For Japan

I was very saddened by the recent events in Japan, and my heart goes out to everyone that has been affected by the disaster. While I was in NYC for conference I kept a close watch on how the events were unfolding in Japan. While Tokyo is considered to be a safe zone, it still suffers some setbacks in energy and transportation; only some trains have partially begun to run again in Tokyo.
While it is true that the radiation level in Tokyo has risen, the levels are too low to pose any harm. According to the Japanese government and Nuclear Safety Officials, these levels are just higher than our regular daily dosage, around the same as we would get from taking an international flight at a higher elevation.
Despite the setbacks, people in the Tokyo area went to work and school, and everyone in the other areas such as the Kansai region remain untouched and fully functioning. Help from several other countries have arrived and are working towards recovery.
To help for a swift recovery, here are some resources I've discovered. I want to support Japan’s economy when I can and give back to the country that has given me the anime, manga and culture I love.

Google Crisis Response. - Gives links for donations, as well as latest news and realtime updates via Twitter.
20 ways to teach about the disaster in Japan. - Helpful post to understand the basics of what happened.
Q&A on the nuclear crisis in Japan. - Even more indepth information on the nuclear crisis.

Here are different charities that are involved in helping the crisis:

American Redcross.
Convoy of Hope.
Global Giving.
Herald de Paris. (for helping the zoo/aquarium animals of Japan).
Hope Letters. (for those who can't donate anything monetary, but still want to help).

Glee: 2x15 - Sexy

BRITTANY I LOVE YOU HARDCORE.

... Insert the rest of my review where I go "Brittany! 8D" "Santana! O_O" "Brittany! ^_^" "Santana! D:" "Brittany! :O" "Santana! ;~;"

I dunno why I'm so amazed over this episode, since they always alluded to Santana having bisexual tendencies. I guess since she more or less finally came to terms with it, it was rather heart-warming. And heart-wrenching when Brittany told her she despite sharing the same feelings, she can't hurt Artie.

I'm actually proud of Brittany for knowing it would be wrong to hurt Artie when she still loves him. I hate the whole hooking up in one episode, and then breaking up in the following plot device. It's getting to the point where almost everyone has dated each other. So I'm glad that this relationship doesn't seem like it's going that way just yet.

Oh this show; how I enjoy you.

Last autumn they managed to snag me with their Disney villains makeup line (LOVE my Maleficent lipstick), and now they're appealing to my love of girl power, comics and pop art with their newest color line inspired by the Amazonian hero Wonder Woman.

This newest line screams of boldness and color, which I highly enjoy. I love the prints in reminiscence of Lichtenstein in vibrant comic book colors, along with the bold packaging designs. The colors are what you would expect of Wonder Woman: electric blues, bright reds and heroic golds and silvers. If you're like me, and love colors that make a statement, this line is for you.

What I've been secretly coveting is the utility brush set in shimmering gold. I do makeup designs as a hobby, which I someday hope to turn into a profession, and when I saw this little wonder of wonders, I knew it had to be mine. It appeals to the makeup designer in me for its convenience, as well the comic book nerd in me who has always wanted her own utility belt. I mean, Wonder Woman does have the best accessories. And hey, I got my tax refund in, so why not treat myself to something nice?

The collection is available now till mid-April, so if you want some super powered makeup of your own, get it before it's gone.

53rd Annual Grammy Awards

More Martina, less Christina. Seriously, after the National Anthem flub last week at the Super Bowl, I'm surprised they wanted her to participate in the Aretha Franklin tribute. Seriously girl, you have a nice voice when you're not ripping your vocal chords.

Love Jennifer Hudson's rendition of Respect. She stole that tribute.

Aretha, you're a class act. Love you! I'm glad she's doing better.

I guess Glee can't win every award. But "Hey, Soul Sister" is a good Train song even if it's not my cuppa. But why did they thank Howard Stern?

YES!!! BORN THIS WAY!!!

*after watching performance* Man, not as epic a performance as I was expecting of you Gaga. Love the plastic-looking skirts though. Song still rocks my socks too.

