Yhdessä Rojavan puolesta collective is bringing activist, feminist and PhD candidate, Dilar Dirik, to Helsinki. Dirik will speak on the recently declared Federation of Rojava and its relation to Democratic Confederalism and a stateless democracy. Dirik will also draw from personal experience in the area. The seminar will be opened by investigative journalist Bruno Jäntti. Jäntti will give a presentation on Western foreign policy in the Middle East, particularly in relation to democratic deficit characteristic of most states in the region.
Over the last year Turkey has heightened its oppression of the Kurdish people, the war in Syria continues, and ISIS, although weakened, is still a real enemy of the peoples of Rojava. Meanwhile the project of Democratic Confederalism has spread beyond Rojava and gained support in Bakur.
Last spring the Yhdessä Rojavan puolesta collective organized a talk with Kurdish journalist and activist Havin Guneser. During that lecture, Guneser spoke about the Revolution in Rojava, laying the foundations for our understanding of what embodies the progressive Kurdish-led resistance to neighbouring authoritarian leaders and groups such Bashar Al-Assad, Recep Erdogan, and ISIS. This year we will discuss questions such as how does Democratic Confederalism work in practice, what’s the role of women in struggles for autonomy, especially considering the heated political atmosphere surrounding Rojava?
You are warmly welcome to listen and discuss the above topics! Coffee, tea and snacks are served for donations, please bring cash.
The event is organized in cooperation with the Autonomous Students (Autop).
