 2 weeks. I had to start calling on Sunday the 23rd. I was called down on the 24th and since it was Federal, it was an hour and a half trip by public transportation to downtown Brooklyn. I was only called down one day because it was before the holiday weekend. Tuesday I didn't have to go in but I did Wednesday and it was seriously looking like I would have to come back on my birthday.

I don't know if you are aware but if you are of a certain age you can opt out of jury duty. I turned that age yesterday. So I used my old lady card to avoid going to Brooklyn on my birthday.

I had a lovely day with lots of phone calls messages and texts from my sibs, friends, and family. Hearing from my sibs is always one of the highlights of my birthday. (If I had jury duty I would have missed all my calls because Federal court confiscates your phone for the day.)

So becoming an old lady has its perks! Although I didn't love having to tell a room full of people how old I was.

13. What was the last song you listened to of your choosing? What was the last song you heard that was imposed on you (e.g. background music at a store, in someone else's car, etc.)?
My choosing was this YouTube vid of Elton John, Ed Sheeran and Cortney Cox singing Hold me closer Tony Danza. The last song I remember being imposed on me was on the TV and it was "Amazing Grace" for t=one of the NYC fallen police officers' funerals.

14. Do you play mobile games on your phone? If yes, what is the most addictive game you've played?
I'm not much of a game player, sometimes solitaire but never on my phone.

15. Do you text more or call more? Why?
Text - because talking takes up too much time. A text is over and done with no long off-topic tangents.

16. Most important in a partner or best friend: intelligence or sense of humour?
Normally I would say a sense of humor but in today's climate of conspiracy theories and false info, I am now inclined to say intelligence. Although humor is very important especially when dealing with conspiracy theorists. ~_^

FaceBook Rabbit Hole and Daily Questions

Today I got lost down a FaceBook rabbit hole. This was one of Jimmy Fallon's hashtags, # worst gift ever. I don't know why I thought this one was so funny but I was spit laughing. Maybe it's just my strange sense of humor.

10. What do you think is the best sitcom (current or past)? It's hard to narrow it down to just one but I would definitely say "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", "Cheers" and "The Big Bang Theory".

11. What do you think is the most overrated movie? IDK, I usually think most movies that are overhyped are overrated.

12. Who would you most like and least like to be stuck in an elevator with? I'm a little claustrophobic so I would hate being stuck in an elevator with anyone, even if they were the most fascinating person in the world.

I love funny vids but for some reason the way the algorithms work, they haven't been showing up on my YouTube feed.

9. Would you rather ask for help with a difficult task, or figure it out for yourself?
It depends on the task. If it is something I have no real clue about then I want to be shown how to do it, so I learn the right way. Otherwise, I like to try to figure it out for myself.

Shampoo bar Update and Daily Question

After my post on shampoo bars, I got 2 suggestions, one from susandennis who suggested a company named Love, Beauty and Planet. My 2nd suggestion was from hobbituk who suggested a company called Lush. They have a storefront in a Mall not too far from my house and I will probably check them out at some point.

4. Regardless of your age, what "old person" thing(s) do you do?
My old boss used to make fun of me because, in the winter, I wear my hat in the car. He used to say only old people do that.

Not often but when I do, I take a spoonful of sugar or a sugar cube.
Funny story- I was at the grandkid's house and the oldest got the hiccups I gave her a sugar cube. The next time I was over she told me she need a sugar cube because she had the hiccups. (Of course, didn't hear any hiccups)

6. What's the best Wi-Fi name you've seen?
At my dad's house, one of his neighbors had the Wi-Fi name -notyourwifi. I've also seen in my neighborhood (which has a very large Indian population) the name punjabjunction, which amused me.

Shampoo, Conditioner and Daily Question

I have been trying to cut my carbon footprint and have decided to try bar shampoos and conditioners instead of shampoo and conditioners in plastic bottles. I'm not sure where to begin. I like my shampoo to have a nice smell but most of these bars are bought online so you can't do the sniff test. When I read reviews I tend to read mostly one-star reviews and a lot of these bars have complaints of stickiness and residue.

So my question, dear flist is have any of you tried bar shampoos? What was your experience?

1. Do you think your country would change if everyone, regardless of age or any other current restriction, could vote? If yes, in what ways?
Yes, not in a good way. If children, any age, could vote they would just mirror their parents and wouldn't have a chance to grow and develop their own opinion. People who had a lot of kids could change the outcome of an election just by having their kids vote.