I don't get Justin Bieber and why there's so much obsession with him.

So happy that Gaga won best pop album.

Oh what happened to you Bob Dylan? I can almost hear a faint memory of what your voice used to sound like.

And just like that, I'm tired of typing my thoughts. LOL

Crunchyroll streams new Haruhi

Just found out that Crunchyroll is streamlining the second season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Currently all 14 episodes are available to watch for paid members, with four episodes released weekly for non-paid users.

If there are any friends of mine who can't wait for the releases, I do have some 24 hour passes for all access to Crunchyroll.

I was Born This Way

After much anticipation, Lady Gaga has released her newest single today, entitled "Born This Way," which was released earlier than originally planned. While listening to it, I'm reminded of an early Madonna during the age of hits like "Express Yourself" or "Vogue." Seems like I'm not alone here.

With the catchy lyrics invoking empowerment, (and heck, just an infectious beat) has Lady Gaga done it again? Take a listen for yourself.

<lj-embed id="26" />

The "Born This Way" single is currently available on iTunes with the album of the same name coming out in May. For those who can't wait for the album, or even the music video, Lady Gaga will perform "Born This Way" at the 53rd annual Grammy awards this Sunday. Who's watching it with me? :D

Here comes Superman, from never-neverland

I've always dreamed of when I would be able to get into a superhero's tights. Both figuratively and... *ahem*

Anywho, it came to my attention some time ago that there finally exists a MMORPG I really want to play. Not your Wows or your Flyffs; no, I'm talking bout DC Universe Online. Imagine: Living the life of a DC superhero, getting a nice entry-level job at Wayne Enterprises, putting on a costume and smacking bad guys at night, to come home and read the late edition of The Daily Planet. Maybe even getting a date with The Flash. Hee.

Just look at those character designs. Makes me want to be Batman.

You play as a hero or villain that you create and customize, and every player gets an iconic DC character (like Superman, Batman, Lex Luthor, or the Joker) who sends you on assignments and group missions. Your mentor can be a hero or villain, which also decides how you'll develop in the game. Also alternate gaming options let groups of players square off against each other, and there’s even the ability to throw down as your favorite DC character. You can bet that I'll be playing as Poison Ivy a lot.

Speaking of Ivy, here's an Ivy cut scene from DC Universe Online.

<lj-embed id="27" />

And just for my dear animefall. Because you can't have Red without her Harl.

<lj-embed id="28" />

I love it when they use the original voice actors for certain characters. I can't imagine anyone else doing Harley's voice. But that doesn't mean I'm opposed to James Marsters voicing Lex Luthor. He sounds very delightful in the cinematic commercial for the game. ♥

Now to start saving my money.

I'm trying out my new year's resolution and hoping it sticks after the pitiful blog output I had the last couple of years. This year, I'm going to just do it. Not to rip off Nike, but far too often I come up with ideas of stuff I want to do, but never accomplish them. Not this year.

As such, I want to reconnect with my LJ friends (by posting more, commenting more, etc.)! Even though I've basically moved to Facebook and Twitter, I miss posting inane fandom crap with sprinkles of real life to LJ on a daily basis. I'm not sure how well I'd do at blogging everyday due to my law class, but I can update at least once a week. It used to be daily back in high school and my early years of college. Aaahh in November I will have had this LJ for nine years. That's mind-boggling.

On that nostalgic note, last year ended pretty well. Finished a whole year of grad school, and I went to London for the third time with faeriecross in tow, and I got to do overseas correspondence by covering a lecture at the House of Lords. I was also involved in an award-winning original play as the makeup designer, and was a founder of a social media site for my university. The greatest accomplishment of all was being promoted at work as the A&E editor, which has been a goal of mine ever since I started working at the paper. This year I'm planning on some more trips and adventures, life permitting. It's amazing in a few months I'll be entering the last year of my 20s. omgwtf!

My hair color is awesome and it was a total accident. ...just had to throw that in there.

