How to Manage Nursing Care at Home

4.3 out of 5 stars (4)

According to AARP (2015), 16.6%, one out of every six, of Americans provide unpaid care to an adult. In many cases, this care goes beyond custodial care and qualifies as skilled nursing care. Imagine this: someone you care deeply about is being released from the hospital, given the alternatives of home care, hospice care, or a nursing home. You have to decide, or help them decide, which alternative is best. If you decide on home care, you may need to manage it. This book will help you understand how to provide skilled nursing care at home and will aid in your decision-making on whether to undertake this. This book answers your primary questions: Why choose home care rather than care at a nursing facility? What will you need? Whom will you hire? When will they have to do what? Where in your home will they do it? How will you manage the care? The authors make it easier for those who step forward to provide care in their home for a family member or friend, although not being trained medical professionals themselves. You can manage something without being an expert, but it does require a working knowledge of the major concepts and the implementation of some variety of systematization. Whether you are managing the care at home or just monitoring care being given at home by an agency, this book should be of assistance to you in understanding what is needed and what is being done. The co-authors have been involved for over a decade in supplying and managing skilled nursing care at home for an immune-compromised quadriplegic patient who is on a ventilator and is fed and medicated through a gastric tube. The round-the-clock care mimics that which she received in the critical care unit of her regional hospital. How to Manage Nursing Care at Home tells its readers what to expect and gives them the necessary information and structure, in terms of needed forms, “charts,” to understand and oversee the nursing care given by RNs and LPNs. As one expert notes: “…authors Douglas Winslow Cooper and Diane R. Beggin address one of the most complex global issues faced in the 21st century: caring for someone you love, one who is also diagnosed with a severe medical condition, doing this safely, and in the home…. a valuable guide that will ease your worry as you begin your journey as one of the millions of untrained family caregivers who want to safely provide complex medical care services so that your loved one can remain home.” (Eboni I. Green, PhD, RN, Co-Founder of Caregiver Support Services)

Douglas Winslow Cooper (1942- ) is a freelance writer, a retired physicist, a caregiver, and a rational optimist. From his early years in the shadow of New York City's George Washington Bridge to his early retirement by sunny Lake Osiris in Walden, NY, to help care for his beloved bedridden wife, Tina Su Cooper, he has found that indeed "the world is a tragedy to those who feel and a comedy to those who think," agreeing with Horace Walpole.

On June 2, 1984, after twenty years apart, former college sweethearts Tina Su (born Su Ting-ting) and Doug Cooper married. Their wedding rings are inscribed, "A dream come true." After more than 25 years of being married, they still feel that way, their motto being: "Together forever." The Coopers' marriage has been filled with joy, laughter, and occasional sorrow, due to her increasing disability from multiple sclerosis. Their glasses may be half-full now, but what remains is precious.

Dr.Cooper's first book was his 1974 Ph.D. dissertation for Harvard University. A dozen printed copies more than filled the public demand. Tina and Doug hope to reach a wider audience with TING AND I to share some lessons learned about life, love, loyalty. They invite you to write them at douglas@tingandi.com.

A three-minute interview done in October 2011 by donovanmediastrategies.com is available at tinyurl.com/4yag4oc .

After publishing TING AND I, Dr. Cooper established a business helping others to write and publish their books, writeyourbookwithme.com. He co-authored AVA GARDNER'S DAUGHTER, which was withdrawn when his co-author's claims were refuted; THE SHIELD OF GOLD, a candid memoir by a former NYPD detective; KIDNAPPED TWICE, the memoir of a woman betrayed and abused as a child. He coached and edited the memoirs HIGH SHOES AND BLOOMERS and BUT...AT WHAT COST. Subsequently, Dr. Cooper co-authored with Adria Goldman Gross SOLVED! CURING YOUR MEDICAL INSURANCE PROBLEMS and MULTI-PAYER MEDICINE NIGHTMARE MADE IN THE USA, the International Edition of SOLVED! He coached Kathleen Blake Shields and edited her HOME IS WHERE THE STORY BEGINS.

Most recently, Dr. Cooper published WRITE YOUR BOOK WITH ME, to help would-be authors succeed in planning, preparing, publishing, and promoting their books.

When they grow old, partners and/or parents don’t always end up being moved into a long-term care / nursing home. They may spend some time in a hospital after being admitted with some health ailment, be diagnosed with a severe and/or chronic medical condition, and then be released to return home. This often leaves a family member becoming a caregiver – thereby providing help and support, where and when needed. While being certainly concerned for a senior’s health and well-being, a family caregiver may lack the necessary experience or even the know-how to provide the best care in this specific situation.

In their book, How to Manage Nursing Care at Home, authors Douglas Winslow Cooper and Diane R. Beggin address this group and detail what to expect and how to best help. I appreciated that this book is based on the personal care provided by Cooper to both his wife and his mother (Beggin was his head nurse at the time). Cooper and Beggin have packed their book chock-full of useful information – it is complete, comprehensive, and well thought-out.

Readers of How to Manage Nursing Care at Home will also find a detailed list of recommended equipment and supplies to make their jobs easier, an explanation of human body functions (to help them better understand what their loved one is going through), care considerations for different conditions, advice on hiring qualified nursing help, and sample paperwork you can use to oversee that nursing help (instead of the other way around).

As our country’s population continues to age, information for prospective, new, and current caregivers will become king. The information shared in How to Manage Nursing Care at Home can prove to be and will prove to be a valuable read for anybody stepping into the role of a family caregiver or already serving as one for a loved one with a chronic health condition not living in a long-term care home.

I've been a caregiver in several capacities over the last 20 years, first for my wife, who died of cancer in her 30s, then my father, grandmother, and now my mother. I take these care giving years, not as a distraction from my life priorities, but as central to my life purposes, which include helping those in need, especially those closest to me. Dr. Cooper is my hero in this respect. We've corresponded about our care giving in recent years, and I can testify that he's the real deal. He cares, and has put tons of research into how to care for his dear wife, who's now totally incapacitated.

His herculean efforts to provide the best possible quality life for both his wife and mother, even as they lost all mobility and the ability to communicate, provide both inspiration and a wealth of information for America’s millions of care takers. One of my main challenges has been getting accurate and specific information about home care. This book should help many, particularly those who are in the intense mode of caring for a loved one who has many physical needs.