2. Is there a movie or TV show you can watch over and over again without tiring of it? Tons of shows. I sometimes prefer to watch a "comfort" show than a new show that I'm not sure where it will lead

3. If an actor who is really well known for one role turns up in another film or TV show playing a different character, do you have trouble not seeing them as their more famous character?
No, but I will sometimes compare them to their old role.

30. Do you sleep with your sheets tucked in or out? If you don't use top sheets, if you stay somewhere that does, do you prefer your sheets tucked in or out?
Tucked in, in fact, I usually sleep all wrapped up in my blankets like a burrito.

Snow and the Daily Question Catch-up

It's snowing! Blah! It started last night at 7:00 and is supposed to continue until 7:00 tonight. They are advising to not go out until the storm has stopped because of the high winds. I'm not looking forward to shoveling that mess.

Since I am just watching the snow fall, I figured it would be a good time to do a catch-up on the Daily Question.

25. How often do you stay up past 3:00 a.m.?
Never. I haven't stayed up that late since I was with the theater group and I would pull an all-nighter to finish costumes. (Which was close to 20 years ago.)

26. If you opened a business, what kind of business would it be?
I don't know probably something creative. A flower shop maybe?

27. Who was your worst teacher/professor? Why?
I had a history teacher in HS who used to teach in an all-boys school. When he started teaching in a co-ed school he didn't change his teaching techniques. So he only gave sports examples to explain history. Not being a sports fan, I was bored to tears and I always loved History. That's pretty bad when a history teacher bores a history enthusiast.

28. Who was your best teacher/professor? Why?
I had a teacher in seventh grade who brought me out of my shell. She is one of the people I credit for helping me become the person I am today.

29. If you are an only child, do you wish you had siblings? If you have siblings, do you wish you were an only child?
As anyone who has been following my lj for a while knows, I am the oldest of eight. Have I ever wished I was an only child? It wasn't always fun being from a large family but I don't think I ever wanted to be an only child. Now that I am an adult I am very grateful for my siblings and I feel very blessed that (aside from a quarrel here and there) we all get along.

20. How fast do you read? I have no clue, as I have never timed myself. If I had to guess I would say average to fast.

21. Do you like classical music? If yes, name your favourite composer(s).
In general, I am not a huge music fanatic. I enjoy music but I am not one of those people who has to have their music with them at all times. That being said I enjoy listening to classic music occasionally but I wouldn't be able to tell one composer from another.

22. How often do you check your phone? Not very often. Occasionally to look at my pictures or check a text but that's about it.

23. What is your favourite thing to eat or drink in winter?
Comfort foods mostly, soups, stews, hot cocoa.

24. If you could switch two movie/book/TV characters, what switch would lead to the most inappropriate movie/book/TV show?
I would love to see Klaus Michaelson, from "The Vampire Diaries" switched with Harry Potter. Klaus would be highly inappropriate in Hogwarts and Harry might bring some stability to Mystic Falls.

Daily Question and Other Stuff

Here in NY, Omicron seems to be winding its way down. I did order the free tests and a few more masks from a company I really like.

Because Omicron was running rampant I have been hibernating again and doing a lot of shopping online. It's Girl Scout cookie time and I order some boxes online. Plus as part of his Christmas present hubby will be getting a monthly box of nostalgic candy. When things calm down I will probably be a few pounds heavier.

I have read bits and pieces of Joss Whedon's "redemption" article. Someone should advise him to just shut up. Blaming others for your bad behavior is not the way to go. I've said this before but it's worth repeating, I would love to see the people caught in a scandal to sincerely say "I was wrong, I let my ego rule my judgment, I was a major dick and I'm sorry. I'm working hard to be a better person. I hope one day I can be forgiven for my past actions." That would be refreshing.

16. What's the most creative use of emojis you've ever seen?
I have no idea, I rarely notice or use emojis, outside of a thumbs up and double hearts.

17. Where do you get most of your news?
Usually online or TV news

18. In 40 years, what will people be nostalgic for?
I am nostalgic for a time when it was taboo to discuss religion and politics and I am sure some people will feel that way in 40 years. (Not that I will be around to see it.)