Other than that, I've been starting some new fannish creations. I want to give Shrine Maiden a new look, write some fic, make some icons and remodel my personal Web site.

Tell me what's up with you my flist! :D

Damn, just watched Gundam 00 s2 episode 20. I knew Anew was going to die and I've never really liked her as a character (*inb4 Feldtfag) but her death scene appealed to me way too much. Fucking sparkles and "trust you" playing in a cappella (which I would love to have an entire version of). Damn the pretty ruining my Gundam!!! D:

Much Ado About Nothing

Wow, I am really a huge procrastinator. Looking back, most of my entries are either memes, links or brief entries that say I promise to actually update my LJ and I don't until I make another similar "I promise to update" post.

Well, I haven't been updating anything because I simply allowed myself to get out of the habit of daily blogging. I apologize for the long-unexpected hiatus, I honestly didn't see it coming myself. I started trickling away from LJ as far back as 2005, but it really hit in 2007 when I started becoming more active with on campus activities.

I got back into theatre around this time after I realized I had missed it so much after I graduated high school. I also quit my job at Chick-fil-A at the same time and then got a job at the campus paper writing mostly arts and entertainment articles and feature stories (I recently won the award for best A&E writer at SLU and three of my articles were sent off to the Best of South competition at the Southeastern Journalism Conference).

Other than that, I graduated college (first in my family to boot) and traveled to Europe last summer. I'll be starting grad school this year and in the summer I'll be returning to London, England to study international media. Everything's coming up Tara. :D

I'll get into the particulars of these events at a later time since I want to make a list of what I want to document since a lot of stuff has happened over the past few years and I really don't want to forget any of it. I swear, blogging is just like re-learning how to ride a bike or something. But I figure, if I want to be a great journalist I might as well do my daily writing.

So in case it's not that obvious, I decided to restart updating my LJ more frequently from now on! I'm dead serious this time too! 8D;; And yes I'll be commenting on my flist too after I do some major cleaning up of the communities I belong to as well as cleaning up the flist itself. I really don't care to have a huge flist anymore since it only added to my blogging hiatus.

If people constantly complain about people not commenting on their entries then I feel less inclined to comment at all. I would always read entries but I would sometimes just never feel like commenting since someone said what I had to say already or I had nothing to add to the conversation.

Another thing I'm also going to stop doing is commenting on friend memes. I never really connect to people that way. It's kinda like we just allow people access to lurk into our LJs without really getting to know them. That's not how I did it with the people whom I'm really close to on LJ. We met via similar comms, forums, or roleplaying games where we would chat ooc. Hell, I first met my roommates in a Slayers community. I just want to go back to getting to know people better before instantly adding them. :/

Btw, I also decided to make my journal open once more but I will still lock certain entries that pertain to stuff I don't want to broadcast over the entire internet.

So, about what's been preoccupying my time recently...

Much of the time I devote to watching anime these days is spent over my new fangirl obsession: Gundam 00. I've always been an on-again/off-again mecha fan. Escaflowne has always been my favorite mech series, along with Code Geass right up there. I just don't know what it is about mecha series with the crap second seasons they seem to produce *eyes Code Geass R2 for example.* I can't help myself when it comes to watching them. There are days where I feel Gundam 00 is getting the same treatment Sunrise gave to Code Geass R2 and I bitch and whine.

To explain the plot, Earth has been divided up by several different factions and war and terrorism are still on-going problems. Enter, Celestial Being, an organization that employs Gundams to intercept conflicts until everyone stops killing each other and bring peace to the world. So basically they become just like the terrorists they vow to abolish.

The first season really grabbed my attention after the first two episodes. I didn't watch it when it was first broadcast in Japan, but I downloaded an episode or two one night and decided to then marathon that shit through the night.

The second season is currently still airing (tonight episode 19 premieres) but I'm not sure how I feel about it. I think I spend too much time on 4chan in the /m/ section where literally everyone bitches about the pairings. I know, I know there isn't a fandom that doesn't bitch when it comes to shippings but this is /m/ where all the /m/en are supposed to be!!! They whine more than most girls.

