Fully cellulose-based films and coatings to replace fossil-based packaging 📦🌿 🤝 Together with LUT University and 34 industrial partners in the F3 project, we have developed transparent, high-performance films and coatings that match the functionality of plastics, while supporting industrial scalability and enabling simplified recycling or biodegradation. 💬 “Plastic films are one of the most widely used packaging formats, yet they are among the most difficult to recycle and a major source of persistent environmental pollution. Cellulose materials open new sustainable solutions for packaging,” says VTT's Ali Harlin. 💡 Looking ahead, the material platform could enable more than replacing plastics. It has potential for multifunctional applications, including barrier coatings, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, as well as packaging that can respond to changes in humidity, gas composition or pH. Technology for removing CO₂ from seawater reaches a new stage 🌊 🤝 Together with Mitsubishi Electric, we have advanced Direct Ocean Capture (DOC) technology from early-stage development towards pilot-scale validation. DOC removes dissolved inorganic carbon from seawater, supporting the ocean's natural role in absorbing atmospheric CO₂. ♻️ DOC can complement emissions reductions, especially in sectors where residual emissions cannot be fully eliminated. Combined with low-carbon electricity and existing coastal infrastructure, it could support large-scale carbon removal. 💬 “This is exactly the type of long-term, high-impact challenge that can translate research into real-world breakthroughs,” says VTT's Antti Arasto. How can forest industry companies turn future signals into new sources of growth? Together with Metsä Group, we carried out two parallel foresight projects to build a structured long-term view of digital and process technologies shaping the forest industry. The collaboration helped Metsä Group: 🌲 Create comprehensive Future Radar views on technologies relevant to competitiveness and sustainability 🌲 Ideate 14 new business visions linked to enabling capabilities and technologies 🌲 Strengthen cross-business collaboration and the ability to translate future signals into business opportunities “The collaboration with VTT worked extremely well. This way of working helped us think more broadly than usual and challenge and complement our own perspectives, which is the key to renewal,” say Jussi Hyvärinen, Project Manager, IT and Tero Tervahartiala, R&D Manager, Group R&D, at Metsä Group.
