Possible spoilers, I guess, so scene 2 is under the cut.

I know that we probably won't get it, but I really want a scene involving everyone and either saying goodbye to or talking to Jackson about the fact that he's leaving. I don't want the show to literally just have someone be like, "Yeah, he moved" and just be done with it. He's an important character and his storyline was just finally moving forward, so I would love to see all of the kids talk about him or something of the sort. Especially Lydia, considering that the last season ended with them basically being together again, and she was so devastated over him, only to find out he was alive and he was okay in the end. AND DANNY, TOO. I need something involving Danny and letting him know that a) Jackson isn't actually dead and b) he's left for whatever reason. I just don't want a simple reason that he's gone and then everyone basically forgets about him :(

Title: The One That Got Away
Pairing/Characters: Puck/Rachel. There's an OC with a brief appearance.
Rating/Warnings: PG-13.
Word Count: 1051
Summary/Prompt: Future!fic, based on Katy Perry's "The One That Got Away." Puck sees Rachel again in a bar in New York.
A/N: As always, unbeta'd. I wrote this in basically 15 minutes flat with no breaks, so I'm sorry if it sucks. I got the prompt and was immediately hit with an idea and I had to write it. Typos are expected.

Of all the people Noah Puckerman expected to see that night at the bar, she was probably at the bottom of the list. It was karaoke night, after all, so he should have maybe thought about how she could outshine all of the drunk girls that were just embarrassing themselves, but she didn't even cross his mind once. Now he just feels stupid.

He's sitting on a stool at the bar located in the middle of New York City. The last time he saw her was high school. The last time he'd heard from her had been about a week after graduation, when she invited everyone that used to be in glee club to a party at her home. He'd never RSVPed, and he didn't show up. So when she walks on to the small stage that's brightly lit, he feels like he's seeing a ghost.

It was just like her to actually move to New York. She always talked about how "New York was her one true love" and how she'd "be on broadway someday, just wait and see." It wasn't that he didn't believe her, because he knew that she had the willpower to make it happen. It was just the last thing on his mind when he moved out of Ohio. He wanted to live in a big city, far from home, so he chose New York. Rachel Berry never even entered his mind when he arrived in the Big Apple. Not once.

And leave it to Rachel Berry to sing something from broadway on a stage in a bar. Of course, she's a little tipsy, but he figures she'd be doing this even if she was 100% sober. And of course, she puts everyone else in the bar to shame with her voice that is still, after all of these years, absolutely flawless.

While she's singing, he sits quitely at the dark bar, hoping she won't look up and see him. He wants to remain invisible to her. He doesn't need to get those butterflies in his stomach like he used to whenever they'd talk. He just wants to go about his drinking and not have Ms. Berry try to start a conversation about how she misses him and how she wishes he'd come to her little social gathering. He doesn't want to deal with any of that bullshit. He just wants to pout and take a few shots while he listens to the girl of his dreams sing about gravity or something.

He thinks about maybe chasing her down once she's done singing and walking off of the stage, but he quickly dismisses it as he sees the ring on her left ring finger shining under the spotlight. Of course she's married. Or engaged, at least. Of course, he can't ever be happy, just because he was too scared to actually try and get the only thing that had ever really mattered to him.

So before she even finishes the song about flying or whatever it is, he pays the bartender, and sneaks out. He just stands outside in the cold December air, leaning against the building. It's so cold that he can see the air leaving his mouth every time he exhales. He just needs to take a few deep breaths, and then walk home. It's not like his apartment was far from the bar.

He definitely didn't expect Rachel to exit the bar, and stand outside the door, cheeks bright red. She's obviously embarrassed, but she really shouldn't be. Her voice and performance in the stupid little bar were amazing. But he's much more worried about her seeing him than that. He knows that if he tries to walk away, she'll hear him and see his mohawk and chase him down. But he's almost in a worse position if he tries to stay, because all it takes is her turning around to go back inside and boom. Eye contact will be made.