I'm currently working on a Gundam 00 layout theme for LJ to give my new writing resolve an added boost and I've been contemplating the idea of making a character shrine for my favorite character Tieria Erde (his name is Earth Earth, how awesome is that?).

I love all of the Gundam meisters for various reasons, but when it comes to character development, Tieria has the best of all four of the boys. Personality-wise I would say I'm more of a Lockon, since I do tend to love Haros. As far ships go, I support Setsuna/Gundam all the way. *snark*

I'm so proud of myself for typing up something that wasn't less than 100 words. Now to wait for my weekly dose of Gundam.

Blog for New Orleans Theater Day

I have no idea where I would be without theatre, and that includes New Orleans theatre. Every time I perform in a show, I become part of a family with my fellow cast members. Some of my best memories are from our rehearsals, to the performances, and especially the cast parties. Anything wild and crazy can happen with theatre folk and it usually does. It's some of the best experiences of my life and a wonderful artistic outlet for those who do not know how to paint or draw. In theatre your body is your tool and canvas all in one. Sometimes the work is frustrating, the pay just as much, but when it all comes together and I hear the roar of the audience applauding you, I want for nothing more in my life.

2008: The Year in Review

Since I've been dead for like... 2 years+ on LJ, I figured the best way to let people know I was alive and kicking was to post a meme about my year in review. So here it is!

1.What did you do in 2008 that you'd never done before? Became a certified critic, went to Europe, worked on a student film, graduated college, moved away from home, voted for a winning president.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I never keep my resolutions.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth? My Deshikins' brother had a baby girl named Amelia.

4. Did anyone close to you die? No, but a lot of my favorite actors/celebrities did. R.I.P. Bettie Page.

5. What countries did you visit? Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, France and England.

6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008? More money, part of a master's degree, an internship, a satisfying relationship.

7. What date from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? December 13th. Two years ago, it was the day of my greatest failure and this year it's the day of my greatest accomplishment.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? Graduating, becoming a critic, being voted for best A&E journalist at Southeastern.

9. What was your biggest failure? Procrastinating too long on projects.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury? No, but I did suffer emotionally from the stress my last semester had given me.

11. What was the best thing you bought? My iPhone. I love that damn thing.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration? My friends who always support me.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? A certain woman who made my last relationship hellish to say the least.

14. Where did most of your money go? Rent, gas and my other bills.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? Traveling outside the country and finishing school.

16. What song will always remind you of 2008? "Lucky Star" by Madonna.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? I feel I have more experience and that makes me happier.
ii. thinner or fatter? Same ol' cuddle bear.
iii. richer or poorer? I really lack in the green these days.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of? I could have done better with Philosophy, done more writing, had been a president APO deserved, re-connected with old friends.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of? Procrastination. It is the one vice of mine I really hate.

20. How will you be spending Christmas? I celebrated with my friends at my apartment on the 23rd, then spent it with my family on the 24th and 25th.

22. Did you fall in love in 2008? I thought I was close to it, but I realized it was more of me wanting it to be real than it actually being real.

23. How many one-night stands? None. I'm a classy gal.

24. What was your favorite TV program? House, Law and Order: SVU, Scrubs, Avatar.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? Yes.

26. What was the best book you read? A lot of my reading dealt with school this year but I enjoyed reading about Nietzsche.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery? Mother's Anthem.

30. What was your favorite film of this year? Hands down The Dark Knight.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I was working on a student film during the day and then I went swimming with my roomies. I was 26.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? Financial stability.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008? 80's Meets the Mafia.

34. What kept you sane? Movies, coffee, good friends.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? None this year.

36. What political issue stirred you the most? The election. Pretty much made history.

37. Who did you miss? Friends who've moved away this semester and friends whom I rarely get to talk to.

38. Who was the best new person you met? Aeriel's brother Rande is cool.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008: The computer age will be the death of us all.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
You load sixteen tons, and what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt.
Saint Peter, don't you call me, 'cause I can't go;
I owe my soul to the company store...
