there is a warm seduction that rohmer always brings to his films. and rather than it being this dangerously sexy thing, it is a rather slow, enchanting, and deeply humanistic desire that i feel makes his films so relatable and comforting. i felt so deeply taken by the emotions and scenery.
it never feels to long with him either, it is strange; i could watch so many of these and each of them would be its own little masterpiece deserving of preservation.

A meditative experience. It’s genuinely a wonder how Soo is so capable of not only writing such a strong script as this but being able enough as a director to really portray the casual nature of conversations and people. I mean really imagine moving to that mystical and almost ethereal town of folks hidden in the pacific north west. a child of divorce who feels completely unseen is  saved from death in that intense moment. and what really gets me is when they are in her room together, she just throws all her trust away to him. she knows he thirsts, in any moment she can be gone like that; they go so slow, all of the teenage awkwardness and confusion is transformed into an otherworldly desire. the seduction and very idea of it is so palpable.

you can make the very obvious observations on what makes this film special, whether that be its production design, the way it was shot, or even the performances, but what really stuck with me was the pain. The pain of discovery, the pain of trust, the pain of being truly seen, the pain of being alive. ideally you get to coddle and love those through these things we all inevitably come to but not for him. no, and his exemption…
