My first foray into the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema, Emilio Fernández's iconic film is a mash up of melodrama, rumba dance sequences, and film noir that explores of the life of a rumbera named Violeta with a heart of gold who decides to take care of an abandoned child fathered by a misogynistic gangster with one of Violeta's fellow dancers.