19. Do you like reality/competition TV shows? Why or why not? If so, which ones?
I do like some reality/competition shows mainly "Top Cheif" and "Project Runway" but as with most TV, I don't watch often.

I seem to be kind of keeping up with the daily questions. I am posting every 2-5 days, which is what I was aiming for when I started this and at least it's an improvement (so far) from my 2021 lj posting record.

12. What's your favourite number? Why?
6 - Because I was born on the 6th month at the 6th hour. (Only not on the 6th day)

13. Would you rather have all illicit drugs be legalized, or duelling between consenting adults be legalized?
Illicit drugs, if there were some regulations to go along with the legalization. Definitely NOT legalized dueling because here in the US guns are too readily available and people are stupid when they are angry.

14. What movie would be greatly improved if made into a musical?
"Gone With the Wind" I don't know if it would be greatly improved since it was a GREAT movie but it would be quite interesting if it was a musical. Can't you just see the leading man singing "frankly my dear I don't give a damn"?

15. What social stigma does society need to get over?
All of them!! There shouldn't be a social stigma attached to your race, gender, religion, sexual preference, weight, or disability. Come on people wake up and grow a moral compass.

8. Would you rather be able to see 10 minutes into your own future, or 10 minutes into the future of anyone but yourself?
Neither. 10 minutes isn't much time, not enough to affect any change or even to register what will happen. So, I'll pass.

9. Would you rather lose the ability to read, or the ability to speak?
The ability to speak, for sure. Could you imagine not being able to read? That means no books, magazines, newspapers, food labels, etc. No thank you!!

10. What Olympic (or other) sport would be the funniest to add a mandatory amount of alcohol to?
Definitely not a sport where alcohol would put the precipitants in danger. So, no football, baseball, soccer, basketball, etc. Maybe Ping Pong? That might be funny.

11. What do you think are three things that are pretty great or interesting about you?
I am kind, I have a sense of humor and I can be a bit quirky.

Not often, maybe once a month or every other month.

No, but when I was a kid I did try to rescue several baby birds, that had fallen out of their nest. Unfortunately, it never worked.

Appliance Hell

When I was re-doing my kitchen and bathroom I got a fridge that had an ice maker. I love my icemaker but I have had problems with it several times. During the holidays I noticed that it wasn't making ice but opted to wait to call the repair guy. It was a totally wrong move because last night right before bedtime, my kitchen got flooded. Right now I am waiting for my repair guy to come.*sigh*

In the meantime, I'll do the daily questions.

4. iOs or Android? Apple all the way. Except for my Kindle, all my tech stuff is Apple products.

5. What do you do to get rid of stress? Photoshop, reading and unfortunately eating.

2. When you are old(er), what do you think children will ask you to tell stories about?
My kids usually want to hear pet stories. Stories about the pets I had as a kid or as an adult. They never get tired of hearing the same old pet stories.

3. January 3 is Fruitcake Toss Day. Do you like fruitcake? Why does it get such a bad rap?
I like fruitcake but only the one I make myself. My mom had a recipe that had none of the icky stuff in it (citron, orange, and lemon peel) and it's quite tasty. I haven't made it in a few years because it makes a lot of cake.

I think fruitcake gets a bad rap because so much of it is truly horrible.

Life

Things in NY are really bad, they are saying one in four New Yorkers have COVID. The past week I have pretty much self quarantined since 3 people I had contact with tested positive or were exposed. It has been at least nine days since I was exposed and I have no symptoms. (I didn't want to go out and wait in a line for a test and be at risk of exposing myself again.) When things settle down and supplies are more plentiful I am going to keep a few at-home tests in the house.

I hope the experts are right and omicron fades away quickly. Most vaccinated people I know have had mild cases.

My holidays were very nice, quiet but nice. We got to see the grandkids on Christmas Eve and a few days later we found out that youngest granddaughter was directly exposed on the 23rd so anyone who was at the house on the 24th was considered exposed too. Thank goodness we are all fine.

So this year I decided to try to do the daily questions. I'm not sure I will be able to keep up but I am going to try. I might do a few days at a time I haven't decided yet.

Daily question:
1. After roughly two years now of living with various changes and restrictions brought about by the Covid pandemic, which, if any, measures do you think you will continue to do all the time? I keep hand sanitizer and a small spray bottle of alcohol in my purse and in the car, I think I will continue to do that.
