Icon Tutorial #2: Alan Smith

Tutorial 2: Alan Smith

This tutorial was done in Photoshop CS, but can easily be translated. I think...

We will be going from this to this .

STEP 1
File >> New
Make it 100x100 pixels and transparent.

STEP 2
Floodfill the first layer with black.

STEP 3
Make a new layer. Floodfill it with the colour # 866B3D. Using the move tool, shift the layer a bit to the upper right. Then change the blending mode to Linear Dodge.

STEP 4
Make a new layer. Take this image of Alan Smith and make it smaller, crop it, and sharpen it. I came up with this:

STEP 5
Press Ctrl + J to duplicate the Alan layer. Once you have the copy, sharpen it once more, set the blending mode to Soft Light and the opacity at 77%.

STEP 6
Copy this light texture onto a new layer above everything else.
Edit >> Transform >> Flip vertical to put the red on the bottom. Then press Ctrl + T to use the Free Transform tool and stretch it out (make sure that you don't stretch it too far so that the red is taking up the whole space).
After stretching the light texture, set the blending mode to Lighten.
This is what I have so far

STEP 7
Make a new layer. Copy this light texture onto it. Set the blending mode to Lighten and the opacity to 50%.

STEP 8
Next copy this light texture by colorfilter onto a new layer and set the blending mode to Lighten.

STEP 9
Make a new layer. Floodfill it with the colour # 07122D, set the blending mode to Exclusion and the opacity to 51%.

STEP 10
Use this gradient by crumblingwalls on a new layer. If you don't have it already then just copy the image I put there.
Set the blending mode to Color Burn and the opacity to 68%.

STEP 11
Make a new layer and floodfill it with the colour # D5BD91. Set the blending mode to Multiply.

For the final step I added a bit of tiny text in white and the blending mode set to Overlay. I then duplicated this layer and kept the same blending mode but changed the opacity to 36%.

This is the final result!
