The Chelmsford High baseball team’s run from No. 14 seed to Division 1 state champions is just as impressive some two months later.
The Lions rattled off wins over talented programs and made big plays in clutch moments. And on Monday night, their memorable postseason run landed them on the warning track at Fenway Park.
Before the Boston Red Sox battled the Kansas City Royals, Chelmsford took part in an on-field ceremony with other state champions around the state. Players and coaches took to the warning track and posed for a photo in front of the iconic Green Monster.
Chelmsford’s 8-2 win over No. 8 Braintree at Polar Park in Worcester was the final leg in a run for the ages that yielded the team’s first state title in the MIAA era. The Lions won games over No. 19 Shrewsbury (1-0), No. 3 Bishop Feehan (12-3), No. 11 Wellesley (1-0) and No. 2 Saint John’s (5-3) en route to the finals.
Griffin Green signed by Reds
While the Lions were patrolling America’s most beloved ballpark, a former Chelmsford standout was getting familiarized with his new threads. Griffin Green, a 2019 CHS graduate, recently signed a Major League Baseball contract with the Cincinnati Reds after a successful showing in the MLB Draft League.
Green pitched collegiately at Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. In his junior season at Virginia Tech, Green suffered a UCL injury that required Tommy John surgery. After a long recovery process, Green returned to the mound as a member of Wake Forest. Last season, Green pitched 37.1 innings across 26 games, recording a 2.65 ERA.
He was then offered an invitation to the MLB Draft League, where he put up eye-popping numbers for the Frederick Keys. In seven appearances, he notched 11 strikeouts and allowed only two earned runs. His younger brother, Garrett, is a member of the Chelmsford High baseball squad.