He decides to just stay in his spot, and remain as still as possible. When he hears the door to the bar open again and he sees a tall, dark-haired man come out and walk towards Rachel, he almost growls.

The man walks around and stands in front of her, before putting his hands on her shoulders. He leans forward, whispers something to her, and then she's on her tippy-toes, leaning in to kiss him. Something inside of Puck breaks. He turns as quietly as he can and walks down the street, knowing that she's probably going to see him now, but he's determined to keep walking and not stop, even if she does shout his name. He just tries to get away from it all.

Rachel pulls back from kissing her fiance, Nick, and just looks up at him and smiles. He'd just come outside in the chilly air to assure her that her singing was as perfect as always, which she surprisingly didn't believe. She's about to lean back in to kiss him again when she hears footsteps getting farther and farther away. She turns to see a familiar mohawk speed-walking away, catching the attention of her husband. He makes some sly comment about his jacket and his boots, and she's tempted to shoot something back, but she doesn't. She's also tempted to call him back over, and maybe talk to him for a bit. It's no secret that she missed him. But she doesn't say anything, because she knows it's far too late for that.

In another life, they could be walking together down the sidewalk, instead of him walking alone. They could share an apartment and come down to the bar together, and sing duets together in front of a crowd of drunk New-Yorkers.

But she isn't living that life. She's living one where she's engaged to the incredibly charming guy that was in her communications class. She's living a life where she's happy, of course she's happy, but she could be happier. And she can't help but think it's because she's with the man next to her, and not the one she can still faintly see in the distance. But she knows that to him, she'll always just be the one that got away, and as much as she hates it, she knows that it's the truth.

How is it that once again, Mr. Schuester was giving the sectionals solo to someone other than her? Every time she had sung a solo, they'd won. So why would he give the solo to Quinn?! She was almost nauseous just thinking about it. What if they lost, just because she didn't have a solo? Her head was even faster now. This couldn't happen. They couldn't have a repeat of Nationals. She had to do something, and fast. Maybe it was time that Rachel took a page from Santana's book, and learned a little about what she did best...revenge.

Rachel loved spring. After living in a snowy wonderland for three months, she loved to go outside and watch as the snow would slowly melt and run down the sidewalk. Seeing flowers blossoming and feeling the warm heat on her face after such a long period of the cold was the most amazing feeling in the world. And her favorite part about spring? Singing with her best friends - no, her family - at Nationals. And although they didn't win last year, and they sometimes argued, and, well, not everyone appreciated her musical talent, she couldn't imagine a better way to celebrate the spring.

In her perfect reality, Santana would have ended up with a girlfriend after spilling her guts to Brittany, instead of a broken heart. She would have won prom queen, and danced with her favorite girl in the entire world, in front of everyone, without shame. She would sing and dance on stage with her. She would kiss her whenever she wanted to, just because she could. She would just be with her, always, because that would just be enough. She wouldn't have to worry about anyone judging her because she'd be happy, and that would be the only thing that mattered. They could buy an apartment and live together in the city, and maybe someday, they could get married, because they both would want it more than anything else in the world. And then Brittany would be hers, officially. And they'd be in love with each other and everything would be perfect and they'd be together forever.

But Santana doesn't live in her perfect reality. She lives in a world where the girl she's in love with won't break up with her boyfriend for her. Where she has to deny the way she feels because she doesn't want to be made fun of. Where she dates someone she isn't in love with, at all, just as a cover up. Where her date wins prom king, and a boy wins prom queen instead of her. Where she's too scared to sing and dance on stage with the girl she's in love with. Where she can't even admit to her best friends - scratch that, her family - that she actually likes girls, and always has.

For once, Santana wishes that her expectations would match her perfect reality. In her dreams, she lives in that world, where Brittany is hers. But every time she wakes up, her heart breaks a little more, knowing that she doesn't live that life. But she puts on a strong face, and goes to school every day anyways, and just admires her from afar. And she tries not to break down, because seeing her dream girl being happy with someone else is the most painful thing she's ever encountered.

Rachel and Finn lay on their king-sized bed in silence. Rachel's head rested on Finn's chest, as he brushed his fingers through her long, dark hair. They had been in the same spot for the last two hours, each of them dozing off a few times, but eventually waking up and just cuddling more than they had been before. And every time one of them would try to talk, the other would stop them with a kiss, or they would just trail off and never finish what they had started to say, and then they would return to the silent state they had been in before.

The silence wasn't an awkward one. It was the kind of silence that says so much, without saying anything at all. They didn't need words anymore, because they both knew exactly how the other felt, and that was all that mattered. They had each other, and always would.

SUMMARY
It's that time of the season again! In episode 9 of season two, entitled "Special Education," New Directions is off to compete at Sectionals once again. This time around, Will gives the solos in the duet to Sam and Quinn, leaving him with a very annoyed Rachel. Meanwhile, Kurt is attending school at Dalton Academy, and is a member of the Warblers with Blaine. Kurt and Rachel sing "Don't Cry For Me Argentina." Because Kurt doesn't go to McKinley, New Directions is lacking a 12th member, who is eventually recruited by Puck - Lauren Zizes.

New Directions is competing against the Dalton Academy Warblers and the Hipsters this year. The Hipsters perform "The Living Years," while the Warblers perform an acapella version of "Hey, Soul Sister," led by Blaine. New Directions performs "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" with Sam and Quinn on lead, as well as "Valerie," sung by Santana, featuring Brittany and Mike dancing. In the end, New Directions and the Warblers tie, meaning they will both go on to compete at Regionals.

After arriving back at school, Will finds out that Emma and Carl, her boyfriend, got married in Vegas. Rachel tells Finn that while they had been fighting earlier in the episode (after Finn admits that he slept with Santana), she attempted to fool around with Puck, who stopped before anything significant occured. Finn is infuriated, and he breaks up with her. The episode ends with Tina and Mercedes leading New Directions in a performance of "Dogs Days Are Over."

"Special Education" was directed by Paris Barclay and aired on
November 30, 2010.

SCENES
Picking a favorite scene from this episode is quite easy for me. It is definitely New Direction's performance at Sectionals. I adore watching these kids perform, and I really liked that the soloists were Sam, Quinn, and Santana. I cannot even begin to tell you how many times I've watched/listened to these songs. This performance is my favorite competition performance the kids have done so far.

Picking a least favorite scene is surprisingly hard. I'm going to have to go with the scene where Finn and Rachel break up. I'm a huge fan of Rachel, as most of you probably know, so seeing her unhappy is something I never enjoy. And despite how much I dislike Finn and Rachel as a couple, she was happy with him, and I'm all for whatever makes Rachel happy.

PERFORMANCES
My favorite performance in this episode is definitely "Dog Days Are Over." I always love numbers that really show the club interacting like a family, and this is no exception. Despite everything that they've gone through and all of the difficult times they've had, they put them all in the past, and just look like they're having an amazing time. I absolutely love that Tina and Mercedes are the leads for this song, too. It really fits both of their voices well, and I'm all for giving solos to each and every character, instead of just a select few.

My least favorite performance in this episode would have to be the Hipster's performance of "The Living Years." I hadn't heard this song before the episode, which is part of the reason I disliked it. We also don't know anything about these characters, so it really doesn't give it much likability. Plus, I love every other performance so much, that I couldn't pick anything else as a least favorite.

REVIEW

Overall, I have to give this episode 4/5 stars. I really enjoyed it, and it still remains as one of my favorite season two episodes. It reminds me of the very first 13 episodes, which were, in my opinion, the best 13 of the entire show. I loved the Rachel/Kurt friendship development, as well as the amazing performances throughout the entire episode. It's definitely one I will watch over and over again.
